Ork Rehab

I've been playing Orks as my introductory army into 40K for little over a year now, and I have recently won some CSM in a local tournament. Rather than try and konvert them into 'proppa' models :tu: , I'm considering branching out and trying something a little different and be a Chaos player.

Here's the loot I picked up:

5 CSM, CCW and pistols

5 Terminators, still picking out which weapon is which

1 Tzeench Sorceror in Terminator armor

1 Suspiciously Slaneeshi-looking Rhino

9 Thousand Sons, 1 Aspiring Sorceror

1 Vindicator

Now, looking at the list, the first thing that strikes me is that it is TINY. WEEDY. Supposedly, I can get 1000 points out of this, but I'm having a hard time figuring out where all the points went (probably the Terminators, and yes, I have the Codex). But, the thing is that I'm an Ork player by heart, and if I don't have at least 60 choppa boyz screaming for the other side of the board, I feel undermanned. Furthermore, it seems like nothing in this list will even think about getting into close combat, unless the Sorcerors want to Wind of Chaos somebody in the face, so it looks to me like a 'sit back and dakka away' list, which again is a very alien notion to me. Gang, I am a stranger in a strange, non-Green land, and I have some questions:

How is this list supposed to function, especially in an objective-grabbing scenario?

What benchmarks do you use to determine if you have an appropriate-sized force?

How do CSM grab and contest multiple objectives with relatively few (and expensive) scoring units?

Well it looks like you might have the start of a Tzeentch themed army. But if you are looking for a more "horde" like Chaos army I would go for an Undivided army since the basic Marine is pretty decent in CC since they have a BP and CCW in addition to a bolter.

With only 2 Troop types and one of them being fairly small you're best/only bet is to have the 5 man squad camp an objective in your area and the Thousand Sons advance in the Rhino. Terminators and Vindicator will spearhead the assault and hopefully screen the Thousand Sons from anything horribly scary.

For me, I use a few benchmarks.

Atleast 1 Troop squad per 500 points. Typically I actually do 1+1 per 500, so 3 at 1000, 4 at 1500 etc but then again I play Undivided CSMs so my guys are cheaper than the Cult Troops.

As for total number of Marines, I consider 20-30 at 1000 to be acceptance and 30-50 to be solid at 1500. Again this is for Undivided. Those squads are all decked out with special weapons, champions and mounted in rhinos.

What I do with my 1500 point list is split my 4 rhino squads into 2 types, objective holders and objective takers. Usually I use some combination of Defilers and Vindicators to support my Rhino squads as they advance up the board, throwing pie plates left and right to thin out any hordes. I then focus 2 squads per objective so that in the end, I should hold 2 total. The rest of my army works to kill their Troops and possibly contest. Thats just a rough idea though.

As for your army, I think you have a decent start. I believe that buying another box of 10 CSMs and a Rhino would be a good investment. The only other option would be if you want to buy more Thousand Sons or some other Cult unit, which would work too.

So this looks like an interesting start there. Thousand sons are cool, but they really are shooty troops and not so good in assault.

Like minigun suggested I recommend getting lots of plastic CSM troops- they are like loyalist Tac marines but having a bolt pistol really makes them a bigger threat in assault. They are relatively cheap (for chaos) and good for holding objectives.

Tzeentch I guess is all about shooting and magic, which is totally not-orky, but it might be fun to play.

Vindicators are pretty neat, but if you take 1, take at least 2.
