Celestial Lions Terminator

At the closing of the deadline, I sent pictures of my entry at 2357h local time; barely 3 minutes to spare and hardly finished. But it had to do. As it turned out I got myself a whopping 7 votes, which earned me bragging rights amongst the mods, seeing as I was the highest placed (ex)mod in the pack. Little good that did me though B) ; of course I had hoped to go further but in the end it always turns out the same; time, time, time... Or better; a lack thereof and its impact on the eventual quality.

So; I finally got around to finishing this guy and wondering why he didn't look the way I had intended. I had been going for a NMM gold look; the Celestial Lions have golden armour and I thought I'd set myself a nice challenge as NMM is a reasonably new technique for me. Regrettably, as Aurelius Rex rightfully pointed out, the end result was lacking and it looked more like a mustardy yellow than gold.

I had had ample time to ponder the question why this was so and eventually, I realised what it was; the deepest shades were not deep enough, making the gold lack in contrast. So, I set out to darken the lower end of the layers/blends and I feel this has improved the overall look.

Also, I finished some forgotten things, like cables, gems, badges etc, that I had no time to do before the deadline. The end result still leaves a lot to be desired but he's been standing in this state in my display cabinet for a bit now, so I thought I'd do some more of my crappy photography and show him to you guys; it's been too long I've posted any minis. Something I'm hoping to remedy in the near future though.

So; here he is, in all his (attempted) NMM glory:

The base is a resin one form the GW Cities of Death basing set (in which I'm thoroughly disappointed; the helmet cast onto the base had sprue flash cast on it from the plastic bit that was used for the original! ^_^ ). I thought it was in character for the mini, as I am displaying him as present at the Celestial Lions' deathblow at Armageddon; the helmet on the base is from a fallen brother marine, as is the broken bannerpole. Boltershells are everywhere (yeah yeah; caseless blahblah I know, but it looks cool :P ). The Firewastes Army Group North badge on his Powerfist represents that too. The scroll on his left leg reads 'Memento Khattar', in reference to the incident that ultimately sealed their fate.

So; let's hear it... :)

Dude he is awesome !!! I'm a huge fan of CL's and would love to hear how you painted the yellow (my attempts have failed horribly). Do you have a completed CL army? My only criticism is the backgroung colour sucks as, for my older eyes, it sucks some of the detail away.

NMM Celestial Lion ?!

Gorgeous... :D

[criticism time]

I do believe you've understood the way to highlight/shade where needed, and your colours choices look really good, but your blending need some more practice.

(please keep in mind I shouldn't be able to achieve what you did on this mini, that's just constructive criticism..).

For exemple, the dark brown paint seems to lack definition, it's not blended as good as the lighest colours.. It looks more like dirt/weathering to me..

[/criticism time]

But even though it's not some kind of "Flawless NMM of Death", I have to say it's one of the best mini I've seen for weeks on B&C !!!

And your freehands here and there are worth the time you spend on them !

Keep practicing and you'll be rewarded !! ^_^

:) the def' :)

Thanks :) I painted the entire gold with shades of Snakebite Leather, Golden Yellow and White (that is: with their VGC equivalents). I later added the darker shading with the VGC equivalent of Scorched Brown and loads of water, almost in a wash.

I do not have a completed army at all; this is just one mini painted up like this. Would I attempt an entire army, I'd probably lose my sanity before I'd make it halfway. Which would be about a decade after my pension ran out... ^_^ I could have done him up in the Celestial Lions parent chapter, my own Fiery Lions, but that would have given the game away too easily. Besides; like I said, the NMM gold was a nice challenge...

The background is actually a sheet of white paper. The reason it's so yellowy is because of the modes my camera has in combination with the lights on my painting table. It's not a bad camera, and they're not bad lights either, it's just the combination that gets me crappy results like these...

:P the def' :FA:

Also thanks! :) I know exactly what you mean in regard to the darker browns. They're not as bad in real life but they're absolutely not up to the standard of the rest of the shades. This is simply because they were an afterthought; an attempt to rectify the way the gold did not look quite golden. I'm not too sure if I succeeded at all but I feel the end result is better because of it. The reason it's sloppier is because I rushed it, to get this guy finished and off the WIP shelf, as I'm doing with all the minis that have been lounging there for too long. I'm off to finish the base of an OT mini later this weekend, which will also be done faster than usual, just to clear the WIP shelf. I will then have time to get started on some new projects... :P
