Apocalyptic Dark Angel Log

Recommended Posts

I have been lurking through Warseer for quite some time now. In fact, I have been in 40k for about a two and a half years. Unfortunately, I've had very frequent dry spells, where I have found reasons not to paint. Personally, I find it very hard to play, with unpainted marines. I hope that starting a log will not only keep me motivated, but keep others motivated as well. I don't expect this log to be as fast moving, or as ornate as others, but I want it to serve its purpose.

Now, "why Dark Angels?" you might ask. Well, about three years ago, a friend introduced me to 40k. I was lured into the beast that is vanilla marines. For half a year, I debated the color scheme. I debated a name. I debated a background. After collecting about 1,000pts in random space marine armies, I realized the one chapter that I wanted was right in front of me. The First, and only, Dark Angels. Upon reading the codex, I fell in love with the models, the history, and everything about them. The concept of three different army types (Ravenwing, Deathwing, and Greenwing) was all that i needed. I started by simulating Dark Angels using my old marines, but I couldn't get into it. I realized that I needed true Dark Angels to fight as the Unforgiven.

So, here I stand today, with a few squads half painted. Multiple tanks half put together. I haven't been to my local store, which is not a GW store, in a while, due to work, and school. Because of this, my motivation has disappeared. I am looking forward to starting anew. From here forward, I promise to make progress. I promise to stop making excuses.

With all that out of the way, lets get to the meaty stuff.

What I've had previously and still have--- (meaning it will take a very long time to take apart, and repaint.)

-1 Assault Termy squad

-1 Tac Squad

-1 Command Squad

What I've bought---

-1 tac. Squad

-2 5-man vet squads

-1 ravenwing squad

-1 Armoured Spearhead

-1 Linebreaker Squadron

-2 Deathwing Squads

-Many robed marines

-Necron Battleforce (To take my mind off of green, bone, and black)

- aannnnndddd *drumroll* a newly purchased Battle Company that should have arrived today. Due to the holidays it might not arrive until tomorrow or *gasp* Friday.

I'll try and have pics up tomorrow of what I have. And, If anyone knows of some tips to deal with the shell shock of opening a battle company please tell. btw this would bring my force at ~8,000pts. Wish me luck!

P.S. Happy New Year's, and here's to all those New Year painting resolutions!!

I want cookie! A challenge has been place before me, so I must accept. This could get interesting. Wait til you see how much I haven't done.

Ok ladies and gentlemen, the new year is finally upon us. And with the new year, I have my first update. So, about last month, I was at work, and my manager decided we didn't need a display case. Guess who snagged it? Yup, i did. Some of the glass is damaged, but you can't beat free.

Old Stuff - or rather what i could find of them. Barely worth the picture. they've got about three layers of paint, and are crappily put together. Anyways, here they are.

Tac Squad 1 - out of all of my marines, I think I did the best on the ML marine. Hope you agree.

Dev Squad - This is the squad with the most amount of progress done, which is still, not a lot. Personally, I think the robes go well with the heavy weapons.

Deathwing - All I've got to so say is: Painting bone is a major pain.

Best one so far

Ravenwing - not too much progress unfortunately

The infamous land speeder. Not together.

Tanks - gotta love em

Armoured Spearhead

Originally, I thought painting a DW LR would be easier this way. Still a pain.

Linebreaker - I'm debating about putting huge caution stripes on the dozer of the one vindicator. Thoughts?

Other odds and ends

Ezekiel and Jump Chaplain

These were old, but I was able to strip them. once sword brethren, these marines are now under the First.

I've decided that since i'm getting so many tac squads with the battle company, I might as well convert one, so here are two bolter marines that are part of said squad.

So, thats what i've got. The battle company still hasn't come in but what can you do. Not much painting to comment on, but C&C are welcome.

Looks like your on the right track, clean crisp painting. It can be hard to keep the motivation to paint when swamped with so much plastic, i've been working through my project back log since seventh grade. Seems you've got a good grasp on painting, should try and dabble with high lights and shades. Just remember to keep your paints real thin and work slowly. cheers.

Thanks for the comments guys.

@ MFV - yeah, i think more definite highlights are the next step. Its something that I want to have down pat before I start painting the battle company.

@ Fire Harte - I've thought of using an air brush, but there isn't much money in the budget. I know you might think I'm crazy saying there's no room for an air brush with all the plastic i've got, but its true. I'm also in the process of saving for college. :D

@ Sons of Horus - Me neither. This should be fun putting all these marines together.

On a different note, I got a call from my local store. They've got my Battle Company :) . Unfortunately, I've been forced to take a surprise trip to central PA to visit family, so I won't be back to work on it till mid Saturday. So, on a 3 hour drive both ways, it'll be me, my rulebook, and my codex. Also, I entered the Librarium painting challenge, hoping to complete two tac squads and two rhinos by feb. 28th. If I can't do that, then I will be stuck looking at plastic much longer than I thought.

  • 4 weeks later...

Ahhhhhhh! its been so long. I haven't been holding up my end of the bargain. its been nearly a month and i haven't posted ANYTHING. This will change today. in the meantime, I have put together almost a whole battle company, with the help of some miniatures i had before. From the box, i still have 5 rhinos, one razorback, half a command squad, and 40 tac marines. surprisingly, the large amounts of plastic have not upset my brain too much. without further ado:

The first four squads are tac squads, and the last one is a partial dev squad. I'm still debating which medium weapons to take in the tac squads.

http://i295.photobucket.com/albums/mm157/mtblock/army_1_27_09.jpg

once again, the front four are tac, and the last one is dev. this dev squad is full however.

my two 10-man assault squads. These models are awesome. unfortunately i got a little too into it, and put on the backpacks before paintng. whoops. they'll just be a pain to paint.

http://i295.photobucket.com/albums/mm157/mtblock/Rhinos_1_27_09.jpg

my rhinos so far. 5 more to go.

http://i295.photobucket.com/albums/mm157/mtblock/asssgt_1_27_09.jpg

the sergeant to one of the assault squads. he's just awesome looking. i also decided that i would use only beaky helmets for the assault squads. thoughts. i used the DA upgraded beaky for the sergeants.

This is my apothecary. love the helmet.

My deathwing standard bearer. my free hand is horrendous, but i'll try.

The deathwing apothecary is on the way...
