Another card Titan...

Inspired by BulldogUK and all the other efforts, I thought I'd have a go myself & this is what I've come up with:

This is my first attempt at card building so I'm happy with how it's going I'm just onto the detailing now.

I'm pleased with the plasma blast gun. I had to modify the template as it wasn't quite right & I made the ribbed part out of plasticard, which works well. I may try the whole thing from plasticard next time for greater rigidity.

I also like the vulcan mega bolter - my local model shop had the plastic tube I used for the barrels in their remnants bin for 50p. Next time I'd modify the bolter to make the front more barrel shaped.

I'm not so keen on the pistons I've used - they're just plastic drinking straws so I could do better with them.

I like the Imperial Eagles I've put on - they're from Forge World & do make a big difference.

I've glued it to a foam card stand for greater rigidity.

Now all that needs doing is more bolts and rivets, then paint. I know painting would probably be easier in sectionsbefore final assembly, another thought for next time.

Total cost including the Forgeworld eagles has been somewhere around £16, but with plenty of bits left for the next one...

Comments always welcome.

Looks real good. Sounds like you know where you could improve which is half of the battle. I just completed my fourth mod project and every time I do a better job. I look back at my first two and think "Holy crap I can't believe I was proud of those..."

I tried working with heavy stock paper and didn't like it that much. I do most of my work with plastic card and stock, super glue, and green stuff. This is my last project that I just completed (well, about 90%...needs more paint work): Cerberus And here is my next project that I actually just started on last night: Bulldog Titan

Have fun and don't be afraid to move on to larger and better projects. Seems like you did an excellent job on your first attempt. I look forward to seeing what you can come up with next time around!

Plastruct and evergreen make plastic tubes that telescope, just take a ruler and measure the circles on the templates, then buy the correct size ones. One of the template sites on yahoo groups has plasticard imperial eagle templates as well.

But aside from those suggestions, it looks really good. I look forward to seeing the one maid entirely out of plasticard. Can we have a more detailed plasma blastgun tutorial?

Thanks for all the positive comments. I'll certainly put a detailed tutorial for the plasma blastgun when I do my next titan. The next job will certainly be in plasticard - I just don't think the card I've been using is thick enough.

I also will think more carefully about bracing the legs, again, now the titan has been together for a while, I'm somewhat concerned for the strength. Any advice about thickness of plasticard or construction techniques would be VERY gratefully received.

What I do, and you can see it in my cerberus project log I linked you earlier, is to build a frame and then card over top. I use 1/8" square ABS tube from Plastruct to make the frame. I use some other random sizes as well for things that will be seen and need to be different sizes. Once I am done with the frame I cover that in plastic card. I use .040" (1mm) Plastruct Sheets. They can still be cut very easily with an exacto but it remains sturdy enough to add rigidity to the framework. I have never had any problems with any of the scratch work I have done that way to have any problems for staying together. I used to use Balsa for the framework and found it difficult to work with and a pain to cut to size. Heck, I have even used chunks of old sprue to build framework when I was in a pinch.

I'm sure there are other, and probably easier, ways of doing what you are asking but that is what I have found to be easy for me to work with. The other thing to remember is that when you do plastic card you will need to do a lot of using green stuff to fill in cracks between the pieces. I have found it best to do this as you go sometimes. It helps so that you can sand and smooth down any rough seems before you get to a point where you can't. If you have any questions feel free to ask. The other great thing to do is to just browse here on the PCA forums and see what other people have done and get some ideas from there.
