Assaulting Existing CC

Say the models are arranged like so:

A = space marines

x = hormagaunts

W = tyranid warriors

W W W W W

A A A A A A

The gaunts have assaulted the marines this turn. The warriors also wish to assault. Can the warriors join the combat even though they cannot reach any space marine bases?

The relevant rules are found on pages 11 and 34. 34 Says that assault moves are done exactly the same as in the Movement phase. Flip back to pg 11 and we see that "Once you have started moving a unit, you must finish its move before you start to move another unit." Meaning exactly as JamesI said, the hormagaunts went first and plugged up the assault, so the warriors got hosed. I just explained the why ;).

Hey,

it was a friendly game I didn't want to raise too much a stink

If your opponent paid for Leaping Warriors, it's just as well . . .

If the Gaunts hadn't completely enveloped the Marines, LWs could have still gotten into b2b.

Failing that, they could use their Assault move to close ranks with the Gaunts if just one Warrior could get within 3in of a Marine.

No, if no model of the unit can contact an enemy model, the assualt is not successful and no model makes an assault move at all. Being within 3" of an enemy model would not help either. If no combat has been initiatied by the unit then they cannot make any attacks.
