Blood Angels (WIP)

Kudos to those who painted Imperial Fist, all I seem to do looks like trash. So gave myself a bit, and came back to it today.

The decision to do Blood Angels came because they're a quirky army... and I have a craptonne of assault marines laying around.

So here's some pics:

Critiques on the test marine would be great.

PS, yes its got the sheen of a freshly polished bowling ball, there's an incoming Matte Finish spraycan as I post this.

Progress and Posing

First attempt at a non airbrushed banner. Its pretty boring.

10 down 25 more to go.

Honestly the camera makes them look like garbage... or I have a really bad gauge of how poorly I paint.

I should get more natural light for the next pictures

I actually LIKE the shine. It's all glisteny and blood-like. In character. I don't normally like bright red on models, my own blood angels (when I get round to them) will be a rather dark red, but this gloss actually fits the background IMHO. Consider keeping it.

On another note, I thought the new washes were formulated so that there wouldnt be a gloss?

Yeah I have a can of dullcoat, but havent used it yet.

Yeah, they're not supposed to shine, but I can post you a " before and after " of a non washed, to washed model.

Honestly, they're not as shiny in person, I do use some polish for the shoulders to add some strength to the decals but that's about it.

I'll post my army list tonight. Mainly its 1000pt but heres the rough version.

Lemartes (Not the actual model, but a counts as. Not a fan of his model)

7x Death Co (JPs)

10x Assault Marines (JPs)

10x Tac Squad (Melta) + Rhino

5x Tac Squad (Melta) + Rhino

I don't think its overly competitive at all, but its something more appealing to opponents then a tooled up Nidzilla list. I haven't really looked seriously at making BA a tournament styled army, and if I did, I'd probably use the new codex over the BA codex.

I like them. I almost painted Blood Angels. It was between them and Imperial Fists. The thing about taking photos I've found is trickier than you might think. Yes a photo will show all your flaws, but can be a good thing to help you improve. If your camera has auto focusing, use it.

Overall I like them. If they don't look shiny in person I would not worry about that much.

Great job.

I tried doing Fist. The yellow I had did NOT like the airbrush, so I gave up on them. On a whim, I tried blood red. It took instantly, and I haven't looked back. I've always liked BA, and have always enjoyed playing fast armies vs mech / heavy oriented armies.

I'll enjoy doing the Rhino with the brush, I'm working on a BA stencil for doing the top panels with a custom decal.

Kudo's to anyone who paints Fist, all the respect to you, but it just didn't work with the brush at all, and turned out worse looking then I could have imagined.

Testors Dullcote = 100% win, took the shine right off them, and never snowflecked them at all.

Beaker, or Regular Helmet for the heavy bolter *eventually both, but just can't decide which goes first*

Beakies FTW!

I really dig the Sergeant's banner, but all around good job. Nice even coat with your red. That Baal Red Wash is something, isn't it?

This week, build 20 Assault Guys to painting standard, and get them primered.

Critiques welcome as long as its constructive.

20 Assault Marines

10 Tac Marines (Heavy Bolter)

Once these are complete, I'll reward myself by putting together and painting my vindicators.

Basecoated with an airbrush, took about half a bottle of Blood Red.

After that, a heavily converted Corbulo to even out my 1000pt army on the way to 1750.

I like them shinny! The Blood Angels books all tell us that they are a little bit vain when it comes to artistic and militaristic ventures. Why wouldn't thier armor be polished to a high sheen? They aren't afraid of the enemy seeing them are they? :( Now if they were on campaign for some weeks, I would expect thier armor and vehicles to be a bit dirty and not shinny. But just arriving from a drop pod from thier strike cruiser---shinny armor!

Sorry to hear that you decided against the Fists, but the Blood Angels were at the Seige of Terra and bled with us Fists and thusly, we Fists wear our Aquilas Blood Red to honor the fallen Sanguininus (sp?) and his sons so we can't fault you there.

By the way, great painting so far. They look great. Look forward to seeing your Corbulo conversion.

Their good, better then I can paint. ALittle shiny but that could be the camera or a trick of the light or be fixed with dull coat.

Never heard of washes giving shinyness like that before.

Come on, I've seen you paint recently. Your painting is improving rapidly. At your age my stuff looked worse.

Anyway. great stuff so far. I like the big logo on the rhino. Very cool. I just have one problem: You need to give them the black shoulder pads. It doesn't take much time, and makes the BA look way better IMO. The shiny clean armour is the way I go as well, and it's fine. If that's the GW sealer, it will dull after a little handling which should get it to the right level of sheen. The only other thing I could say is that your marines are a little plain. You need to give them a bit more personallity. And yes people, airbrushing IS the way to go. Everything is much smoother in the end, and two coats are all you need with GW paints. Keep going.

Really?!

That's awesome, I didn't know that!

I may try some black shoulder pads, I just personally like the solid colour a bit more. Anyway, I got a lot of painting ahead of me. I promise that the Vindicators will be a lesson in vanity... I hope.
