Fenrisian Terrain, Let's build some icy stuff.

Recommended Posts

First of, this is a thread where I need YOUR help, for something YOU will benefit from. Please read it all :)

As some of you might have noticed, I've been building and showing terrain over at the Easy Terrain Thread (which I, btw, recommend y'all to check out and contribute to, it's for everyone) and today, I said to myself, “This stuff is kind of popular Lando, this stuff is kinda appreciated, and actually, Lando, you like to build stuff””.

And then, after about five seconds of thinking, and the realisation that I was currently holding another of those Storm Claws I’ve been painting lately, I said to myself “Lando, why is it that you’ve yet to do ANY kind of fenrisian or snowy terrain for your wolves, the ones you’ve played for like 15 years and love like your own sons”.

And frankly, I couldn’t answer my own question xD

So, here it is, the big Fenrisian Terrain Thread. Sorry if you thought it was packed full of pics of fenrisian terrain, it isn’t (yet), but it will be, soon, with your help.

The thing is, the biggest problem I have with building terrain, is the inspiration. I can build almost anything from anything, and make it quite nice, but first, I have to come up with the idea, and although I’ve been playing Space Wolves for 15 years, got both codices, all the novels with wolves in them and the Lone Wolves comicbook, I don’t feel like I know anything about Fenris! I got some basics ideas of course, snow, icy, small villages on small islands and big dragon Viking-style boats on dangerous seas. Asaheim, the big stuff and place of the Gods, while the rest if feral and barbaric country. Huts, longhouses, bonfires and fishing as the main food source. That’s more or less what we got. But we’ve got our heads too, our interpretations of what Fenris looks like, mines mostly like these two ten-minutes concepts I did today:

http://img266.imageshack.us/img266/9995/icyseagh1.jpg

A picture of a frozen shore, where a long lost fenrisian ship sits forever frozen in the ice. Some of the old cargo’s reached the shore during summer, and has stayed there for some time.

http://img184.imageshack.us/img184/258/runestonesjh5.jpg

Just some rune stones. Since the fenrisian people look at the Space Wolves as Gods, and since Russ is their main God, I figured their rune stones should go around the theme wolves ;)

I’m also thinking about build a Kraken cadaver looking like the Kraken I did last year, some of you might’ve seen it, but for the rest, it’s here:

http://www.coolminiornot.com/205338

It’s all very simple. These two terrain pieces WILL be built, and they will be built soon. However, I really feel like building fenrisian terrain, actually, I’m thinking about doing a fenrisian table, just because it will be so damn cool xD

Meanwhile, I want you guys to start giving me tips about what I could build, anything from “A couple of fishing nets” to “ The gates of the Fang” will do, I won’t be able to build everything, but I will try to build most of it :) And then, I will post “How to”s and pictures of said terrain pieces in this thread, for y’all to see and copy :D

How about that, eh? Now, start writing about Fenris, from facts you’ve found or pure imagnination, as long as it’s Fenris it won’t matter.

And let’s be serious, y’all know how cool this will be when it’s done. Let's make this big stuff, let's make this a project that the other chapters will envy ;)

Some pictures that may help get you inspired..

And don't forget, Fenris isn't always a frozen death world. It all depends on how close or far away we are from the Eye of the Wolf (Sun) ^_^

Yeah I know, one easily forgets that, eh? xD But the terrain I intend to build is more or less based on what fenris looks like when it's further away from the wolf's eye :D

Thanks for the link! It's looking awesome, and I'll spend some time now going through it all to get the right feel. I'm surprised none other than you have answered, this is a funny project, me thinks, and I really need some advice to get me going :D

I think I'll might start building something today, and show it later. It might be one of the above shown stuff, or it might be something else.

As Arnold said; I'll be back.

Firstly your Kraken dioram was excellent, well painted and well sculpted.

The rune stones are agood idea, not sure about the wolf being painted head down first, use leman russ's own wolf symbol at least that way the wolf will be facing up rather than down.

Decide whether you want the sea to be part of your board, if yes then put a long ship in it or do the whole board as a frozen lake with a long ship in the middle.

Or do a forest with lots of pine trees and snow. with some Elk heards being chased by wolves, Hell you could even use that when gaming as the SW might run into the middle of the elk heard

Thanks for all your tip and links, I'll be sure to check it all out and think about it.

I tell you brothers, together we'll create magic in this thread. And here's the first taste of that magic, got me some WIP-pictures and explanations of the first Terrain piece, the frozen ship! Woo.

The frozen Ship

WIP-pictures and explanations, the first ones. I'll fill in as we go, brothers.

Right,

Step 1:

http://img93.imageshack.us/img93/2533/picture1pj4.jpg

The basics, this is more or less what I'll build this terrain piece of. What you see here is:

Carton, a big white piece, which I stole in the local garbage room.

A cut Corn Flakes package, usefull for fine details and smaller ground changes.

