Vash113
Ok well actually my tactics in this game were shockingly cheesy, I had not intended to ever used the mixed unit cover strategy, however several factors influenced the decision. 1st I wanted to actually see how it worked, 2nd I wanted to take my IG opponent down a peg, 3rd I thought it would be funny and none of the players at the store had seen it done before, 4th it was a good excuse to field my Wolves as a Power Armored horde, also something none of the other players had seen before. As penance I'm forgoeing my ale for the evening for even considering doing something so cheesy but... it was really funny. Anyway this is the 1st time I've been to this particular hobby shop to game in oh... bout 2 1/2 years, ever since I went off to college in Fredericksburg. When I left so did a lot of other people and the 40k group there sort of collapsed/died away, but a new group of players has now grown and to my immense surprise I ran into a number of old acquantances this afternoon, including a fellow Space Wolf player and an old regular opponent and Inquisition player. My list was roughly: Wolf Lord -BP, FB, wolfy bits, Belt of Russ, Runic Armor Wolf Priest -BP, PW, Runic Armor, wolfy bits Wolf Guard Battle Leader -SB, FB, Termie Armor, Wolfie Bits Grey Hunter Pack (10) -Pack Leader, x2 Power Fists, Melta Grey Hunter Pack (10) -Pack Leader, x2 Power Fists, Melta Grey Hunter Pack (8) -Power Fist, Melta Grey Hunter Pack (8) -Power Fist, Plasma Blood Claw Pack (15) -Pack Leader, x2 Power Weapons, x2 Power Fists Blood Claw Pack (15) -Pack Leader, x2 Power Weapons, x2 Power Fists So the game was 2000pts, Annihilation, to make things fair we agreed to use Victory Points not Kill Points. But it didn't end up mattering so whatever. In any case the table had a smattering of small bits of terrain with a giant Ultramarines bunker in the center. Here are the deployment pics: Imperial Guard Deployment: http://i107.photobucket.com/albums/m307/Vash113/IMG_0390-1.jpg Space Wolf Deployment: http://i107.photobucket.com/albums/m307/Vash113/IMG_0389-1.jpg I don't actually know what the Guard list was but it apparently numbered over 100 models, the squad in the second story of that distant structure were ratlings and the tank was a Leman Russ of course. About half the army was outflanking though. Turn 1: Space Wolves -I went first and basically my whole army moved forward in 3 intermixed phalanxes and then sprinted. Luckily every squad moved between 4-5 inches in both phases so I was making pretty good progress across the board. http://i107.photobucket.com/albums/m307/Vash113/IMG_0391-1.jpg http://i107.photobucket.com/albums/m307/Vash113/IMG_0392-1.jpg Imperial Guard -He shot, a couple wolves went down, big whoop. Turn 2: Space Wolves -Continued forward, rightmost phalanx didn't run and fired on the right flank Guard, killed one 5 man squad outright and killed all but 1 of the other, who broke and ran. The other two Phalanxes continued forward, preparing to assault. The OBEL scouts arrived and blew up the Russ clean as you please. It exploded but caused no cassualties to the Guard or Wolves and the crater offered decent enough cover. http://i107.photobucket.com/albums/m307/Vash113/IMG_0393-1.jpg http://i107.photobucket.com/albums/m307/Vash113/IMG_0394-1.jpg Imperial Guard -One of the Outflanking units arrived, a squad of hardened Veterans or something, they shot, a few wolves died, big whoop. Turn 3: Space Wolves -Ah here's where things got fun. Shot a few pistols, roared a few wolfy howls and everybody plunged into combat all across the field. All combats were won, every guardsmen on the field was killed for the loss of 3 wolves total. Not bad I think. http://i107.photobucket.com/albums/m307/Vash113/IMG_0395-1.jpg http://i107.photobucket.com/albums/m307/Vash113/IMG_0396-1.jpg Imperial Guard -Four more of the outflanking squads arrived and piled in on the right flank, they threw some charges, fired lots of guns, caused ZERO cassualties to the wolves. At that point the Guard player gave up and I packed up. Victory to the wolves, a very cheesy victory but it was a fun slaughter and all told I could have probably done just fine blitzing across the field without the phalanx groups but it helped, I took so few cassualties it was laughable and came down on the Guard firebase like a ton of bricks. My IG opponent started off very cocky, then got less cocky, then saw half his army get pulled apart in a single close combat phase and then watched his reinforcements prove ineffective. It was even funnier when he realised just how many Space Wolves and how many cc weapons he was facing, and that not one squad was going to be sitting back and shooting. I think he was anticipating a normal marine army, you know with heavy weapons and far less special cc weapons. Good times, good times. My normal ground pounding tactic is to have a Rune Priest accompanying the front Blood Claw squad and cast Storm Caller on them, then the other units fall in line behind the front Blood Claws and they all benefit from a decent bit of cover saves. Wolf89
Two things... what the hell is Wolfy bits and where can I get them?... are they like kibbles and bits and they act as like combat drugs?... ^_^ The other thing is I'm glad you beat down that IG player, it looks like he didn't even have the IG codex and instead had a photo copied version? He deserved it. :P Most people don't play with Rattlings, but honestly in big games (mainly apoc) they are frekkin amazing for cost effectiveness. I can just hear the IG over the vox... "it was horrible, so many, black, grey, blue, coming towards us, most didn't seem to have a soul, they just kept marching all one color... oh god, they're getting closer! Shoot, SHOOT!!... blkahhhh......" JEFF4i
Very nice batrep! I had a 1,500 match against IG a few weeks ago and went with drop-pod. I don't know what's scarier, seeing a line of storming wolves, or know they are on their way...to right on top of you. Poor IG. Vash113
Two things... what the hell is Wolfy bits and where can I get them?... are they like kibbles and bits and they act as like combat drugs?... :o That just means Wolf Tooth Necklace, Wolf Pelt and anything else wolfy that gets thrown in there but I was too lazy to look up exactly what. The other thing is I'm glad you beat down that IG player, it looks like he didn't even have the IG codex and instead had a photo copied version? He deserved it. :cuss I wasn't paying attention to what his codex looked like, just figuring out where my phalanxes were going to smack into his lines. Most people don't play with Rattlings, but honestly in big games (mainly apoc) they are frekkin amazing for cost effectiveness. Yea, they also put up the best fight in cc sadly enough, well compared to their comrades anyway. I can just hear the IG over the vox... "it was horrible, so many, black, grey, blue, coming towards us, most didn't seem to have a soul, they just kept marching all one color... oh god, they're getting closer! Shoot, SHOOT!!... blkahhhh......" Hahaha, that made my morning :cuss. Very nice batrep! I had a 1,500 match against IG a few weeks ago and went with drop-pod. I don't know what's scarier, seeing a line of storming wolves, or know they are on their way...to right on top of you. Poor IG. Aha Drop Pods are fun, the three games I've previously played with this army (I know only 3 :() were using all Drop Pods, it was really funny to start a game with nothing on the board and 8 or 9 pods lined up on the side waiting to arrive. The psychological impact is great.
