Castlerook
The last few weeks I've been building up a Dark Angels Company, and its about 3/4 of the way complete. Which has got me thinking about future projects, in the end I decided on smaller warbands (I've built up four large armies over the years, and though their fun, they are limiting in what you can really do with them in terms of conversion style). So, after drawing up a small list of Chapters, ranging from minor chapters to lesser known chapters to a couple of DIY chapters, I decided to make a couple of concept marines. Now, these are only prototypes, any ideas used here may be dropped later, or improved on, they do not represent the final models. The blades on the elbows will be replaced with either plasticard or greenstuff, and possibly a small fin will be added to the helmet. These marines are only experiments in simple techniques, though any comments will be apprieciated. KfS
If my memory serves me correctly, there is a chapter called the Black Dragons that grow bone spikes/blades out of their forehead and elbows, very much like the first marine you've modeled. The Black Dragons were detailed in Chapter Approved I believe. Castlerook
I was thinking that, and will probably do them like that. Like I said, these guys are only prototypes and a lot can change about them. Bigger-than-Jesus
For the hoplite army, in the modelling section of the Librarium there's a tutorial for helmet crests you might be interested in Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/155890-space-marine-concepts/#findComment-1821902 Share on other sites
Mal
The greek hopolite is traditionall an ultra fetish. The first mini is looking really dynamic, and the second isn't too bad either, but the horse hair on his helmet makes him look like an ultra commander. Castlerook
For the Hoplite, I was actually thinking Imperial Fist Successor, and not because of the Phalanx spacecraft. You look at ancient Greek History, especially in the Peloponnesian War, all the City States used many different types of warfare, from battles on open planes to siegecraft to naval battles, the latter two are hallmarks of the Imperial Fists. And regards the crest, I'm not that good with greenstuff, the plasticard was an experiment to see how easy it would be to mass produce the crests. Anyway, like I've said, these are only ideas at the moment, so your comments are extremely useful. Mal
One thing to note, if your looking for a basis in the Peloponnesian Wars then remember that while the city states has different types of warfare their troops were ALL hopolites, even spartans had regular hopolites (they just had better superior hopolites) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/155890-space-marine-concepts/#findComment-1822036 Share on other sites
Castlerook
Of course your right about the hoplites, they were the most common warriors in all of Greece, and probably amongst the most heavily armoured the ancient world at that time. I'd also like to state this right now, that the Hoplite marines while may look like Spartans and other city states, they will NOT be based on 300, its not that I hate the film, in fact I quite like it, its just that as a film it has taken liberties and doesn't really represent a lot of what the Ancient Greeks were. There is a wealth of information that is virtually untapped, and its a shame to let it go to waste. I might as well just mention some other ideas about the other Chapters/Renegade Warbands I'm thinking about (Ranging from small patrols 500-750pts to normal sized detachments, 1500pts) Rainbow Warriors - Central American, possibly pelts and lizardmen weapons to denote rank and power weapons/elites. Scythes of the Emperor - Very small army/Extermination Patrol, replace some armor with Tyranid chitin, possibly use scything claws as swords. The Purge - Viral/Biological monstrosities, very grisly. Units looking like their the warbands' "mop up" teams, hunting survivors. Those three are still in the planning stages, so ideas are still very basic.
