Grimfoe
Ho, brothers!! As many of you may already know, I'm in the process of refitting my 2nd edition army to current rules. As a result, I have many models that are no longer legal, etc. Most of these will stay the same until the highly anticipated new codex is finally released. I do have one question that can be resolved immediately, however. What should I do about my Ragnar model. I painted Ragnar when he first came out and he is picture here: I'm not unhappy with the paint job even tho the model leaves something to be desired, it fits the mould of my army. I enjoy having many of the older wolves in my force. I'm having trouble with the banners, though. I noticed that even GW eventually got rid of the backpack that allowed my group to nickname him "banner boy." They are obviously ridiculous if you try to look at the model with any sense of realism, but I'm not sure if I should take them off. I think they do lend a certain second edition feel to the model. What do you think? While I'm thinking of it, what about Bjorn? Should I take his off? Or does it somehow demonstrate his venerable status? Thorgad
Bjorn needs that banner. It's about the only thing left that reminds people that he was bad-ass when he was alive too! It also makes him easily recognizable as something other than your run-of-the-mill Dreadnought, and I think that definitely counts for something. Ragnar is bad-ass enough as it is, but I think you're right in that it adds a certain 2nd edition feel to the model, especially since he's painted the way he is. They do make him look a little bit silly, though. Especially since his stance is already so wide and not very dynamic, the banners just make it seem sort-of ridiculous. I honestly don't know what you should do, but to give you an idea of what he'd look like without the banners, I photoshopped your picture: Maybe that'll help you decide on whether they stay or they go. ^_^ http://i361.photobucket.com/albums/oo54/Moling_bucket/ragnar-without-banners.jpg Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/155235-ragnar-blackmane/#findComment-1812557 Share on other sites

Vassakov
Certainly keep Bjorns banner, makes me wonder about adding one to mine... Personally, I'm not a big fan of any backpack banners, preferring the handheld standards. If you are careful, it may be possible to remove them and transfer one/both to a banner bearer. WolfLordLars
I actually had to specially buy the "Bjorn" model rather than the "SW Venerable Dread" model, because of the back banner. When they re-release rules for Bjorn (if I say it enough, it might happen) he will be assembled and painted. I dont use back banners on anyone, even though I have that banner backpack for Ragnar. I just dont like the look of them. My Long Fang Pack Leader has one, but since they have not seen the light of day since 2005.... Commissar Volker
My converted Ragnar has the original banners, but not you mention it I like the idea of giving his personal banner to another model as a company standard.... It's not custom, just really old. (I actually think I have an additional banner and banner pole if anyone is interested. Just PM me.) MaveriK
Banners on miniatures can be great, but in reality are more aesthetic than anything. In game terms, certain characters that do carry banners can be pretty much summarized from this quote from the movie SAVING PRIVATE RYAN. Corporal Upham: Caparzo, is it? Private Caparzo: Hey Corporal, drop dead! Corporal Upham: Got you. Private Caparzo: And another thing, every time you salute the Captain, you make him a target for the Germans. Do us a favor. Don't do it. Especially when I'm standing next to him, capisci? Corporal Upham: Uh, capisci. I think that Bjorn, especially, could use a proper base.
