ferrum proeliator
I've been perusing the chaos codex and as far as I can see, there is no outlined rules about chaos lords taking retinues. Now, as a keen gamer, taking a retinue for my leaders is a no brainer - I mean in my last game, my daemon prince got annihilated by Orks - yus - freaking orks, as he attracted so much attention - being bigger than everyone else. I'm getting a warsmith tomorrow hopefully, and without a retinue I see him being crushed by attacks, so here's my question - what do the rules outline about taking a retinue, what units should I take (I was thinking 5 chosen) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/156332-retinues/ Share on other sites

MuGGzy
I would say that most people just use Chosen AS a retinue. Chosen can pretty much do anything depending on gear so it's wide open to take 5 chosen and CALL them his retinue and gear them however you want. minigun762
Bad News: We don't get a specific Retinue so we can't use those fancy "Upgrade Character" rules. It would be nice because a Power Fist Warsmith seems fun. Good News: Chosen, Havocks (or even Possessed) work for a Power Armor bodyguard unit. Terminators make for a solid bodyguard unit if you take Terminator Armor. Hell you can always throw him into your basic CSM or Cult unit squad for protection. TheDarkApostle
Not sure:C:SW? They get the wolves, but are they a retinue? They do, and they can still take an actual bodyguard retinue in the form of Wolf Guards like our old Chosen. Rain
The concept of retinues is slowly being phased out and replaced with IC's attached to any squad you feel like attaching them to Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/156332-retinues/#findComment-1827661 Share on other sites
Playa
Hey, The concept of retinues is slowly being phased out and replaced with IC's attached to any squad Since v3, it's been better to join a CSM IC to a Unit of Vets than to spend the same points on a Retinue - Retinues remove the character's IC status, but allow them to be protected from Attacks by their "bodyguard". Joining them to a Vet squad protects them from enemy fire, but they still have to pile-in first during CC reactions. The upside is that, retaining IC status, they are free to leave/ join friendly Units at will. "Leapfrogging" from one Unit to another is a good way to get an IC just where you want it. Note that this is an option, and dedicating an Elite Unit to Character Meatshield duty is another. Your call. How is it better to be joined to a squad? You regain IC status when your retinue dies remember.
