My Chapter has an unusual willingness to accept those of an less than typical bent as long as they follow the same strict doctrine of belief and battlefield deployment, thanks to a combination of my take on the Salamders' ethics, a catastrophic event in their history which left behind a greater than normal proportion of auxiliary forces (Librarians, Chaplains, Techmarines, etc.) to rank and file Battle Brothers, and the unlucky reality of their currently low manpower. While I'd written this into their fluff and have tried to do my best to reflect these attitudes in army lists that I've been drawing up, a new thought occurred to me while I was on the road today.

It's entirely legal to field a counts-as Character to lead your force, and it's entirely legal to deploy allied forces as long as you follow the rules as they're written within the codices. However, I'm finding myself considering the possibility of combining the two and having the closest thing to a legal IA-specific unit that I can come up without homebrewing the rules.

Given the enormous prominence of the Librarium and Reclusiam within the Exonerators and the relative difference in experience between the remaining veteran forces, I'm finding the idea of using Grey Knights rules to reflect a psychically-trained and unusually blessed cadre of veterans within the army itself to be more than a little appealing. For reasons of fluff, I wouldn't ever take more than a handful of them and they'd be limited in the equipment that I would make use of, since they're not Ordo Malleus and won't have access to nearly as much in the way of blessed wargear and extra training. The special rules just seem to suit a small, elite strike team that would support the main body in times of crisis, though the deamon-affecting rules at the end of the page would need a little justification.

The combined veneration of learning, smithing, and esoteric manifestations of the Emperor's Will could be used jointly to explain where the unusually powerful armor and weapons come from, a sort of highly-blessed refinement on standard Marine doctrine and armament. These would exist in infitesimal numbers and be as highly prized as the psychic hoods and force weapons of true Librarians, but be issued to those who have served with honor in both the Reclusiam and the Librarium without yet earning a place in the hierarchy. The Lightbringers would always be deployed in small squads as spearhead shock troops, led by the most senior candidate within the Librarium, and sent to the places where the worst conflict is expected to take place.

Fluffwise, they wouldn't measure up to a Grey Knight in individual combat. Rules-wise, it's the only way I can see to carry out this idea.

Also, I'm practically coming up with the details as I write, so I'd appreciate it if anyone can see a glaring hole that I would need to plug on the justifications.

I had the same idea, but was going to call them Sigillites, after the emperor's trusted aid Malcador.

I wanted to build and field a Grey Knight allied army/contingent, but did not want them to be "grey Knights" as such, just use their awesome rules!

I say go for it!!!

the Pedro Kantor model would make a great justicar, just have to cover up or file off all of the CF symbols.

More than that, you have to find some way to hide the Power Fist. Justicars cannot take weapons from the Armoury.

I wasn't particularly expecting any more response to this after it got moved, but I guess I'll take what I can get.

True, he definitely has the stormbolter aspect down and his pose is nice. I'd probably find myself with an urge to convert him if I went that way, though.

He's right.

The specific rule is in the lasst line of the paragraphs above the Armoury charts on page 16 of the Daemonhunters Codex. I think it's a bit silly, but it's there.
