Project tutorial, the making of a salamander

Alright! For about a week I've assembled the Captain Lysander model. The sculpt itself was pretty lifeless, so I thought to my self "How can I make him better?". With that in my mind I went straight to the table and started mixing up my putty, I had a rough idea how it was going to be made. I have never converted anything serious so this was my first attempt. And greenstuff is a hell of a clay if you dont know it well! Im pretty used to fimo since I've been playing about with that for some time, again nothing serious but im now realising how fun it really is to sculpt!!

Anyway, Pyriel asked me how to do battle damage, I said I was going to make a little tutorial. This project escalated from a single onconverted miniature to a pretty big project! My thoughts now is that the sculpt is not all that brilliant and has its share of problems, nevertheless the whole outcome is something im pretty pleased with! I had to resculpt most of the face since my dremel went amok and destroyed some parts of it, i then made some more expression to make it look like he was angry and charging.

There is the entire model in its mockup, I have glued the arms on but not the base and the shield. The first thing i would like to paint is the base, because this gives sets the mood of the entire piece. The base will be painted in very dark colours, mostly gray, browns and reds. The color of the model will be somewhat dark and muted with some details giving it more pop, so it will not melt in with the base.

I will also make my first attempt at some serious freehand, im thinking of a skull with some imperial ornaments and such around it, wings and whatnot. I will freehand some other stuff to with chipped of paint so he will look really rugged and wartorn.

Await further updates tomorrow! Hopefully I can start painting the base then, i will also update some pictures of a sideproject that im doing aside from this one, its a classic teclis model that i picked up the last one at an onlinestore! I like to have atleast 2 projects running at the same time so i can switch whenever i feel its nesscesary, when im bored that is  . I will go more indepth with the scheme and how I picked out those colors tomorrow aswell, for those interested in that sort of thing!

And for those who want to know how the original paintjob looks (I have not asked to borrow this pic, but I'm a rascal, if someone wants they can delete it and if so change to something not Copyrighted!)

As you can see, I've changed the pose abit and also given him a new hammer, it is supposed to be a dragon claw or something... dont really know <_<

So this is about it, my salamander captain. I will start my journey hopefully tomorrow!

Alright, I've been quite busy today, started painting almost everything, the face is complete (the skintones) and the armor needs just a little tweaking before they go off to being wethered. I will do a indepth step by step on that one. I wanted to do a sort of pastel looking thing on him without it looking un salamanderish, he will get some more darkening with a darker green but im quite happy with the old tech feel to it, of course in the end he will look more salamander, with scales and everything. Anyways, to the pictures and then im gonna explain a little =) .

Lets start with the base, I used mainly Van Gogh Oil color, a brand that is called h2oils, wich are water mixable. I think the results are pretty good, first time doing this so =).

Yep, primed my base Chaos black. Always spray bases black, that is my motto, its the easiest way!

here are the colors used : Carmine, Burnt Sienna, Yellow Ochre and Azo Lemon yellow. I also used titanium white, but it was in such a big tube, anyways, great colors all of them.

After choosing the oils i started with a fast basecoat of fortress gray dilluted somewhat to the consistency of milk, dont worry if it doesnt cover all of it, we will fix this later.

just a little palette shot, The colours being (from the left) Titanium White, Carmine, Lemon Yellow, Yellow Ochre and burnt sienna.

I mixed Carmine with Lemon yellow about 50/50 and in the end product i used just a hint of yellow ochre to make it more neutral and not as bright.

Here i splotched out all the colors on the base, you can see its mostly yellow dominating, this is also something we will fix, its in its earliest stage right now.

I then took some papertowel and started wiping and smudging out the colors on the surface, this makes them mix and making it look a little rusty =)

Now with a Qtip i took some burnt sienna, this to make some more rust/dirt in a more controlled way.

This is how it will look, i focused mainly where the two parts of plasticard meet, because there is where most of the dirt would be shuffled, its all about logic isnt it? :P

I then took some titanium white to use as a "highlight" to make the rust and dirt have a more pop.

This is the finished product sofar, its not entirely complete, i have some stuff to redo, i have to wash some snakebite and VMC smoke to make it really rusty and dirty!
