Abaddon the Despoiler, first among the Archenemy

So, tonight I fought against Abaddon the Despoiler and his Black Legion. I had heard legends of Abaddon's horrors, so I decided to play it safe. I sent my two most reliable Dreadnaughts, Bornis Irontail and Mjolstin Krakenhide, ahead in drop pods. They were to act as shock assault units, to hold off Abaddon and his possessed bodyguard while the long fangs set up their shot and the blood claws rolled up to support in their crusader pattern land raider. The laughing axes grey hunter pack was on reserve, to drop in and help with the cleanup.

That was the plan.

Abaddon the Despoiler is a living Terror. He severed the ceramite clad vessel of Bornis, extra armor and all (ironclad), and wrecked him. At the same time, khorne berserkers en masse swarmed the venerable dreadnaught Mjolstin, and a well placed meltabomb detonated his reactor, killing one of the berserkers and leaving poor Krakenhide no more than a crater.

The long fangs got a few shots off; they wrecked a rhino with a lascannon and killed most of Abaddon's possessed bodyguard with their plasma cannons. Moments later, the laughing axes dropped in, preparing their shots only to find a daemon prince materializing before them. They emptied their bolters into the beast, and then began swinging the power axes from whence they took their namesake. Killed to the last man. This left naught but the blood claws and myself, hunkered down in the Land Raider, to face the beast. As we were training the guns on him and beginning to open fire. the madman charged the land raider. What happened next left me beside myself. His sword, an unholy thing, opened the land raider's hull, severing a key power line and leaving the vehicle a non-entity. With naught left but our wits and our blades, and my personal lightning claws, we charged the beast and the khorne berserkers who were still with him. Seven blood claws were killed in a single swing of his blade, before they even landed a blow. A few of the more promising pups managed to bleed him, the first time I saw the beast show pain, and several more managed to make short work of the berserkers. I was preparing to avenge the death of the pups, when the daemon prince came roaring up behind me. He savaged me with his blade, but the belt of Russ kept me safely in Russ's care. I slew the monster with a single stroke of my claw, only to turn and find Abaddon and his encroaching legions, myself standing alone. The only reason I'm alive today is due to a local imperial guard regiment which had arrived to bolster our forces at the last moment; the artillery shelling managed to force Abaddon to fall back and left me alive.

((Okay, so my wolf lord actually got decapitated by Abaddon, but then who would be telling the story? :-p))

Anyway my brothers... how would you tackle this monster, first among the archenemy?

i fought him this weekend, and completely ganked him. this is how it happened.

we played 3000 points, Chaos vs Wolves, and as my friend and i talk crap to each other on a regular basis i talked myself into facing abaddon and the lash lord of chaos in the same list...

abby deepstruck behind my lines, but i kept my Wolves in a tight half circle to repel the chaos units with mutally supporting firing and assaults. when abby landed, my long fangs opened fired on him, but scattered on me and killed 2 of my 6 wolf guard termies...so i charged abby and his depleted retinue (only 1 of 5 chaos termies left) with a Rune Priest in TDA, Wolf Priest, 2 Wolf Guard and Wolf lord in TDA.

Abby struck first, rolled a 1 for his daemon weapon. i skipped my units attacks so my WL could do the blow. he killed him in 1 go. (abby was wounded by firepower in my turn).

so my advice. force him to fight. he has a 1 in 6 chance of rolling a 1 for his daemon sword. if he rolls high, then pack the retinue with storm shields and laugh as you roll 3+.

there is a reason he is truely first among the chaos hordes, he is almost unstoppable. Int 6 strength 8 with re-rolls to wound, ouch. One thing I can say, like any MC DO NOT go at him with dreadnoughts!! Shoot at him a lot and assault with termies w/ storm shields to stay alive or large numbers of troops to force multiple saves on him without loosing all your good weapons. Or better yet since he costs as much as a land raider try to leave him alone or tie him up in combat to allow yourself time to pick apart the rest of the army. After all, he can only contest one obj. anyway.

I thought if you make yourself look big, waving your arms in the air and shouting at him he'll go away... I also heard throwing sticks helps too.

As WL Kieran said, I also faced a lash prince, abby list, and since it was on the spot, I decided to call an old friend Inquisitor Hrothgar (he's on our side, he values his relationship with Logan and does whatever it takes to please the Space Wolves because he knows we're needed to help against the chaos infestation), bring in my trusted 4 plasma cannon long fangs, and watch the good times roll when old abby deep struck in. :)

Next time, abaddon will have a Land Raider. Massed bolter fire can also do Abaddon in, along with other similar characters(Lysander)

I agree completely. A 2+ armour save can only go so far before it fails.

Although WG Termies with TH/SS helps :D

@wolf89:i used a RP with a runic staff in a effort to nullify the Lash, but failed 2 of 3 times. the chaos sorcers ld 10 gives him the edge. but he (we played a team game a week ago, and the termies and WL dropped 27 of 30 orks in a single CC phase...so he might not have wanted to mess with them) he kept lashing them back. if he lashed them forward, i had three dreads ready to support him (1 ven, 1 ironclad, 1 normal).

i might have to think of the inquisitor in my army...that could be interesting...

@rayray: hey ray! nice to see you here in the fang. please leave your chaos artifacts at the door!

How to kill Abby.... Shooty lots of shooty. Lead him around with a shooty squad for a few turns and then route him with Bloodclaws or other equally nasty HQ unit (WL/WG etc.). Seems to work but if he doesnt take the bait your in for a nasty battle.

The cheapest way to stop the Lash is the wolf tail. its only one point and it gives you a one-in six chance of negating it. Its worked for me before, just don't count on it. With only ld9 our preists basically need a six to beat ld 10 in a roll-off anyway

G

i never thought of the tail...what would happened if the lord and a few termies passed, but 1 failed? would he get dragged away from the unit or what?

A model protected by such a talisman is not affected by enemy psychic powers on a D6 roll of a 6+. The power still takes effect, but any character that makes his save will be unaffected.
C:SW WTT description in Armoury

During the course of a game, it's possible a unit will get broken up and lose unit coherency, usually because it takes casualties. If this happens, the models in the unit must be moved in such a way that they restore coherency in their next Movement phase.
BBB page 12 under Unit Coherency

So whatever models pass, they don't move, those that don't pass, get moved as normal, then next movement turn they'll move back into coherency.

Around these parts we figured that if the suad leader or attached HQ (I only but it on my RP or WGPL if I have a few extra points) made the save, he keeps the whole squad in line because you cann't choose to move out of cohesion. Its only a one-in-six change of happinging so that doesn't seem too broken to me or the players around here.

Not as broken as the lash anyway ^_^

This is wrong and doesn't work, lash would move those guys that aren't effected by the WTT. The following turn they'd move back into coherency, SO, if you don't want your IC to die from being separated from a squad (out of 2" he's now not attached) I'd just forget the whole wolf tail talisman.

I thought IC's couldnt leave their retinues..... so even though he was out of coherency hed still be part of the same squad right? Thus shooting wouldnt be any worse than normal, and his WGBG would get to move towards him if assaulted... 6" right?

I was referring to GAK's comment when he was talking about him being attached to a squad instead of a retinue. If it was a retinue like I stated further above with my quotes from the C:SW and BBB, they'd just move back into coherency the following turn (or whenever they can move again, say they're pinned or something) as if they were all one squad.
