I made a reversible gaming table

SO I finally made a gaming board for myself. I dont have pictures yet but will get some up soon. I just wanted to share the idea that I had when I made it. Basically, it is a reversible gaming board. It is a 8' x 4' sheet of plywood. I left it 8 feet long.

I got some molding type strips of wood and ran it around the length of the sheet of plywood, mitering the corners so it looks nice. I got the strips a bit wider then the plywood, so there would be a lip about .5 inches, maybe a bit less, sticking up on both sides of the plywood.

Then, to get the table to regulation size I bought some thinner hardboard and some more molding and made two 1' wide by 4' long tray that sit on either end of the 8' table, held in place by the molding around the table. This reduces the gaming area to 6'. If you want a 4' x 4' table just slide the trays in until your widht is 4'. I added some dividers inside the trays. The trays are good areas to gather your troops, put dead troops, roll dice, hold templates, rulebooks, stuff like that, just to keep the clutter off the board.

So, the reversible part is that since the lip around the edge of the table sticks up on both sides of the plywood, the table can be flipped over and the trays placed on the reverse side. One side of my table is flocked with grass and sand for a rural look, the other is going to get the urban treatment with greys and blacks.

Oh, and I sit the plywood on a 6' long folding table I got from costco. SO, it is truning out pretty good, I painted the trim and the trays gloss black, and am going to line the trays with some red velvet, should look pretty sharp. I will get some pictures up this weekend if anyone is interested.

ADDITION:

OK we here are the pics I promised.

This is the table as a whole. It just sits on a 6' long folding table from Costco.

Here is one of the two trays. They are each a foot wide so with one on either end it turns the 8' table into a 6 ' table. If you want a 4x4 table then just move them in. The sit inside the lip of the table edge. If you wanted an 8 foot table just remove the trays.

here is the tray removed. the ilp that holds it in is the same on the other side of the board, so just flip the board over and place the tray in the same way.

I like the idea of the trays...will have to look into that.. thanks for posting!

We pass around the box of death/doom which is currently the box top from Assault on Black Reach. All dice rolls are in the box (keeps dice off the table) which is especially helpful when fighting ork hoards (lots of dice!).

The tray idea would help my boxes last longer, and keep the reserves, and dead separated!

How are you going to keep the flocking on when you flip the table over?

Looking forward to the pics.

I used a spray adhesive to stick the flock/sand on the rural side. I let it sit overnight then sprayed a light coat over it all again and let it sit again. I have turned it over and the flock stayed. I plan on having a brace system to sit on the rails when I flip it over though so the flock doesnt sit on the table that the board sits on and rub it off.

Under all of that though I spraypainted the board with browns and black and some textured grey paits.

make sure it's refrigarated beverage holders, commanders need a cool drink during heat of battle :D

Thats what I was thinking. Just get a Styrofoam Igloo ice chest, and integrate it into the terrain. =-D Unpassable mountain? =-D

Looks really good, but did you flip it in the pictures? It looks the same.

Hail frater,

I am well liking what I see. A job very well done. Had I space like it seems you do, I would definitely start a similar project myself.

Very well done. Looking forward to seeing the reverse side of things.

Regards,

Master Ciaphas
