My Ironclad Dread Project

Hey fellas... I'm not usually much of a conversion guy, but the new Ironclad is just begging to be represented in my army. I'm going to be posting a few concept pics here soon but for the time being I want to describe some of the ideas and see what kind of feedback you guys might have...

1.) Replace the standard stubby dreadnought legs with sentinel legs... this has been done quite well in the past and makes for a much more dynamic looking model. Also has the benefit of beefing up the dreadnought in height.

2.) using the dread's old leg, lengthen the standard close combat arm and pose it to bend a bit in front of the torso.

3.) Cut the weapon parts off of a right arm (probably an assault cannon arm)... install a piston based seismic hammer. I have seen a few good ideas in this line, using a sentinel leg with a dread CCW fist at the end for example. I think the sentinel leg looks good, but something more simple might suffice to0. I'll need to toy with this.

4.) To represent the increased armor my idea is to mount a large shield similar in design to a terminator storm shield, only larger. It would be mounted on the arm bent in front of the body so the dread would basically look like it is running forward holding a shield in front of it. This fits the assault/linebreaker theme of the ironclad.

5.) mount a melta barrel and a heavy flamer... the heavy flamer I am moving because of the shield... probably mount the flamer under the torso and the melta under the piston arm shoulder.

The problems with this design... if I decide to go with hurricane bolters the logical choice would be to convert a missile launcher arm, but that would get rid of the shield arm, and thus the armor changing feature. I'm not completely sold on using hurricanes though, as the extra cc attack might just be worth it. Also, I'm getting a block when I try to figure out what to use as a suitable shield. Any thoughts? A slightly chopped siege shield might work, but I'd hate to ruin a perfectly good siege shield ;)

Speaking of which, what is the best way to post pics on here??

besides the legs, this sounds VERY similar to my ironclad project.

heres my chainfist:

and the dread its going on to when i get around to finishing/painting the arm:

except mine just has sentinel feet, not legs. putting on the sentinel feet gave it a lot of extra hieght. put in something at the hip and youll have a lot taller dread already.

note: shields on dread tend to knock out a LOT of detail, so dont make it too big.

anyway, hope those help with your ideas. there are more pics of the dread in my photobucket album (in my sig)

Here are some pics of a custom penitent engine (at least I think that is what it is)... the concepts I'm wanting to use though are pretty much the same for the piston arm and the legs.

for a 'piston based seismic hammer' consider using the barrels of a tau burst cannon. most tau players will have a spare.

for reference i'm refering to the front guns on this

Good call... I'm actually a Tau player as well so I have plenty of those to spare! I'll have to take a look at that and see what it might look like. Any thoughts on what might look good as a shield?

Sons of Horus... That's not the Ironclad, like I said it is outfitted such that I believe it is a custom penitent engine for the Sisters (and a pretty damned good one too). I'm using the pics as an example of the legs I want to use, as well as a concept for the piston seismic hammer.

well the side hatch on that hammerhead would make a great greek style shield for a start  or perhaps some modification to one of the forgeworld rhino/LR doors

e.g:

failing that the lid off one of the new style paint pots, look at a paint pot from above.. picture cables coming from where the 'hinge' is running into the rear powerplant. scale is about right for a dread. sure there are plenty of household bits aswell that might be suitable.

  • 4 weeks later...

As an update to the progress of my Ironclad conversion... my friend sent me a couple spare sentinels he had so I could butcher them. I cut the top leg segment off because it made the whole thing just too tall and gangly.

It looks pretty good on the model, though I need to put some armor plating on it before it will be done.

As I said, I wanted to lengthen the CCW arm to make it more dynamic. I ended up also putting the melta barrel in the palm of the CCW... I think the melta retracting or extending out of the palm makes for a cool attack concept.

I am still tossing seismic hammer arm concepts around in my head and am planning on tacking a few things together to figure our which way I want to go. I found a good shield bit, but it just doesn't look right to me. I might have to do a bit of armor plating on the body.

Thoughts thus far?

One thing I should stress to people is that I am attempting to do this conversion with as few additional purchases as possible. Had my friend not been able to donate the sentinels I would have just bought the leg bits off of battlewagon bits. So far all of the other pieces used have been from the standard dread kit (except for the meltagun barrel). Yes, I'm a cheapo. The CCW arm was lengthened from the dread leg off of the assault on black reach dread. I'm doing two of these conversions in parallel, using one AoBR dread and one standard dread, so the second CCW arm will have a conventional dread leg segment. In case it isn't obvious I thought the conventional dread feet would make nice beefed up CCW hands (and super simple to do... just scored them with cutters then bent by hand). Actually the AoBR feet are even better because they already had a hole for the melta to go into.

I don't know... I might mock something up to see if I like it better, but I actually think the hand I have on there now looks pretty decent, unless you are talking about the seismic hammer.

As far as the seismic hammer is concerned at the moment I am thinking of going with a piston mounted drill... I'm going to mock something up hopefully today or tomorrow.

And for another installment of my progress...

I've begun the mockup on my proposed "Seismic" arm... I like the concept and still think it maintains a dynamic appearance. I also armored the legs a bit and added a missile launcher to represent the assault launchers. I will try to find a place for the spot light later.

Enjoy!

Now, to explain what I am doing with the seismic arm... my plan is a piston driven drill/hammer (depending on what looks the best really). 3 piston shafts (you see them coming out of the front) will go all the way through the box and have a stop plate on the back end. I will probably leave a bit sticking out the back end in the final product just to make the piston mechanics stand out more. On the front end of the piston shafts will either be some sort of hammer surface or a drillbit surface. I'm going to put some guitar string wires running from the shoulder down to the smaller box on the piston box for hydraulic lines.

Any feedback would be appreciated!

I did an Iron Clad for a guy I know. I used a sentinel leg for the piston driven seismic hammer.

I do like how your feet are coming out. Usually I don't like the look of sentinel legs on dreads. They almost always come out too tall or too thin, but yours came out just right. I also like the armor you have on it. Did you use the cowling from a razorback turret?

IamJacks - Same bit, but I think these came from a LRC kit... I believe it is a cowling from one of the TLLCs. Also, nice looking Dread. I am going for something similar on the arm, just not using another sentinel leg.

Sons of Horus - I've never liked the conventional legs... makes the dread look like Hank's Dad from King of the Hill (Shins shot off in a war). To me, the sentinel legs just make it so much more dynamic and makes it look like it is actually striding forward. I've tried to offset the frailty of the legs with armor plating.
