Lord Hereticus
Now that I have finally finished my Xenos army from hell, I have decided it is time to get back to my first calling - Chaos. Inspired by Metcalfedan's excellent thread on metallic marines I have found myself wanting to use his techniques to do metallic Alpha Legion. After some experimentation I have come up with a couple of possible schemes, which I would like your opinions on which one is more Alpha Legion-y Option A: Green with a touch of Blue around the bottom of each armour plate: http://i479.photobucket.com/albums/rr151/lord_hereticus/Alpha%20Legion/DSCN0255.jpg or Option B: Blue with a touch of green around the top of each plate: http://i479.photobucket.com/albums/rr151/lord_hereticus/Alpha%20Legion/DSCN0254.jpg If it helps, here they are side by side: http://i479.photobucket.com/albums/rr151/lord_hereticus/Alpha%20Legion/DSCN0258.jpg So which one guys? A or B? Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/157620-a-painting-blog-of-all-things-chaotic/ Share on other sites
aNex88
I'd go with option 2. Not sure about the actual model in real life, but option 1 fig doesn't seem to have enough blue in my opinion. Looks like a Sons of Horus legionaire rather than Alpha. lord_bunny
the 2nd one is fluffy, and to be honest looks more alpha legion. Welcome to the metallic armies, I'm dark purple and bone skeletal spacemarines. Captain Pugno
i agree with the above posters. Option 2 Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/157620-a-painting-blog-of-all-things-chaotic/#findComment-1844668 Share on other sites
Sarr
Most definitely the second. Looking good, hope to see some more of them. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/157620-a-painting-blog-of-all-things-chaotic/#findComment-1845044 Share on other sites
Lord Hereticus
After some experimentation with green/blue layer combinations I have finally finished my first 3 Legionnaires. Much of this army will be "re-cycled" models so occasionally there may be a surface that isn't as pristine as it used to be (LH shoulderpad of boltgun marine for example). There will also be some older (uglier) metal models included too (eg: flamer). Everything will be painted to a tabletop standard. Anyway, enough of the blah blah blah and making excuses for my crappy painting, on with the pictures: Aspiring Champion: http://i479.photobucket.com/albums/rr151/lord_hereticus/Alpha%20Legion/DSCN0289.jpg Flamer: http://i479.photobucket.com/albums/rr151/lord_hereticus/Alpha%20Legion/DSCN0287.jpg Random boltgun dude: http://i479.photobucket.com/albums/rr151/lord_hereticus/Alpha%20Legion/DSCN0288.jpg The three amigos: http://i479.photobucket.com/albums/rr151/lord_hereticus/Alpha%20Legion/DSCN0291.jpg http://i479.photobucket.com/albums/rr151/lord_hereticus/Alpha%20Legion/DSCN0294.jpg They are not "technically" finished, the still need transfers and basing, neither of which will get done until my "Battlefield of Thran" bases arrive from IronHalo.net C&C welcome Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/157620-a-painting-blog-of-all-things-chaotic/#findComment-1854869 Share on other sites
WarpWhisper
Aha, found where you were hiding.... now try again, but infiltrate better. Are you going with all recycled parts, or will you need to inject a few new bits? i.e. Did you manage to disassemble all your old minis without mishap? Lord Hereticus
There will be some new bits as well. Mainly things like heavy and special weapons, as my old TS army had none of those weapons. My chosen will be new, being made out of Chaos and DA veteran parts. I will also need to pick up a couple of new vehicles. But all the basic grunts will be recycled. Lord Hereticus
