HOWDY.

SO while I am on holiday vacation from work I have decided to begin work on some of my 2009 Golden Demon entries.

First up is a Space Shark.

I have nothing yet except a ton of bits and few ideas.

Currently I am considering a marine, either vet or sgt or some sort with a jump pack landing while firing his pistol, either plasma or bolt with a chainsword in the other hand.

I have one of the plastic assault marines in the running pose as a start, a left hand from the Templars sprue with iconography filed off, leaving only the chain to the chainsword. This will be raised slightly to the left, as if ready to slam down on some poor fool in the wrong place at the wrong time.

SO here is where I am getting stuck. For the pistol arm, I could do an extended arm with pistol out and firing, or I could have it a little more held back and put a combat shield up with the pistol behind.

The guy is going to landing or running, not sure which yet, each has good dynamic qualities. I am leaning a little more toward landing.

Helmetted or no helmet. I was thiking if no helmet, then a space wof head with the hari shave off and some thick braids for the hair would look really awesome, but with a helmet, it would get a fin on top and some very neat tooth work on the face mask portion. Both would be eye-catching I think.

Additionally I am going to add things like the Space Wolves have, ie necklaces and iconography doo dads to bring out a more feral feel.

So that is my thinking at the moment. I have spent part of the morning cleaning bits and filing off mold lines, so I should have some pictures this evening of the bits I am currently working with.

Any thoughts, opinions or ideas would be appreciated as I feel my way out on this. I am not the most knowledgeable guy for Space sharks. As I look at them I keep thinking they are what you get when you throw a space wolf in the pool. ;)

Thanks!

If that's what you see in your mind when you say Space Sharks, run with it!

As far as weapon goes, when fighting with two weapons, one is always held closer than the other, so if your Trooper is getting ready to smack some chump with his chainsword, the pistol should be held close to the body.

If you haven't started painting the jump-pack yet, I'd suggest an old-school turbofan pack instead of the newer style, as those look more aquatic than the new ones.

You're right, both helmet and not have great potential. I'd build both and see which one I liked better. If you go for the bare-headed look, you can always hang the helmet on his belt.

[Edit: whoa, 1k posts since the '05 meltdown!]

I say give up.

:(

OK...really, sounds good...I would go helmetless. A face has the potential to bring so much realism, and personality to the piece. It also makes for a better focal point. Some of the expressions on the faces are pretty damn good, and a stunning paint job will only help. A helmet is just too impersonal in my opinion.

Now...GET STARTED!!!

HOWDY.

So I have gathered the initial bits I plan to use. Spent a fair amount of time cleaning them right and proper.

For those who have not comepted in Golden Demons, let me let in on something. The tiniest little error or missed detail will be noticed and cost you.

In my last demon competition, two tiny little things held me back from doing better. One was the figure was not firmly all the way down on the base, the other was my highlights were not sharp enough. These errors were so tiny and I did not even notice till the judges pointed out the what and why. I was dismayed once I also noticed them, and chalk it up as a lesson well learned.

So this is not much of an update, as I am off to get some blue tack to help with the planning and positionimg.

My thoughts thus far are to go with no helmet, a plasma pistol and chainsword. I am not decided on whether go with him just running across some barricades or to go with landing on a rampart of some sort. I have a kinda neat idea for a jump pack but that will have to wait a bit while I figure if I am even going to use one or not.

I am holding the combat shield in case I change my mind and want to use it instead.

Anyhoo, pics of the first set of parts.

Also, I have decided to work up my not even halfway done entry for last years squad. It is a 5 man unit of exorcists.

They will nedd to be stripped and worked up, but I am very happy with how the conversions turned out. Pictures of those later.

Here's my Space Sharks WIP if you want some inspiration. I'd also definitely say check out the IA by Tiberius.

Some thoughts.

- I like the torso you chose.

- I went for all beakies, but this pic shows a fin on top of a MK7 helmet which looks dope.

- Just make sure you trim the fangs if you use a SW bare head. Maybe GS lots of smaller sharp teeth?

- My vets are gonna have shark tooth necklaces

- The jump pack you could play with to look older or perhaps even able to work underwater?

Howdy!

OK so I found some hobbytac and have been playing around with poses.

They are attached for your viewing and input. Ultimately the choice of pose will be mine, but I think that a careful choice of pose is just as important as the selection of paint colors.

Also keep in mind that the hair on this guy will be shaved down so he won't have the crazy straight up hair. It will be lots of tight braids close to the scalp, like some islanders wear.

@natsirtm,

that drawing is what gave me my inspiration to give this a go.

Anyhoo, here they are

Pose 1

This pose is interesting in that it has a quality about that conveys leaping or flying toward the enemy with everything the figure has. It is a little odd with both arms extended, but at the same time it is like he is extending to get to grips as soon as possible. Lots of potential espacially with a good base to work with with to help support the pose.

Pose 2

This guy looks like he is ready for action. Looking around to see who dies first. Easy to work with, good dynamics. A little creative arm positioning could dictate more or less action.

Pose 3

Pose 3 looks to me like he has found who dies first and is going to bring the Emperors mercy upon them. I kinda like this one.

POse 4

This one says " Follow me!" I think might look better with a standard instead of a chainsword. Still a cool banner could enhance or detract from the model. Worthy of consideration I think.

Pose 5

This one really isn't doing anything for me. I had to try all manner of poses and this one, to me is meh....

http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a87/garness/Golden%20Demon%2009/Pose5.jpg

Pose 6

Tried with this to see what it would like if he was landing from above. It is ok but not among the top choices.

I like pose 4, all though you could have him just landing and with a masive waving banner in the pistol hand, and that would be cool.

FOE

EDIT: You could have the banner as though its "framing" the model, ie put it behind him

  • 2 weeks later...

Howdy.

So here are the WIP pics of my Exorcists unit.

I did over the summer, but never got them done in time for GD08, so now they are on for GD09.

Most of them have paint on them already but I am displeased with how they had turned out so they will be getting an ink bath to darken everything again so I begin fresh. I don't really want to strip them because of all the GS work I have done, so we are going to use an alternative method.

Anyhoo, here are the bare metal with GS for you to review and comment on.

Also, I have started assembly on the Space Shark. Not much yet other than the torso to the legs, pictures up soon for that once some real progress is made.

C&C welcome!

For the assault Marine, pose 3 FTW. The core of the model is unobstructed, and the face and swoard are at the same angle, adding to the 'flow'. Personally, I'd ditch the head for a newer one, because it makes him look like he should be flying...it's not bad though.
