Raven Guard combat squad

Recommended Posts

So, I have been through a lot of schemes and I could never stay with it. I finally decided to do an army with an easy scheme that I like the fluff for: Raven Guard. This is my test model that is as of yet not finished (have to clean up the highlights and do the eyes). Hope you enjoy. (by the way you probably cant see the highlights in the photos, any tips on making my pics better?)

As I said he's not done yet.

Thanks Master Kashnizel

PS: Do NOT focus on the shoulder pad trim. Yes I know it doesn't go with the fluff, I don't care.

I just have to say it, for a Tactical marine the shoulder pad should be green trim.

That said is the red supposed to represent 3rd Company?

Anyway no the highlights aren't evident but get some contrasting colors in there, metalics on the bolter, lenses and so forth and it will probably bring out the black armor better.

As I said in my post, I know about the trim. It isn't supposed to signify any company I just added it to give the model some colour. I will put some more contrasting colours in soon and I will work on the highlights to make them more evident.

So if the trim doesn't signify anything... why is it there? If it's the Raven Guard fluff that drew you to the army, why use just a random trim color?

I like the fluff as in backstory, I think I should be able to decide to tweak the scheme slightly. You aren't being very helpful so please stop focusing on the shoulder trim, I think I said something along those lines in my original post.

Just curious, no need to get touchy dude, like I said before chill. I never said you couldn't do whatever you want or that it was bad, just was curious as to the why. So sue me, sheesh.

on how to make him better... depends on what your usin him as. If hes just gonna be a tacty, then maybe give a chapter symbol, and thats it... if hes a veteran, he might need a white helmet, white trimming and maybe some tooling-up, like a tabard. If hes just a test run however, not meant for gaming or anything really, just to see how they look, go crazy!!!! well, give him a tabard, grenades, maybe a wreath on his head? gun sights and other funky stuff, just generally make him awesome!

prophet out

I know sorry I'm over reacting but I'm just trying to avoid an argument. Other then that is there anything else I can do to make him look better?

Well it depends, I find solid armor can be effectively broken up with some extra details. Scrollwork in thinned white paint, or a campaign/crusade badge or two. Squad numbers, company numbers, those can go on leg plates or knees. Or even Company Heraldry. A upper right to lower left diagonal slash is the 3rd Company's heraldry for instance, kill tallies and so forth. They can all be used to add detail and character to a model veteran or no, every marine is a hero and deserves some extra details here and there if you wish.

You can also tell a story with markings to an extent. Maybe you fought a game or campaign alongside a Crimson Fists player, and so all your squads that fought in CC alongside Crimson Fists painted their left gauntlet dark red in honor of their brother astartes. Maybe a particular battle brother took down a Daemon Prince with his bolter and so he earned a marksman's honor, a small gold bolter shell painted on the gun casing or on the knee or something can represent that honor and so on and so forth. Such details add depth and character to the models in addition to their base scheme and make for great conversation pieces.

Here are some updated pics. I added the fifth company symbol and a tac symbol. I hope the highlights are more apparent. Enjoy!

Tell me if there is anything I should work on. I've also started painting my second marine, he should be done in a day or two.

Thanks,

Master Kashnizel

PS: I have a reason for the red pad trim, it is the marking from a campaign the fifth company went on with the Blood Ravens and another chapter which I have yet to name.

I just re-read the Insignium Astartes book.. In there it shows a ravenguard tactical marine with black trim, company designation is on the left knee shown as a number.

So that tells me you should feel free to paint your shoulder rims however you like, and you aren't "breaking fluff".

I hadn't noticed that before, however Insignium Astartes is a Black Library publication and therefore non-canon I'm afraid, while it's a highly usefull guide and tells us a lot about the Codex Astartes that is not written anywhere else, I don't a single image in it outweighs the Raven Guard IA. But the OP did say he didn't want an argument hehe.

Anyway the highlighting is more visible now and I like the company number on the left leg, looks good. Though I can't see if you've done anything with the bolter yet... have you?

I would use some boltgun metal on the bolter and maybe some part of the backpack as a minimum. highlighting is getting there, all in all a very good first attempt! do what you wish with the company and squad markings - breaking with fluff is OK, but it is there for you when you get stuck, too. I try to keep same-squad markings consistent for a number of in-game reasons...

keep it up!

If you click the first thumbnail you will see three small markings on his bolter. The bolter is painted boltgun metal but the outer casing is painted codex grey. As of yesterday I have based him and I will clean up the highlights one more time along with any other detail I think needs a little work. I've also started highlighting my second marine and he seems to be coming along well.

Thanks

Master Kashnizel

Update: My second marine is finished and based. Both marines will be getting *a little* work done to there highlights to make them thinner because now the highlights are a little to apparent. I'll be adding pictures when my camera charges.

Alright my second marine is done. I've highlighted the lenses to make it seem more realistic. I have yet to touch up the highlights. I will start work on the third marine today. Below you will also see the remainder of my combat squad and you will see my *truescale* captain with a combi flamer and power weapon. Enjoy!
