Generic Painting schemes in Tournaments

I've never played in a tournament, but I'm planning to [eventually], and I'm currently building an army with that in mind.

But I'd like to experiment with various space marine lists, and codexes. My plan was to paint my marines a very generic paint scheme [flat black], with NO chapter affiliation markings. Just black armored space marines. No markings on the shoulder pads.

I was hoping that way I could play them as Dark Angels, as well as Codex Marines [in seperate lists and events, of course] as long as I filled the army list correctly, and bought characters if I wanted to play them. Technically, my 'Deathwing" army would be 'what you see is what you get' EXCEPT-

They would have no chapter markings-AND-

They'd have black armor.

Otherwise, they'd be EXACTLY the same as the bleached bone guys.

From what I understand, Dark Angels Terminators painted their armor black untill some tragedy befell them, so I could say my Deathwing was 'pre-tragedy befalling', but that's pushing it, maybe :D

I've checked the GT rules on the GW site, and I can't find anything specifically forbidding me from using my black armored marines, but maybe someone has had an experience with this issue and can possible save me some trouble or worse, making a fool of myself :P

Thanx

What Todosi said.

Hell, you can paint all of you models like Dark Angels, right down to chapter and company markings.......and then tell you opponent that you are using Black Templar rules.

My Brotherhood of Caliban uses Dark Angel markings and iconography (in salute to my first and largest army) with my own colourscheme.

I jump freely between the various Space Marine variants. I just make absolutely sure that my opponent knows exactly what he is facing.

thank you, gentlemen, for your replies.

I don't think I'll have a problem at GW hosted events. But I did have a very angry Blood Angel player tell me I would be unable to play my unmarked marines as Dark Angels at events taking place at his favorite gaming spot. I think he's under the impression-and he may be right-that he will be unable to play his very, very red Blood Angels, with all the official iconography, as codex marines at tourneys there. I suppose playing marines painted with a chapter-specific color scheme as a completely different chapter may create a bizzare moment if your opponent gets caught forgetting for a second-during turn 4, say-that a rule for the original army applies to a situation. I can hear the screaming now-'I forgot that your not Blood Angels....I chased those assault marines 'cuz I thought they were a scoring unit!'

Awkward.....

But since I plan on my marines bearing absolutely no chapter markings, I'm hoping that gives me the freedom to try out various armies and listsuntil I strike upon something that feels right for me. I really don't have 'winning' luck [if I need a 3 or better on the dice, you can bet the farm I'll roll a 1. Seriously. The farm.], so I'm hoping to find a list that's just fun to play, I'm not even real concerned that it's ultra competetive, just legal! which led to this question.

thanx again fellas. Much appreciated.