Wooden sticks I stole from McDonald's (I think you use them to stir the coffee)

Wooden sticks used for BBQ (the long ones), can be bough anywhere in Sweden, and surely where you live too.

A piece of textile from an old curtain.

Warhammer Fantasy Shields I dug out of my old WHFB box. You might be able to get these from eBay, if not, do something similar, shields can be made from cutting and pasting corn flakes package too, I've tried it, looks about as good from the normal battle field distance.

And, some glue. Any good glue will do, more or less.

The rocks are missing, yeh,.. first I though I’d make them from ordinary rocks, but then I though about how heavy that would be, and decided to use some foam instead, not pictured here but pictured later. Of course, you guys could use anything lookin’ like a rock. This is just recommendations.

Step 2

http://img243.imageshack.us/img243/5381/picture2nc5.jpg

Now I draw the basic guidelines on the carton, eg. where the ship'll be, and where the shore will be, and so on. I also mark out where there could be some rocks and some cargo, nothing special, just very basic. To know what’s what and what’s where.

Step 3

http://img211.imageshack.us/img211/5135/picture3wj3.jpg

After I made the guidelines, I cut a piece of carton that looks like the shore, and glue it to the main board, just to create some level differences between the ground, the shore and the soon-to-be-icy waters of Fenris. This is about 1/3 cm thick. I also fill the sides with PVA glue, since the inside of a carton usually is ugly looking on a terrain piece, and glue crates a more natural step from low ground to higher.

Step 4

http://img110.imageshack.us/img110/5082/picture4ib4.jpg

Next up is the basics of the boat. I cut some carton strips in the size I want the boat’s sides to be, and then cover them with the wooden sticks I stole from McDonald’s, as pointed out on the picture above, by my very own finger! :tu: Bending these sticks is usually easy, but if you break them, have no fear, the ship is a wreck, so it’s a good thing :) Do four of these, and four smaller for the front and back of the ship, as seen briefly in the next picture!

Step 5

http://img243.imageshack.us/img243/9305/picture5zj7.jpg

There it is! The basic look of the boat, as you can see, it’s tilted a bit to the side, looking like it was sinking once, before it froze into the sea, where’s it’s gonna stay for quite some time :P

If the boat get all f’scked up, don’t fear, it’ll look good anyway since it’s a wreck!

Also, don’t forget tom damage the hull if you intend to do that. I forgot about it. It’s not crucial, but I bet it’ll look awesome.

Step 6

http://img246.imageshack.us/img246/8369/picture6uh3.jpg

When the sides are done, start building the floor. This can take some time and be a bit frustrating, but have patience. The floor might fall if your glue’s crappy, so have some kind of support below, here I used some cut off toilet rolls. They worked perfectly, but if you find something better, use that.

Step 7

http://img140.imageshack.us/img140/4233/picture7mh7.jpg

And here’s the finished deck! I made a cargo hole in the middle, and some broken parts. I also made room for a side railing, and a mast in the middle.

Step 8

http://img140.imageshack.us/img140/1940/picture8vr4.jpg

With the boat partly done, and drying, I spread some wood in the frozen water. Different pieces, of different sizes, with different angles. Just don’t overdo it, remember, there’ can be more broken wood than there’s holes in the boat ;)

Put some on the shore too, to give the impression that they slowly made it to the shore during summer seasons, just to freeze again when the wolf’s eye went further away.

Step 9

While the rest of the piece I start building the mast and sail, and I DON’T attach these, since it’ll be easier to paint them first and then attach them. This is very simple. Four BBQ-sticks glue together, and a patch of textile cut like a wind torn sail.

Step 10

http://img66.imageshack.us/img66/9471/picture10jf7.jpg

I now add some rocks. This is ordinary blue foam from any house material store, all the Swedes out there can find these at beijer bygg. The reason to why they’re green is that this is some old necron monoliths I cut up, instead of use unused foam. Never liked that necron piece anyway, and my mate quit his army, so why sav ém? They’ll do as good as rocks on the planet of Russ :P

Later, I’ll paint these and flock them with sand.

And.. that concludes this post, as of now. This is what the piece looks like, and I’ll return with more WIPS in the next couple of days. Look forward to the finished product brothers, and of course, the 9 or so pieces to come 

http://www.gamefusionstudio.com/Terrain.html

Some paint schemes you may want to look at for reference, for rock formations and what not.

Looking forward to your work! your work has always been eye catching and amazing! I am sure you will make Russ proud! :)

Thanks Brother! I'll definately steal some of those stone formations for my Stone ring, "Temple" of Russ thingy I'm planning to build (no Norte dame here people, remember, they're barbarians  Something like stonehenge would fit better xD). I'll snow it all up and make it more wolfy, of course ;)

Gonna build some on the ship today.. I'll be back with more WIP pictures later.

