Scratch Built Super Heavy Flyer

Angron

Recommended Posts

Greetings B&C members. I'm unsure if this qualifies here or under apocalypse. My LGS just had its annual mega-apocalypse battle. 150,000 points. 30 players. This year seemed to be the year of the super heavy (2 Bio Titans, 11 Stompas, 3 Reavers, 6 Warhounds and a Thunderhawk). Lacking the funds for a forgeworld peice i decided to scratch build a Super Heavy Flyer of my own. I was gonna detail the process here if anyone is interested. I started with some Cedar wood and an empty Plastic wrap tube.

Depending on how big your hand is..it could be quite massive, as you have yet to do a nose or tail. =-D

I'd love to see way more pics, you can PM me if you don't wish to post them...but this is the right place, as it IS a WIP, but it can go to the Apoc section too, once its done.

If this looks as promising as I hope it is, I'll follow it very closely. Don't let me down.

Well I'll be. Theres Actually interest. Heres the rest of the assembly photos I have. I'll give it a day or so then post the primed peices. And yes, this thing is a monster. Its 17" wide and 18" long. Depending on the set up its about half a deployment zone.

With the added body fin.

This was all done using nothing but Hot Glue and a wood saw.

Looks pretty cool...

It is comments like that that make me want to scream and swear (which I won't, because I like being on this board and don't want to be banned).

And they are everywhere. Anyone who paints his Black Reach Minis with at least two colors is awesome. Argh! Making meaningless posts like this will probably get your postcount up and I guess that makes some people feel really warm inside.

But you are not helping the OP with telling him how cool he (or his stuff) is, if it is not, in fact, good. There are some very talented converters and painters on this board, like madscuzzy, lunchbox, bobpanda and a helluva lot more. What they do is mostly awesome and cool and great, so use their stuff as reference before dealing out mindless compliments on barely started work.

Rant aside, you still have a lot of work to do on that.

It has potential, but so far it's just a tube with wings glued on. I hope you'll work on it and turn it into something very cool.

Hmm. Despite the fact that you seem to have just dissed me, I will try to explain myself... Try being the key word here.

I am tired. I am running on empty, and I wished to post a comment somewhere along the lines of: That looks pretty cool so-far. Can't wait to see it finished, keep working on it.

Apparently what came out was: Looks pretty cool...

I must have hit the the post reply button before I was finished formulating my post.

I will admit that that was a pretty pointless post, and therefore, I will edit it.

if it is chaos or imperial you really need to get it more blocky(more hard edges)

now it just looks like a tau starship, or a missle,

i mean look at the rhino, for example thats nothing more than a large steel box with an engine in it (and some seats)

or the land speeder that thing should not be able to fly

but it looks really good

(i hope my post was helpfull)

I am not really dissing (Oo gangsta?) you, exactly. I made the effort of looking at your profile and saw that you do post real comments, too.

There just seems to be this general urge of people wanting to post things like that without really looking at what is presented. I just feel dumb for trying to provide real comments and critizism while other just seem to randomly shout about "Great, Win, Awesome" just for the sound of it.

Of course I too occasionally post the "Jawdrop-Smiley"-Post, but I try to do so only when it is really appropriate.

And I don't want to discourage Angron and his project, either. I had been bursting to say this for a while now and it just blurted out, couldn't help it.

Looking to have some great potential. I just dont get the feeling of Marine Flyer so much yet. I see super heavy though. Get some plasticard and box out the hull a little. Itll give more shape and make it more imperial. Good Luck with the game though!

Wow. I'm happy to see that my little side project has gathered some attention. I got some more work applied today. I know it doesnt look very marine like or blocky in the preliminary stages. Today i Added a front hull to it and primed which i think helps round out its marine look. Please bear in minds that it IS my first attempt at any sort of conversion or scratch building so point out what you will but know that my talent is "limited." That being said, I am under no means posting just to get an ego boost. Critisism is good when applied correctly. "It sucks doesnt help" "It needs better angles on the other hand does, so thank you" As for rules I was thinking of using the thunderhawk with some tweaks, ie no carry capacity, no heavy bolters. Gonna ask both here and at my LGS for suggestions. I know there is some fluff that states the Space Wolves modified a Predator to make the Annhilator patter, and I was working in that theme when designing. Heres what got added today. All totaled its 5 more photos.

Looks way less boxier now. And it sort of looks more marineish. It kind of looks like a land speeder in the front, which is what I originally thought it was.

Will the hull cannon be able to elevate? It looks like more piping.

Looks less like a rocket too.

Nice to see it is taking a bit of shape.

Hard to tell from the camera angle but it looks like the cockpit is a tad misaligned with the top of the fuselage. Like I said though, could just be the camera angle playing tricks on me. I agree that it might be good to try and separate the cannon from the hull a bit if possible.

I noticed you put some lascannon bits on the wing tips, I don't suppose we could get a bit closer on that could we?

One thing that occurred to me... since you are giving up transport capacity, maybe you should give it some ordinance (a bomb-bay). That would add some character for sure!! Plus the rules would be fun to work out.

Hmm. The addition of the cockpit makes it look much more "Marine-y"...

It looks very good so far. I think that the addition of a bomb-bay would be very interesting to work out rules-wise.

If you did do that though, perhaps you could "fatten" the sides in the middle just a bit? Maybe adding halves of toilet paper tubes to the side?

A handy-dandy diagram made in MS Paint.

Edit: The tubes would be just in front of the wings...

@ geo: yes its a bit misaligned. I didnt realise till the glue set.

@shorts: unfortunately no, it doesnt move, most of this project was actualluy just trying to get the stuff to stick on a rounded surface.

@brother: i'll get ahold of a TP roll and see how it looks, thanks for the idea.

More photos tommorow post work. Keep up the useful comments, suggestions and critisims.

TP! TP for the bunghole!

Anyway, it's starting to look like something.

Is there any way to remove the putty or glue or whatever it is at the joints of this baby? It would make the whole construction look less improvised. Because marines might not have stylish vehicles, they sure as hell have clean vehicles.