Alrighty, update time. My first squad of sneaky gits is finished: Bolter dudes: http://i479.photobucket.com/albums/rr151/lord_hereticus/Alpha%20Legion/DSCN0334.jpg CCW dudes: http://i479.photobucket.com/albums/rr151/lord_hereticus/Alpha%20Legion/DSCN0335.jpg Asp. Champ, Flamer and Icon Bearer: http://i479.photobucket.com/albums/rr151/lord_hereticus/Alpha%20Legion/DSCN0336.jpg For thier shoulderpads, I am exceptionally unhappy with the decals on there, so I may just make a mould of one of the hydra heads I have used on the rhino (see below) and put a single hydra head on each legionnaire. Next on the table is the squads rhino. For my last army, I made the mistake of painting all my vehicles last. This was a huge drain on my motivation. (If I never see another Devilfish body I will be a happy lad). This time I will make sure I do a squads transport when I do the squad. For my AL vehicles, I have made them less overtly chaos-y, which means no trophy racks and the like. http://i479.photobucket.com/albums/rr151/lord_hereticus/Alpha%20Legion/DSCN0337.jpg There is a triple-hydra head on the front though, because I have had that idea for ages, and it looks cool. http://i479.photobucket.com/albums/rr151/lord_hereticus/Alpha%20Legion/DSCN0338.jpg http://i479.photobucket.com/albums/rr151/lord_hereticus/Alpha%20Legion/DSCN0339.jpg Aside from this the only other chaos bits is a star on one door and a set of chains hanging from the back door. Brother__Paulius
Some of the best alpha legion I have seen. Really love those classic models, so characterful. Nice contrast with the red. Front of the Rhino looks cool as well. Chaplain Octavian
The front of the Rhino is sweet, that is such a good idea I just might steal it.... :) I also like your model's simple but yet really dynamic poses! Lord Hereticus
As mentioned in my last update, I have now started casting Hydra heads to place on each marines right shoulder pad. Using a couple of 25mm square bases full of Green Stuff I have made enough moulds to do 4 heads at a time. The first batch has just come out of the mould and been attached to shoulder pads. http://i479.photobucket.com/albums/rr151/lord_hereticus/Alpha%20Legion/DSCN0346.jpg http://i479.photobucket.com/albums/rr151/lord_hereticus/Alpha%20Legion/DSCN0351.jpg The first 7 will go on the under construction Havocs, before I add them all to the already completed CSM squad. aNex88
Can we get a frontal shot of the shoulder pad? I want to see how thick the hydra head really is and how much it pops off the pad. I hope it's not protruding too much off it. If it is, you mite need to shave it down a tad I'd say. Love the idea though. I agree with the decals. Never been a fan of them. Only time I've used them were for my Imperial Fists just mainly because I didn't want to paint the white circle over the yellow armour haha. Have you tried free-handing the 3-headed hydra? Lord Hereticus
Yay, update time. It's been a while, but I have got stuff done. First off, a Rhino for squad 1: http://i479.photobucket.com/albums/rr151/lord_hereticus/Alpha%20Legion/DSCN0396.jpg http://i479.photobucket.com/albums/rr151/lord_hereticus/Alpha%20Legion/DSCN0397.jpg Not 100% sure about the effect of the metallic on the larger surface, but it's growing on me. Although next time, I may not do the first coat of black wash, to help cut down some of the streakyness. Next up, a squad of Havocs. I know a lot of people do not like Havocs (or Devastators for that matter), but there is something reassuring about having a solid firebase. Heavy Bolters: http://i479.photobucket.com/albums/rr151/lord_hereticus/Alpha%20Legion/DSCN0411.jpg http://i479.photobucket.com/albums/rr151/lord_hereticus/Alpha%20Legion/DSCN0412.jpg Missile Launcher and Lascannon: http://i479.photobucket.com/albums/rr151/lord_hereticus/Alpha%20Legion/DSCN0413.jpg http://i479.photobucket.com/albums/rr151/lord_hereticus/Alpha%20Legion/DSCN0414.jpg Ablative marines: http://i479.photobucket.com/albums/rr151/lord_hereticus/Alpha%20Legion/DSCN0415.jpg Icon bearer (with really crappy freehand :D ) http://i479.photobucket.com/albums/rr151/lord_hereticus/Alpha%20Legion/DSCN0416.jpg And finally, as a treat for getting this far, a couple of shots of my WIP Lord at the blu-tac stage of development: http://i479.photobucket.com/albums/rr151/lord_hereticus/Alpha%20Legion/DSCN0421.jpg http://i479.photobucket.com/albums/rr151/lord_hereticus/Alpha%20Legion/DSCN0422.jpg Cheers :ermm: Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/157620-a-painting-blog-of-all-things-chaotic/#findComment-1906651 Share on other sites
Dràyhèn
