Adeptus Mechanicus Costume

Mordus

Recommended Posts

Hiya everyone. Youll know me as Mordus. Im 14 and Ive hung around this board commenting for a while now, but rarely have I posted pictures of my work. Now that I do, its not my minis. Oh well....

Anyway, both for Games Day and other gatherings of Hobby nuts I have embarked on a mission to construct a high quality (hopefully) Ad Mech Tech Priest/Adept costume, using just cardboard, junk, paint and some LED lights.

I finished the Bionic Eye yesterday. It is measured to the dimensions of my face, and constructed from an old Cheerios packet, an ancient LED light, some spare defiler parts, two plastic bases and some straws. I then painted it as I would a mini, using tin bitz undercoat, highlight brazen brass, highlight dwarf bronze, wash chestnut ink, add scaly green and fortress grey verdigris effects. I also added a serial number in Chaos Black: 1XV.

Here are the photos. Apologies for quality and my finger covering detail, I have yet to find a way to fasten the damn thing to my face. Any suggestions?

With the LED light on. You push it in to activate.

NEXT UP: Mechanic hand replacement, needles etc.

NEEDED URGENTLY: Red robe with hood, large cardboard box for possible backpack.

even though i always stay very far away from things that have to do with costumes, i do have to comment you on your work battlebrother! That eyepiece looks great! The paintjob is real nice, and the effect is pretty creepy. Are you going to make a further mask to cover up your face (not something personal, but alot of adepts and protectors have metal plates, i find that very cool)?

Thanks for your kind words brother Free Spirit!

I didnt have any plans for otehr facial additions...until you said that...A gas mask might be cool, could link to the backpack.

All sorts of ideas. thankfully its nine months to GD, so I have time to act out all of them! :P

you could probably get a cheapy gasmask in a local army surplus store, just add a vacuum hose or something. Hahaha while writing this something just came up. Why not have a small player, like a MD/MP3 player or w/ever and connect it to a small speaker and in your face plate. Then you'd have to record that old modem dial up sound and play it over the speaker now and then! (ahhhh im in a creative mood today!) Voxcast the message! Interface! :P

Genius. I gotta do that.

UPDATE: Finished building the glove, and its undercoated. Ready to be painted as soon as the paint dries.

In the meantime, Im coming up with some possible accessories, such as red-food coloured water in a de-labeled cut down coke bottle attached to makeuped "damaged" skin like a blood reservoir. Yeah....

My best friend is also getting in on the party...he will be going as AD mech Priest/Adept as well. My other friend might be coming as our servitor.

Gonna be sick. Stay tuned for some more pics when the hand is done, then a shot of me in both hand and eye.

Any ideas yet on how to strap to eye to my face? REALLY needed people!

thanks for reading this :)

I'd suggest making a rebreather unit out of the cheap dust masks. Add some paper mache to strengthen it, fashion some better srtaps than the elastic that comes with them and add appropiate details. A hose running from this to the backpack, and fasten your wonderful bionic eye to the face mask. I draw this inspiration from the face on the Ezekiel model.

Seconded NEMfx. I think my dad has one squirelled away somewhere....

Anyhoo, thanks for the suggestions. Still need a strap for the eye ><

Pix of the hand, now finished. Will do another with more gizmos for my other hand, more like a utility gauntlet.

It was based on a latex surgery glove found in a cupboard, as part of a pair. I stuck cardboard onto it, scoring it at the joints, then added paint and gizmos, mostly from the Chaos vehicle accessory sprue. Some straw "pipes" were also chucked in, and the paintjob is the same as on the eye. Nothing fancy here, its the OTHER hand that will be most awesome.

Enjoy ;) ;)

Liquid Latex applied to the underside of the 'eye' where it will attach to you and then pressed into place, given time to dry, will attach it fairly well. I would suggest maybe applying a stiff hair-band to the back-piece where it disappears under your hair so that the 'eye' has some purchase to stop it falling off under its own weight. PM me for more, I've worked with film prosthetics and "blood mixes" before.

UPDATE: Took a new pic of me with both eye and hand. I look rather odd in this piccy...cant quite put my finger on it. Maybe the stupid pose hehe...

Damn I look idiotic in this.

My spray has run out, so no more paintcoats till sunday after I get some more. Until then ill still work on some accessories, like blood tubes in machinery, whirring gizmos and maybe a laspistol based on a water pistol...

Yes, I have taken 40k a tad far haven't I

While Games Day is my deadline for this project, the costume itself will be used at other gatherings, games clubs etc. For instance, im going down to my local GW today for an Apoc game- ill be wearing the hand and eye.

You have a point there. I look about 6/7 in that picture. I think I have my finger on it- my face is creased up, making me look younger. Without wishing to brag, I do look really young for my age, some people seem to have some trouble distinguishing me from the year 5s at my school. Im in year 9 >< It drives me up the wall. For the record, in case you missed it at the top, im 14, 15 in Feb.

looks good so far but the eye piece, while very well done, looks like its not fitting round your nose right or is it because you weren't hold it right? Another note i should tell you, i hope you realise that if that 'eye' has no way for you to see kiss depth perception good bye. I had made a mask once for a cosplay for a friends birthday party (avatar has what the mask looked like, roughly) and for the entire time i had no depth perceptions nor any way of looking to my left effectively, so first off consider that. you could stop that by doing something adventurously interesting, make a periscope with two mirrors and fit that behind the eye and not only would it look more mechicusy (since those guys like having sensors poking out everywhere).

As for the glove I have to be frank here: Does not work. the moment i saw it I was unable to like it, however the idea for the hand may still go on but its gonna be somewhat hard to judge if it's going to work. you need to completely box in the fingers but leave joints and such by using some fabric thats strechy. Ditch the anttena on the index finger as not only is it impractical it looks daft. The other option is just leave your hand like it is and just paint it so it looks pale and maybe make some rings that give you a metal looking finger or two. As for the second hand i would advice a weapon arm or Just some Cables. I know adepts don't really have such but a few have one or two.

As for attaching the eye piece maybe making more facial wear to help put it on without hassle. Remember your gonna be wearing a hood so the top of your head and such aren't visible. A heavy piece like that would most like need straps to go round the front of your forehead, back of your head and maybe a over the top as well. consider getting one of those cheapy builder hard hats like from a toy store as they have the sort of thing i'm thinking off and they are normally adjustable. to hide the front strap will need one of two things: the hood to cover it or just add some 'plating' across it to look like a cranium upgrade.

hope that helps
