My (badly painted) Howling Griffons

Recommended Posts

HEllo everyone. after figuring out how to get pics up on here, I'm here to get some stuff done.

The next few pics are the beginning of my Howling Griffons. I have more models made, just getting based in black and white to see which works best, and mostly gunna let ya know whats coming right now: Devastators, Veteran Marines, and a Commander.

Just a little fluff before the pics, these guys pretty much just got done with the whole Badab War, some some of their armor is slightly chaotic.(a few tried to join the Tyrant) and its all i really had...being a mostly Chaos Player.

so here we go.

Also, holy crap thin your paints.

Perhaps a little harsh in the way it's said but it's also a very accurate piece of advice that will increase your abilities a huge amount once you get the knack of it.

Also, how are you undercoating? Black or white spray? Or black or white brushed on? Or are you not undercoating and that's why you have to lay it on thick?

well, im experimenting with the basecoating. Right now these guys are all black basecoated, and then the paints not very thick, its just that there are alot of layers with the yellow. I dont know whats up with the red. I have a few guys im wokring on right now that are white undercoated, and using Lamenter's god-send yellow tut. I also have some black undercoat with white brushed on guys im testing, just to see what works the best.

Oh and its all brushed on cuz i dont have spray. I live way out of the city that sells GW stuff, and mailing is not really an option, so i paint it on.

OK so HOWDY

First thing first, welcome to the board.

Next, slow down in your painting. painting is not a race and having your entire army done in a day gets you no spr\ecial award.

Howling griffons

I would suggest prime in white. The use mecharite red for you red and plain old Sunburst yellow for the yellow.

Thinning your paint, use anywhere from a 2:1 or 1:1 paint to water ratio. In other words, for every 2 drops of paint, use one drop of water or use 1 drop of paint to 1 drop of water.

Even with cruddy brushes, if you take your time and do not overlaod the brush with paint, you should be able to get tremendously improved results with some patience and practice.

Don't go all hating on yourself because they look horrid, we all have to start somewhere and none of us were very good with our first figures. I shudder when I think of my own from way back when.

Anyhoo, good luck, keep practicing, thin your paints and take your time.

Thanks for the advice! Yea, i dont normally paint like this... i dunno whats up. Not that my normal painting jobs are much better, but i dont use bright colors, so maybe thats it.

As for the thinning with yellow and Lamenter's yellow..i'll try that later tonight or tomorrow.

Which red are you using? It looks very shiny, almost as if the vet sarge has dipped his arm in a vat of blood.

Ok dokey, on to the helpfulness. I suggest you try washing the recesses and joints of the armour to differentiate them. A thin black wash over the white skulls etc will pick out the details and do a lot for them. You also have a few glaring mould lines, clean those off and the models will look better from the get-go. To get a straight line betwen the red & yellow try using a thin, long bristled brush (e.g. GW's fine detail brush). Use the whole length of the brush to do the stroke where possible and the line will be straight. Or maybe you could deviate from the colour scheme a little and put a black line between the two colours? It would neaten them up a treat!

Hope that helps. Keep it up and they could be a good looking army in time!