You... You... You killed the Necron Monolith rock? I loved that thing!!! It was awesome!!! :) Noooooooooo!!!

Lol, I'm sure it'll do fine as a bunch of Fenrisian rocks though.

An idea for you. The caribou thing sounds cool, but it might be a little hard to pull off. After all, caribous are living, moving critters, they're not stuck in one place... You could make some caribou carcasses though, that would be cool... Like, make a cave type thing and leave a few caribou carcasses and maybe a skull or two in front of it. That would make it look like the den of a monstrous beastie.

Edit: Spelling.

Haha, nah, I didn't kill the big one (which, I'm guessing, was the one you liked if you liked any of them :o) I killed the small one, I think I might've shown it in Easy terrain, but then again, I just might've not shown it, because I wasn't too happy with it :P It'll serve well as Fenrisian rocks ;) Better than they served as monoliths anyway. I won't kill thre big oen though... I like that one too xD

And great idead with the beast's lair! I might convert that idea into a bear lair or, more likely a Wolf pack's lair or something. Thanks man, I'll definately put that one on the to-do list. But for that, I'll need my foamboards, which I left at my parents house, but will be able to retrive later this month ;)

And about the Shipwreck. It's developing nicely, gonna try and more or less finish it, atleast buildwise, this weekend, and put some pictures up for y'all to see.

I saw the one in the easy terrain thread. It had the ledge cut out on top for the Cron Lord to stand on? I liked that one...

The cave thing just struck me as something that would be cool to include on a board that has terrain from a feral world. If you do try it, be SURE to post pics! ;)

Edit: Weak spelling.

Yeah, that one survived, I killed the other one :P So no fear :)

And yeah.. I'll defintely do a cave as fast as I get hold of my foamboard again.

This is getting way off track. Removing the unnecessary posts. Until the side discussion the thread was going along quite nicely. Let's keep in constructive.

Remember, if you do not like a particular thread, or do not find it helpful you do not have to read or contribute to it.

Looks like I missed something here... well, if it was nothing worth mentioning I guess there's no harm done? :)

I've been building some on the sea today, it's looking great in my own opinion, and gettin' better too. But I seem to have placed my camera somewhere where I can't find it... but when I do, I'll be sure to update with pictures ^_^

About the Gaming board, you're gonna make it a fenrisian board? That would be awesome.. just too bad I'll be building my terrain pieces on more or less flat surfaces...

Anyhow. Be sure to post pics of it later. Even though this is essentially the Thread where I'll build 10 terrain pieces with a fenrisian theme and post pictures of WIPS and finished pieces, anyone could contribute with Fenrisian terrain, as far as I'm concerned ;)

Sorry for the delays, and Yes, i've found my camera now  However! I'm currently involved in a game making-project (universety stuff) which takes about 14 hours of my daytime (that is, from 10 am to 12 pm), giving me next to nothing timewise to work on the sea during weekdays. I will, howevere, committ a lot of my upcoming weekend to the proejct, and also spend some hours today. I'll take some pictures on it too, if I get time. The boat is almost done, and I'll be flocking the ground and glueing the sea today or tomorrow :tu:

Yeah, actually , I do :P And it's pretty fun! But today, finally, I got some time for other things. ANd thus, I finisehd the building of the ship! And some more details on the frozen ship terrain-piece. Here's some more WIP-pictures, from Step 11 to Step !

It's not much since last time, but it's something. The weekend will bring more, I hope :)

Anyways, to the WIPs!

Step 11

http://img443.imageshack.us/img443/4762/picture11ef9.jpg

I built the sail from some textile and some sticks, and then painted it and wrote "Fenris" on it in old viking runes. Very simple, but gives the whole thing a lot more feeling.

Step 12

http://img187.imageshack.us/img187/6641/picture12bf3.jpg

Not much to say about this one, started making cargo and other items that could've floated out of the broken ship before the ice froze. Put them all on the seashore.

Step 14

http://img407.imageshack.us/img407/6425/picture13yq6.jpg

This is what the above mentioned cargo crates look like when they're a bit more done.

Step 15

http://img204.imageshack.us/img204/7403/picture14ug6.jpg

I also finished the work on the ship. I addes a railing and some details to the hull, and a small shack at the back of the boat, to give it a more boat-ish form.

Step 16

http://img104.imageshack.us/img104/3869/picture15hi2.jpg

And this is what the whole thing looks like atm. Almost done, details wise, next up is flocking, glueing and painting!

Be back with more after the weekend!

Wow! Coolness to the max!!! :P

The ship looks good, and the crates look pretty nice too... Maybe you could add a barrel or two to the shore as well?

Or, perhaps have a crate or barrel stuck out on the sea, like it got stuck in the ice when the sea got frozen over. That would be cool...

Keep it up dude!

Edit: WOAH!!! DUDE!!! I just saw your Kraken diorama! I voted a ten! That is Golden Demon Material there!!! Wow...
