Marshal Rohr
Chaplain Grimaldus eyed the battlements warily, if it came down to it, they would be strong enough. He knew that walls were only as strong as the men defending them, and his Templars would not falter; unfortunately, he could not speak for the pressed boys and men who had been gathered from the refugee holds deep inside the Temple of the Emperor Ascendant. The Temple was the center of resistance in this precinct of Hive Helsreach, the High Marshal had personally assigned him to its defense and he would not see it desecrated by the unholy Ork filth now making their way through the Hive towards the Temple. He scanned the area, his trained eye cataloguing fire lanes or sections of the wall that had fallen into disrepair. Is this what it felt like? For Lord Dorn, on the eve of the Heresy. Checking and rechecking the defenses to be sure of their integrity, he wondered. He continued on through the courtyards surrounding the Sanctuary Primus. Stopping again to watch as the pressed refugees were given weapons by the Steel Legionnaires assigned to the defense of the Temple. His gaze rested on a young boy, no more than 15 years old, as he cleared his autogun into a barrel. The youth looked up at the towering figure, his eyes meeting the piercing stare of his skull mask. Deciding to speak with him, he strode towards the teen. Startled by the sudden movement from the giant, like a child who had been caught staring he broke eye contact and looked away, no doubt hoping he wasn’t coming to berate him for gaping at an Astartes. ‘Boy, post,’ commanded Grimaldus, his vox unit converting his voice into a grating metallic bark. The boy, understandably wary, jogged to where Grimaldus was standing, and locked up tight. ‘Yes, Lord?’ said the boy still not making eye contact, and staring a hole into Chaplain Grimaldus’ chest plate. ‘Surrender your weapon, lad,” he instructed. Promptly and with a smooth grace of one who had been drilled well, the boy handed the autogun to the Chaplain in parade fashion. Grimaldus chuckled; this boy will do well if his courage matches his audacity. ‘Son, this is a fine weapon. I think many a Greenskin will meet their end from the barrel of your rifle. Have faith in the Emperor and I think you might actually survive this. ‘Yes, Lord, thank you, sir,’ said the boy, stumbling over what the proper honorific protocol dictated he should use. ‘Lord, may I ask you something?’ queried the boy, with a grimace. ‘Speak, child,’ ordered Grimaldus. ‘What is it you would ask of me?’ ‘Lord, will the Temple hold?’ The youths eyes were full of remorse, he regretted asking it as soon as he spoke the words. ‘Boy, I am a Black Templar. Scion of the VII Legion, I am made of the flesh of the Emperor himself. I will hold, but you must find it within yourself to face the coming darkness and laugh into the abyss of despair. “Carry the Emperor’s Will as your torch, and with it destroy the Shadows”. Do you know whose words those are boy? They are the words of Lord Sigismund, the Emperor’s Champion, take them to heart and you will find that no obstacle is insurmountable, no task to difficult.’ Grimaldus handed the youth back his weapon, and looked into the boy’s eyes and found understanding. He spun and walked back towards the battlements. The boy would hold, he would fight to his last breath. The Orks will come, and the defenders will be ready. Ferrus Manus
A nice piece Marshal. Are you going to write anymore of it? I must say the scene with Grimaldus and the boy reminds me of the scene in Lotr: The Two Towers when Aragorn takes the boys' sword and says "This is a good sword." The boy replies "Will we survive?" :P Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/157414-youth/#findComment-1843050 Share on other sites

Marshal Rohr
Well, there are no original ideas anymore I guess ;) . After I read your post Ferrus I watched Two Towers and lo and behold its right there. No i don't think I will expand on it as a story but I am writing a fictional recounting of what I think might have happened during the Battle for the Temple of the Emperor Ascendant. Where would I post that? Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/157414-youth/#findComment-1846784 Share on other sites
