Induction: Dual Inquisitor Lords / Assassins

Recommended Posts

Requsting some "sage" input from the esteemed Grand Masters of the Ordo...

Ever since I started playing 2 years ago I loved the whole look and feel of both Ordos. I had to pick one, and ended up starting DH with the intention to slowly induct WH as I finished DH. Currently I induct a unit of seraphim from time to time to enhance the DH anti-tank, and am working up a model of Saint Celestine for Apoc games.

As I was musing over the next step in the induction process, I wondered the legality of inducting both a WH =][= Lord and a DH =][= Lord. It appears to be a legitimate option for several reasons:

  • Codex entries are different: "Ordo Malleus Inquisitor Lord" and "Ordo Hereticus Inquisitor Lord" respectively

  • Both armies allow "0-1 HQ" to be inducted from the other list

  • The entry for assasins seems to support this fact in the FAQ regarding using multiple assasins. Quote:

Witch Hunters and Daemonhunters are discrete types of Inquisitor.
The Officio Assassinorum Operative or Deathcult Assassin may only be taken in an army that has an Inquisitor from the same Codex.

In the same breath, this now raises the question about taking 2 assasins...IF you can take 2 =][= Lords then you have the elite induction slot open. Also the fact that the inquisitors are discreet and the assasins "may only be taken in an army that has an Inquisitor from the same Codex". However it is not as clear as the codex quote is "no more than one Officio Assasinorum can be used in any force for any reason" is the same for both DH and WH and seems to imply the OA is exclusive across both codicies...

Anxious to hear everyone's thoughts on both.

That's your answer right there. RAW and RAI. No more than one...in any force for any reason.

Oh sure, you can have both Lords in an army, but there's only one Temple Assassin in an army outside of Apocalypse.

However, in order to have both Lords, you need either a WH or DH base army. You can't do it in an IG or SM base army, because they have to take a mandatory HQ (and you're only allowed 2 HQ choices).

I've had a similar situation come up in a 2v2 game. Both my opponents had Inquisition allies and an assassin each. I let it go for that game, as they were both using Vindicare's and did very little damage. Actually, I don't remember them killing a single model. Although my opponents are foolish friends of mine and often forgot they were there....

My opinion is that there should only ever be one assassin per side in standard 40k games, regardless of allies, teams etc.

I agree with the above... there can be up to 1 Inquisitor Lord per Ordo in the same army, limited by normal Force Organization charts... there can only EVER be one Temple Assassin.. however you can have multiple entries of Death Cult Assassins, as per regular Force Organization charts. Specifically disallowed by RAW and RAI is two Inquisitor Lords, and two Temple Assassins (of any affiliation among the 4 temples).