The best Alphas I've ever seen, well executed if you ask me. Aside from the fact that I don't like the old figs (they don't fit to Alphas), I think you should continue that way. The hydra's heads on shoulders look awesome btw, very nice idea. BUT, I don't like a bit about that lord. Swap the head, take off the heads from the backpack (too big for my taste) and either fix the pose of the claws or swap them for dual chainswords or go with the typical bolt pistol & chainsword combo. I don't see Alphas as mutated neither reckless, and the lord looks like both :) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/157620-a-painting-blog-of-all-things-chaotic/#findComment-1909668 Share on other sites
Lord Hereticus
Thanks for the comments. For the lord, I agree with the helmet and ended up changing it. The hydra head vents on the backpack don't look oversized in RL and is a standard AL hero conversion that has been done many times and looks good when finished. As for his pose, it's not reckless its dynamic ;) AL may scheme and plan like no-one else, but once battle is joined they are just as ferocious in combat as any other (non-psychotic) flavour of marine. Lord Hereticus
Ooooh, another update. I'm flying at the moment. One of the perks of having a month off I guess :P Ladies and Gentlemen (Pfft who am I kidding, theres no women here :woot: ), the Chaos Lord sometimes known as Alpharius. http://i479.photobucket.com/albums/rr151/lord_hereticus/Alpha%20Legion/DSCN0480.jpg http://i479.photobucket.com/albums/rr151/lord_hereticus/Alpha%20Legion/DSCN0482.jpg And because I got bored, I kitbashed this Sorceror Lord together for my upcoming Death Guard army. He's made up of the free AoBR marine and left over bits from the Chaos Termie Lord box. I present Lord Silus Animus, also known as "The Re-animator" and the "Necro-monger" http://i479.photobucket.com/albums/rr151/lord_hereticus/Death%20Guard/DSCN0479.jpg http://i479.photobucket.com/albums/rr151/lord_hereticus/Death%20Guard/DSCN0427.jpg http://i479.photobucket.com/albums/rr151/lord_hereticus/Death%20Guard/DSCN0425.jpg C&C welcome as usual. Lord Hereticus
It's been a while between updates, mainly because I have fallen prey to the crack-like addiction that is Guitar Hero. But there is hope in sight! With the start of the Call of Chaos III painting challenge, I have been remotivated back to painting. My CoCIII list of units to be painted is a mix of Alpha Legion and World Eaters, first on the painting table is the first half of my chosen squad. Still very much a WIP, I am most pleased with the way thier robes came out. http://i479.photobucket.com/albums/rr151/lord_hereticus/Alpha%20Legion/DSCN0769.jpg http://i479.photobucket.com/albums/rr151/lord_hereticus/Alpha%20Legion/DSCN0770.jpg I have also assembled my Winged Daemon Prince for my World Eaters army. He is based on the spawn body, with parts added from the possessed sprue. Fairly simple kitbash, but I like him. He stands a good deal taller than your average marine, although not as tall as the metal DP. http://i479.photobucket.com/albums/rr151/lord_hereticus/World%20Eaters/DSCN0771.jpg C&C welcome as usual. Lord Hereticus
Update time: Bunny-Eared Beserker Terminators! Thats right, I said it: bunny ears. I know many people hate the bunny ears, but Khorne bless them, I love the little buggers and had to have them on my Termis. Please ignore the bases. They will be replaced when I cast up my "field of bones" bases for the entire army. http://i479.photobucket.com/albums/rr151/lord_hereticus/World%20Eaters/DSCN0789.jpg http://i479.photobucket.com/albums/rr151/lord_hereticus/World%20Eaters/DSCN0790.jpg C&C as usual. Lord Hereticus
Back to back updates with no comments in between. :) Sad. Anyway... I have now finished my first Winged Daemon Prince of Khorne. http://i479.photobucket.com/albums/rr151/lord_hereticus/World%20Eaters/DSCN0797.jpg http://i479.photobucket.com/albums/rr151/lord_hereticus/World%20Eaters/DSCN0798.jpg Some people had suggested "Blinging him up" with gold chain to make him look bulkier, especially around the arms and to justify his 3+ save. However I have decided that I like the raw, naked power look he has going now and justifying his 3+ save with the phrase " He's a big-ass daemon, he doesn't need physical, shiny armour" I also know his eyes are a bit "meh" but I suck at eyes, so they are probably as good as they are going to get.
