Koran's Dark Angels

Well here's my first post so play nice :) A mate showed me the site and I couldnt not join, there's some amazing stuff on here.

This is what Ive manage to paint of a Dark Angels force so far (which so far hasnt lost a game :) ).

The idea behind the army came about when I realised that pretty much all of my armies in the past had an almost cartoony quality to their painting. So with that in mind I decided I wanted an army that looked more realistic and "gritty". The basing came about from that as from what you read about in the fluff most battles are taking part in cities and hives of the Imperium, some people dont like it thinking its too dull and others do... Cant win them all I guess ;p

Well without mumbling on any more heres my first two tactical squads and a few close ups.

The pic below looks annoyingly brighter than they are actually painted and I cant seem to correct it... Annoying. the close ups show the real colours better.

For a first post its all looking pretty good! And welcome to the B&C.

I think you've definitely achieved the 'gritty' look pretty well with your painting. Things i like:

The battle damage - chipped armour etc. I take it that is all just done with paint?

The OSL on the plasma gunner. Nicely done and not too OTT.

The sergeants beard.

The effect on the power sword. So far i have been doing my power swords in metallics but might try adding a similar sort of lightning effect.

Thanks guys.

The chips (and any symbols on armour) are all painted on. Nothing is cut into the armour (Id spent enough time on repositioning other models to want to do that).

The plasma glow is just layered watered down enchanted blue (with more layers the closer to the light source you get) and then ice blue with a little enchanted blue on the very close edges.

As for the facial hair... Thats something a great guy called Gareth from another site had posted up... Its just a layer or two of watered down badab black.

Hmmm so much to like. I agree with everyone elses comments plus, the sarge with the powerfist looks really sinister :) – really 'dark' Dark Angels. As to the bases – I like 'em and a nice change from the 'grass field' approach.

Cheers

@Winterdyne: The green is dark angels green (over a black basecoat) with 1:1 DA and catachan green, then just catachan green and finally catachan greena and a little white. The choice of colours came from IA:5 where I noticed the Dark Angel marines they had up looked really cool to me and I noticed the highlighting had a different colouring to the norm....

You've just changed my DA recipe. Thanks, will try it next time I'm doing some... Which will probably be when there's a new codex as I'm jumping ship to a C:SM army...

Well here's my first post so play nice...

Play nice? There's no reason to hold back against newer members, especially ones of your caliber. These are some of the best Dark Angels I've seen and I think you've nailed the dark green armor perfectly. I also like the additional plasma source-lighting it contrasts well with the figures. Again, good job and I look forward to seeing more from you in the future.

Thanks again. That was actually the first OSL I did for the army (and was only the second time Id tried it). What you can see actually probably counts as the third go at OSL as the first attempt I did on that model was a bit of a bugger up (so was repainted)
