I would almost argue going the other way than sanding, i'd think they'd look great textured. Maybe something for a HQ model or Command Squad. LTP Posted December 23, 2008 Author Share Posted December 23, 2008 Hi larundel: I used the link here on the b & c but used some different bits for my quad so you can customise it as you go and it can be a real pain in the ass but just keep at it. blood&chocolate: yes i did drill the holes in his weapon. I used the citadel hobby drill. It s pretty good for what it cost however if you get one be sure to have plenty of spare drill bits especially if drilling metal models. I took ages on the last guy, like i said i dont play so i enjoy taking my time painting and im always looking to improve. cheers for the comment guys. In my very first post on this topic i said i was crap at writing fluff you are about to see just how crap i am lol. I had a bit of a brain wave the other day and started to jot things down. The good thing is once you ve read the fluff you can look at something alot more interesting... my half finished dread. So here it goes.. It was 8 months ago that they got the call, an SOS from a colony a few lightyears away begging the Lightning Hawks to come and save them. Tyranids had swarmed the planet destroying everything they could find. The transmission from the guard station had been cut short, no one knew exactly why but everyone could more or less guess that it had something to do with the bugs. The Lightning Hawks had no other option but the help the nearby planet. They recieved recruits from many colonies near thier homeworld and if they did not protect the people then no one would be there to fill the chapters ranks. Half of the chapters finest battle brothers were sent to rid the planet of the tyranid scum and with great success too. In only 8 months of hard battles and untold braverys the Lightning hawks rid the planet of the hive enough for the tyranids to retreat. Now on their return home the marines were full of moral and still chatting and laughing hysterically about how Brother Angelus had tripped over the tiniest boulder during an assault that had sent him flying, however, he didnt find it so funny. :lol: . As they neared their homeworld the marines had a feeling that something just wasn't right. The group of marines stopped taking the p*ss out of Brother Angelus and looked out of a nearby window to find a very big, very nasty looking tyranid hive ship orbiting over thier homeworld. Not best pleased with the scenery the marines took it upon themselves before the order even came to get to thier drop pods and await release. As soon as the fleet was close enough they were released and every one of the marines were hoping that the pub had not been destroyed. The first pod landed and the hatches opened, the first thing brother angelus saw was half of the citys temple (the half that was left standing) the bad thing was, that was also the last thing he saw. Brother marine Casius saw exactly what killed Brother Angelus. You couldn't really miss a 30ft carnifex spewing acid all over the place to be honest. From what he could see the homeworld was not in the best of ways. The tiled floors that were common around all the cities on the homeworld, were in pieces with crators and blood everywhere. The good thing was the blood was green so with his best guess Casius came to the conclusion that the home boys (as the marines who got sent away called the guys who stayed) had been doing a rather good job. Sgt Hazel's tactical squad had been hiding around the side of a building ready to blow up the canifex, or try too, with a rocket launcher when the pods landed. He had been left to train a new set of tactical guys straight from scout school so he wasnt very happy when a mass invasion happened on his homeworld. "At last! Some help from the blokes who know what there doing. I hope they dont know about the pub yet :D To be continued......maybe?? Ok so now you have read through that garbage heres some pics of my dread. I had to refurbush it because it was painted blood angels colours. I also stuck some extra armour on it using plasticard and some plastic lightning bolts. Ive made my own banner to go with the dread and i think that it will finish it off nicely. Ive pretty much finished the main front of the body and now im going to start on the back. Its taken me about 3 hours so far lol. Here is some shots of the banner. This is how it started and how it has turned out. I used the plasticard as a base and then gs'd over it to made the banner more flowy. I havn't finished painting it yet and the silver marks you can see on it are pencil marks which will be gone when its finished. Next time smooth out the GS a little more ( I think I see some fingerprints), but the painting and the idea is great. Just thinking... before the GS fully dries get a high thread count piece of material and push it on the banner. It will cover up/unify the prints and make it look like cloth. Just a thought. First of all I quite enjoyed the start of your backstory. It has just the right mix of humor and attention to detail, like tying in the tiles you like to put on your bases. I do hope that the lack of comments doesn't stop you from continuing your fluff!! Secondly a few points on your dreadnaught. You've done a good job on the banner, the green stuff has turned out rather well and overall it looks pretty nice. The only thing i picked up is the gold frame on the banner looks too straight at the top as though it isn't affected by the folds in the cloth. Just a minor point though. The ligtning bolt on his right leg looks really good too, how did you do that? Over all i think you've done an excellent job - good painting, good green stuff, good ideas! I think perhaps you're right about your camera though as it is quite difficult to see the highlights. Keep up the good work - any idea what you'll be working on next? I used a base of tausept orchre foundation and then built the yellow up until it was light enough for me i then highlighted using golden yellow/ white mix and then final highlight of white to do the forks. Keep up the good work - any idea what you'll be working on next? Will do! dont really know what to do next. Im on a promotion course for the next 2 weeks with the Army so i wont have time to paint. I'll have a think about it whilst im away. It's been a while since I checked back in this thread, it sorta disappeared with the wave of new threads coming in every day. I would say good job on the Dready, excellent job on the bike bases, and the Apothecary is pretty good too. One thing about the Dread. Something that weighty would crush through the tiles. Something that weighty would crush through the tiles I may not of made it very obvious lol but my dread is crushing the tiles, i have placed pieces around the foot that is on the tiles. Next time i'll make it more obvious though. cheers for the comments everyone. It seems that my camera doesn't like purple because my pics are coming out looking blue. Heres another update.
