Thought and ideas

Greets,

I am in a tricky situation. I am an old wolf. I've been building and painting for 16 years. I stopped playing back at the end of 2nd edition, when I was told no one was willing to play against me until I learned to paint. I contiuned to paint and learn, but I never played another game.

So, now I'm coming back. Which makes me a new wolf. I'm not trying to glorify my skills, I consider them average table top quality. But, as I am building a new army I want it to be very much MY army.

I wanted to float a few ideas by you guys to get a feel for my fluff and background, as well as input as to if it could work by the rules.

IDEAS:

1) the return of Russ - In many of the icelandic sagas (as well as many of the poetic sagas of the vikings), a hero arrives. Many times it is Wotan (odin, wodin, wodan). I'm thinking of basing my wolf lord on this idea. A bigger, meaner, feral wolf lord.

A) Should I try ancient (heresy era armor), newer (modern) armor, or mixed armor (like 13th company)?

2) The Wolf Guard - Russ took his captains with him when he left. I would like to carry this into my army.

A) Should I use the same concepts in idea 1?

3) I really like the idea of the 13th company. But I do not want to cheat (or be thought of a a cheater!)

A) my packs will be straight out of the SW codex. If I mix in packs that are built like 13th company (mixed chaos armor), is it cheating? I plan to do this for all the packs, scouts, claws, hunters and fangs. I do not want the rules of the 13th company, only the feel of them.

B ) All of my marines are "bigger" than box marines. I was thinking of making the "new" wolves true scale and making the "old" wolves slightly larger than true scale.

4) Old eqipment vs. new.

A) Should I go with new equipment or old? I'm leaning towards a combination of the two. I see Russ (my WL will be named Vandring) coming back and not being accepted by all the wolves. He would gain a following in the eye and then absorb "newer" wolves upon his return. Does that make sense?

It's very much an idea in the early stages. Any input would be welcome. (as long as you don't tell me to paint all my mini's black and follow chaos!!)

Better days,

There are space marines with hello kitty heads on them, they are still rules-wise space marines. You can have them look like most anything within reason as long as you follow the profiles and the rules to the letter. They have bolters? close combat weapons? Must be Grey Hunters.

So feel free to mix and match some chaos armor and some regular parts, new models and old, new armors and old, heck new rhinos and old. Thats not nearly as much of a stretch as some of the armies out there. Enjoy yourself!

First and foremost; who are these hard-asses who won't play you until you "learn to paint"? D-bags all! If you ask me.

To add my two cents I would say that mixing in old heresy armor would add a unique feel to your army and give you the oportunity to answer the Qs about the different looking armored models. And as Grey Mage said adding the chaos parts to your models will not affect their usage on the table so go for that as well. Its not like your using SW and 13th co. rules in the same list.

On to the more critical side of things... I don't think making you models bigger could be a very good idea with the true LOS rule in 5th edition. Unless you mean a broader model, adding hieght could make it harder to get cover saves (unless your IN the terrain you need to be 51% obscured by things like low walls or craters to claim a save) or conceal completely your models until they are in a better position.

All these changes you mentioned are simply esthetic and if someone claims they are the reason they won't play, I'd think they really just don't want their butts handed to them by the toughest marine army around.

Have fun, and post some pics

Well, as 13th Company are according to GW no longer a "real" army, feel free to mix and match whatever you like. As has been pointed out as long as they are recognisably WYSIWYG then there should be no problem. I have a load of bits from the Chaos Warrior set scattered amongst my packs and used to count a Drinking Horn as a Holy Relic, so it's whatever floats your boat. But as Beef says, sounds awesome and we demand pics of this project!

The core of my Space Wolves was a former 13th Company army that I refit as normal Space Wolves, here's one of the Grey Hunter packs:

Mixed loyalist and chaos armor, not the 13th Company mixed scheme but you get the idea. Model wise you can do most anything you want as long as it's still WYSIWYG.

Greets,

@G. A. K. - interesting thoughts about not making them bigger. This could really make me rethink the entire army concept.

This also brings up something else that is core to my army. I am building all my miniatures on "termie" bases. I was told this would also give them a huge disadvantage. Is that the same now or is it different by the new rules?

I should point out that I don't care if I win or lose. I just really enjoy the hobby. Not playing for so long has allowed me to enjoy other aspects of the hobby. Not just reading the background fluff, but reading real history to see where the fluff comes from. I think "vikings" is the wrong way to think of the wolves :) (I expect to get blasted for that one)

I see my wolves as more like early Franks. Half civilized barbarians defending a crumbling empire (sound familiar?) I'll show this by having the "13th company" marines being the more feral and the "modern wolves" being the more civilized.

Size comparison (left = captains, middle = troops, right = enemies  )

I'll post updates as I build them, unless I'm asked to stop :)

I am not really in a big rush to get the project completed. So, if anyone has any ideas to improve, build on, or change in the army building process, please speak up. I'm trying to get better and any tips or ideas are welcome.

Better days,

Termie bases wouldn't be too bad in my few, I have a few HQs on termie bases (one is a modified Logan and the other has a murdered T-sons at his feet) and it has been fine, a whole army on them could prove interesting when disembarking from vehicles but as only part of the base needs to be within 2" of the access point it can easily be done in most cases (as long as you have more than one door to exit). I'd broaden thier stance to use the whole base though, because you sound like your doing it from a fluff stand point, but others could see it as gaming the base rules to get an extra half inch of distance out of disembarking from a transport to gaurantee that assault move, if they were just regular guys on larger bases that is.
