13thWarrior
"The Space Wolves have a perverse disdain for jump packs, preferring to fight with both feet firmly planted on the ground "as Russ intended". Sometimes however, a pack of Blood Claws (who are too short in the tooth to know any better) will be equipped with jump packs to carry out a special mission." Space Wolves Codex p11 I understand this perspective but also love the effectiveness that I have had with my Blood Claw Assault Troop. This pack's reputation is as the craziest most impulsive unit; accompishing their specific mission is of the utmost importance. Their number is small (3) and are led by an edgy Wolf Guard (I imagine the insane Irishman from Braveheart). Most recently the pack went toe-2-toe assaulting an Ironclad Dreadnaught allied to radical Inquisition. They were victorious after 3 turns (6 rounds of assault) So I know that this is unorthodox and not as Russ intended but really enjoyable to play. Can the Battle Brothers assist me with storyline and fluff in this dilemna? And also explain why there isn't the disdain for Land Speeders (feet are definitely off the ground and the Grey Hunter pilots/gunners don't even get to attack in assault) I call that perverse! WolfLordLars
Simple, they are in a vehicle. Afterall, Drop Pods, Thunderhawks, and Space Ships are not thought poorly of. Flying through the air strapped to a jet pack is. :) The fluff I have for my Jet Pack troops is that it is a 'last chance' style unit. They did something to screw up, thus their reduced number (8 vs 15). Rather than the bike troops (who did something good, but are not quite Grey Hunter material yet), they made them jump pack troops. So, they throw themselves at the enemy with a reckless abandon to redeem their honor and status, with the hope that (maybe) they can live to see status as a Grey Hunter. So far, of the less than half-dozen games they have played in over the past 5 years they have not done too bad.. but not worth the risk of points. One memorable game was when they engaged an enemy marine assault squad and sent them packing (your Sgt has a power weapon? How cute.. so does ours, oh, and two of our guys also have power fists!). They then ended up charging into a command squad on bikes with a Chaplain and Librarian in it (or might of been a Librarian and Captain?) and in two turns of combat sent them running as well, with the librarian as the sole survivor with a single wound left (I LOVE power fists!). They then proceeded to run after them for the rest of the game, getting shot to death later. Grey Mage
Mrr.... I prefer to go with the 2nd ed fluff where they were used, but it just wasnt a common tactic. They are effective and with the newer cover save rules theyre a bit more survivable. They could use a points drop, but then a few things in our army could... but like most of the list theyre fairly sound anyways. Bjorn the Fell-Handed
I personally prefer the +1 toughness. For me, its just a better use fo the points for what you'll use them for ( fast assaults) and turboboosting they make good fire magnets. ;) Bjorn Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/155606-as-russ-intended/#findComment-1821457 Share on other sites
13thWarrior
I am now starting to model some Blood Claw Bikes ... I really am liking the idea of a Space Wolf Attack Bike led by a WolfGuard on bike or even better ... led by a Battle Leader on a bike and 4 Fenris Wolves! I don't necessary like that Blood Claw Bikes only have a bolt pistol or ccw or upgrade. The Blood Claws in Jump Packs get the 2nd ccw for even more attacks. On another note ... I am re-reading William King's Ragnar's Claw and notice a description in a passage on page 332 of the Space Wolf Omnibus ... "He (Ragnar) glanced along the row of shaven heads, each with the one long strip of hair across the skull that was the mark of the Blood Claw ..." I had not noticed this before. Is their more evidence in literature, codexes, stories, articles, fluff, etc., etc., to support this description? I have two models that adhere to this look that I am converting to Blood Claws This one has a bolter that I need to change! http://img185.imageshack.us/img185/4870/spameq8.jpg == REDACTED - JUVENILE & NONCONSTRUCTIVE ==? Sköll Khan
The Blood Claws in Jump Packs get the 2nd ccw for even more attacks. Can you do this? (I'm weighing up whether to use Codex:SW or Codex: CSM (khorne), for my 13th Company based army) It would indeed be nice to have an extra attack, (but surely you could do the same for Zerkers), ...and not have to dishonour myself by using firearms. Wolf Lord Jukes
I've had a lot of fun with my blood claws on jump packs and I actually really like the fluff of only the crazy young Blood Claws being the ones to launch themselves into the air... I couldn't imagine Grey Hunters with bolters wanting to do the same... I hope the new codex reduces their points, because right now I hardly play them with their high cost, and if I do I usually include a unit of bikes as well so they aren't all alone with their speed... McBain
Personally since i have had the same wolves army (give or take) since the original model release in 1994 ( maybe 93) prior to the release of the 2nd edition... I have always had blood claws with jump packs as i feel that the youngest and most battle hungry of the company would take any advantage to get into combat. Currently im carrying 20 of them in every army list i field... Most of the time normal space marines have their heads shaved or have no facial hair, might mess with their helmets. But since they are space wolves they way to show rank is to have long hair and facial hair with some grey in it. Because jump pack blood claws cost so much until the new codex comes out they aren't really that cost effective. Would rather have almost 2 squads than 1 that can move more and has melta bombs. JEFF4i
I don't know, I think Long Fangs, Wolf Guards, all that wouldn't be into it, but...am I the only one here that sees some particularly crazy (which is something for a Legion described as clinically insane to begin with) blood claws strapping that pack on, picking up the axe, and going to town? Personally don't have any made, but I'm starting to think I should.
