Paladins of Dercia

Hail brother Liberites!

My mind was wandering and came up with a few ideas for a new Chapter. No plans to model them (too busy getting the Emperor’s Blade onto the tabletop) but might try and flesh it out into a proper IA

Just brainstorming at mo, really. only spent a few mins thinking about it but here’s what I’ve got so far, would love to know what everyone thinks

Paladins of Dercia

Battle Brother and Vet Sgt of the 2nd Co. (not sure why but scheme seems familiar. only knocked it together quickly and worried that i've unwittingly pinched someone else's scheme!? if it belongs to anyone let me know!! ^_^ )

Dorn geneseed, direct IF successors, 9th Founding, very honour bound, traditionalists (stick to Codex), considered arrogant by many (probably most!) other Imperials but none doubt loyalty or prowess

Homeworld:

Feudal, warring states ruled by Lords, knights, men at arms, serfs, etc – people big, broad shouldered.

Serfs typically captured from people of Great Fens, edge of empire of knights, much smaller than Dercians, wiry, quick, sneaky, not as technologically developed, dirty –raid against Dercians , when captured used as slave labour, worked to death, viewed as subhuman

Nature:

People very conscious of honour, nobility, lineage, etc

1st CM saw this, need unite warriors loyal to different families, bloodlines, and that commoners might be worthy recruits – many problems

solution = ordered that each new marine be taught about his new heritage; that of the marine from whose geneseed his own had been created. Now, millennia later, all marines in Chapter can trace their ‘family line’ (all the Paladins who have shared same geneseed line) and record of their great deeds, back to one of original 1,000 who began Chapter, and from them to Dorn himself e.g Brother Alhaus, (gene)son of Dernhelm, (gene) son of….. etc, and so on back to – …one of original 1,000, (gene)son of Dorn. Thus Chapter all brothers, no division caused from whatever Dercian bloodline may come from

Chapter:

Codex org, like IF, resolute, determined, unyielding, slight heavy preference even in assault (tanks over bikes/speeders, termi’s over vanguard, etc)

Codex Divergence:

Mostly none but proud knightly nature means beneath the honour of any recruit to skulk about battlefield, cowardly – no Brother, even young, would serve as scout. Marines inducted direct into one of reserve co.

However, strict follow of ‘dex mean must have light infantry 10th co.

4th Chapter Master, born and raised on Dercia, decide no warrior should be forced act cowardly way, instead began practice of raiding Fen people for recruits for 10th, ideal as scouts. Not trained or implanted as full Battle Brothers (not honoured with Geneseed + heritage that comes with it), just given tactical + obedience indoctrination, etc. Used callously by Chapter, bait, cannon fodder, poorly equipped + trained compared to regular co’s, extremely high turn over in numbers recruited + KIA

(rules for 10th: just use reg scout squads, lower stats show less training, not give much extra wargear, etc.

Poss make up special character, 10th co. Captain, allows upgrade squad with better stats, equipment, represent his retinue of those survived long enough to get good?)

That’s it so far. Any thoughts, suggestions, etc are entirely welcome!

Cheers

I like it, but I would say you need some sort of Scout Company. The fluff about no skulking about can be done by you as a player never choosing to infiltrate, outflank, scout, whatever.

Alternatively, you could use the above suggestion for 'true' scouts, the ones who will end up as Marines, but actually use the infiltrate/scout/outflank/whatever rules for your 'light infantry' with Guard models as counts-as scouts, or use the Inquisitorial Storm Trooper rules as allies.

thanks Tyrak!

although (and maybe i didn't explain it properly) they do have a 10th Co. and recognize that there are times that the Codex stipulates that scout are useful, even necessary, but they just feel that the skulking-ness of it is beneath their sense of honour. hence, they give the job to the lowlife scum that they otherwise wouldn't let polish their boots. technically they're part of the Chapter, but in reality the Chapter command structure just uses them and forgets them

thanks for the input! :jaw:

I'm with you on that, but if that's how it works how do give train Marines who haven't earned their Black Carapace yet?

Distinguishing between scouts (small 's', the light infantry you mention) and Scouts (capital 'S', trainee Marines) is going to be important for establishing how you recruit.

Then call the trainee Marines 'Neophytes', 'Inductees' or 'Supplicants'. Either way, it's possible that, like the Space Wolves, this Chapter could simply give its trainees the carapace. Or perhaps they wouldn't train on the battlefield until they earn their carapace.

ah, sorry, i get what you mean now! um, good point... thinking about it i reckon i'll go somewhere between the 2 ways Mol mentioned above (cheers mate!), perhaps say they spend slightly longer than an average Chapter in training before being allowed on battlefield, then get given Black Carapace +PA slightly early (a la SW) and go straight into one of the reserve Co.'s

so basically the time a recruit in another Chapter would spend fighting in the 10th Co. would be split between the prior and following stages, if that makes any kind of sense! ;)

thanks again guys
