Scout Snowbiker

I'm working on a Scout-only army for an arctic-themed Chapter. Basically, the 10th company was on a traditional year-long hunt on the eternally frozen hemisphere of their home world, when the rest of the Chapter discovers and is overtaken by an ancient source of Chaos. Up returning and finding their brothers have wiped themselves out, they retreat to the arctic region. I'm thinking about using a white and gold/tan scheme similar to the Hoth troopers in Empire Strikes back and what warflag recently did so well (thread). They will receive extra layers of clothing, probably some quilted like those Hoth troopers and the Elysian Drop Troop models from original White Dwarf article.

My first mini is a marine biker with a twist. Using bits from Imperial Guard tank kits, I'm making a snowbike. Unlike a snowmobile, a snowbike has one long tread and steers by leaning (possibly hydraulic/ballast assisted), similar to a racing bike.

Obviously, I have a lot of work yet to do on the bike(e.g., sculpting exhaust tubes to the tailpipes, giving him legs, cleaning up some of the detail), not to mention sculpting the snow drift that he is riding up onto. However, I figured that I'd give everyone a "first look".

C&C welcome.

I really like the backstory you've got going, although for the actual model I think the bike looks a bit stunted, maybe extend the track out more towards the front more, or keep the front wheel and have tracks on the back like a half-track although I know you said no to this before.

maybe have two 'ski' type thing coming from the front to give it some length? wouldn't be hard to cut some plasticard to the right shape and bend it slightly at the end (with some low heat applied)

e.g:

with 2 ski's of course  just being lazy and didn't bother with the second as should be clear what i mean?

I forgot one pic:

Man, those little details that I need to clean up are obvious at that scale.

Shiodome: nice edit! I agree that it works in that pic, but if you try it on the pic that I just added, it looks forced. You've basically ended up with a snow version of my original inspiration:

That's what this guy went with:

I decided, instead, to try going for something more like:

Maybe on version 2, I will see if I can get that front wheel (the raised one) in there to give it a less "stunted" look. B)

The main problem is it still seems that if it hit a lump of snow it would just dig in, rather than go up it. The picture your using as inspiration is better because it isn't as front heavy as the one you have is.

Either adding another track section like the inspiration has, or moving the handles further backwards would work better in my opinion, either way I still really like the idea behind it.

There's an old Imperial Guard army floating around out there, where the whole army was on skiis, I think they were called the Ice Wasps, if you needed some inspiration.

I love the look of the biker, but I have two little gripes:

No helmet (his face would freeze!)

and the skiis tend to go out more to the sides of the tracks instead of just in front.

That being said, I love this idea. +watcher

See, now you had to go and get all practical on me. OK, I may be convinced. I definitely want to stay with something closer to the Hyanide snowbike, so I'm thinking about something like this:

Basically, I'd cutout the front tread guard (like the Hyanide), add a new wheel/cog and then bring the track out around it. In theory, it will work. We'll see how it works in practice.

No going back:

Well, other than the fact that the only plastic tube that I have is too big (in diameter), meaning that I will have to do some more GS (or BS) work, it turned out pretty well:

(Pic deleted and replaced with pic in next post)

Unfortunately, I ran out of the dark gray track sections, so the one right in the middle of the tread guard is light gray, making it hard to see in the pic. It should look a lot better once it's painted.

Looks, good. Although I'm more in favour of the version with a ski.

I once did some snowbike conversions.

You'll find them mainly under fast attack, but the odd individual character is riding one as well:

Angeli Cantori

The trike is the only one, that has tracks, unfortunately they cannot be seen from the angle of the pic.

Seeing your conversion, I wish, I did the same thing as you do (but with a monoski in front).

Keep up that good work.
