So I was thinking about starting a new DIY SM chapter, and I really love the AM iconography ... this lead me naturally to the Iron Hands.

Then I started reading up on them and ran across the one line (which I'll paraphrase here): "... it's know that the Iron Hands have a close relationship with the AM, what the AM gets out of this relationship is unknown however ..."

That got me thinking, what if the AM gets a tithe of the Iron Hands Gene-Seed and/or recruits into their own "chapter"? I was considering a chapter used by the AM in exploritory campaigns on known Necron Tomb worlds, where the power and invulnerbility of the the marines would be a great asset.

I don't think this would have to be a "hidden" chapter, in fact it could be just an offshoot of the Iron Hands, or a chapter designated by the Lords of Terra, but kept off the main books ... just like all other information regarding the Necrons.

So ... I know it smells a bit like cheese, but I'm hoping you'll think it's more like chedder than blue (and not UM blue!) ... ok, flame suit on, please let me know what you think of this basic idea to help me flesh it out or bury it!

an iron hands successor chapter that specializes in acquiring things (lightning raids, hulk storming, etc.) would be of great value to the admech.

they would even be of use to the iron hands.

as such you could keep them as straight iron hands that specialize in such tactics or roll with a successor chapter.

Unfortunately, there are plenty of std's everywhere. The STC's on the other hand are very rare and come few and far between. Another note. The Iron Hands don't talk to their spawned chapters once they become full fledged chapters. They're all reclusive.

Oh my god... That was sooo funny!

I had in mind to start IH when I started SM (with my warhound, reaver, banblades and such as Ad-mech support). The problem is the new codex, I find, gives little support. Apart from taking the Forgefather (a sub-par HQ) and more techmarines, it's hard to come up with a real "IH" feel". Shame, as that chapter has such a nice nice fluff..

You might perform a search for "Steel Confessors" here. The Steel Confessors are a Chapter the Adeptus Mechanicus created in secret, though they were later discovered. You'll find out more background information on them from the search results.

It sounds like a good enough idea, the only thing is that if you really look deep into the Ad Mech they would not be likely to use a SM Chapter. Yes, if the Steel Confessors thing is true fluff that might be one sole connection. See, the thing is that the Ad Mech and the Imperium, while working together, don't trust each other. You have factions of the Mech Cult that don't believe in the divinity of the Emperor and some that do. The ones that believe in a seperate Omnissiah literally tolerate the Imperium as nothing more than a treaty of war and want nothing to do with the use of Imperium vehicles or troops for that means.

The second thing to think about is the fact that the Ad Mech in no way trusts the flesh. This is shown by the Iron Hands and their use of augmetics and close relationship to the Ad Mech. They have adopted the same thing, if we can repair wounded with better parts we are going to do it. So if you were to do a chapter this needs to be shown in it. While they may use gene-seed to create these warriors they are going to augment and upgrade them from the flesh.

Thirdly, if you really look into it, some of the Ad Mech troop units are so dang fierce that they have no need for SM Chapters. The Ad Mech breeds and designs their warriors to be the biggest, baddest bastard child on that battlefield. And the thing is that if they were to put together a force to do that, they would do so with their own men. Invulnerability and speed of SM forces or not, the Mechanicus (in fluff) only trusts themselves really...they only tolerate the Imperium and what they do for them.

However, fluff aside, if you were wanting to play with the Ad Mech storyline I think that would be a good way to do it. However, if I may so suggest look up the Tempus Fugitives Cult Mechanicus Codex. Excellent work, and if you play with friends or something a very solid homebrew codex to use. My friends have all approved it over the old Huckleberry list. It is nice and easy to use, solid units and a lot of fun. It doesn't give you lots of fluff but it gives you what you need to play a sweet army. If you are thinking of investing in a force, and you're thinking of Mechanicus you need to look at that codex first to give you an idea of what they are capable of.

Have fun and happy gaming,
