How many troop choices to take in 1500?

Just been doing some work on my list for 1500 point games. I was wondering how many troop choices are needed. I think a minimum of 3, but 4 sounds really good. With all the objective oriented games, I really think that 4 is almost necessary. But in looking at a lot of the lists posted, I see many that only take 3 Troops choices. I run something like the following

WGBL FA SS RC MB WP 108

Ven Dread AC HF EA 170

GH 8 2PP PG 5B in RB 213 ea

x2

BC 13 2 PF Flamer 212

WS 6 2PP MG OBEL 114

WS 5 4SR ML 80

Total 1110

Here is where I break down and don't know where to go. Any suggestions? I use to play pretty vehicle oriented list in 4e. I have Pred w/LC set up. LRC. A couple of LS that I would field w/MM HF. Just looking for ideas and experience w/5e. I like Vindicators. I just don't know where to best spend points.

Thanks

I think it's safe to say you'll get a different response from each style :)

Personally I go for fairly Mechanized armies. 1-2 Land Raiders + Pred/s or 3 Preds or some other combination of the two.

I usually have 2-3 Troop choices at 1000-2000pts and in my last 3000pts game a had a whopping 4.

I also haven't lost with Wolves yet (Knock on wood) :)

A 2000pts list

But try a few things out and see what works for you...

Edit:

Oh, and I'll recommend getting WTN for your WGBL. Hitting on 3+ is nice.

I'd also recommend either a TLLC/LC Pred or at least giving your VD an LC so you can take down vehicles at range...

In that specific list your army is going to be all over the place, bad terrain and you will be ripped apart one squad at a time. I might be understanding your BCs wrong, but they are hoofing it? I'm seeing about 34 bodies on the field, not bad, but if you could squeeze in 10 more I think you'd be a little closer to a median number. The scouts are good, and useful, but with some objectives I just see you having a hard time holding.
Ahhh, I see what you're getting at. 3 choices isn't bad, I'd still try and get 4, but you can still be effective with 3. Not a fan of my own Pred, but I think some people around here are. I prefer Vindicators for the points. Or...*drool*...Ironclad. Still need to make mine, :D
I'd say... 6. No really the last few games I've been running a full 6. My last 1500pt list had 29 Blood Claws and 32 Grey Hunters in it, plus a Wolf Lord and Battle Leader, 5 Long Fangs and 5 Wolf Scouts. It's been working pretty well for me so far.

Its all in how you make those 3 troop choices work for in your tactics for the objective grab/denial game. You don't have to hold all the objectives, in the very least you have to hold 2 and deny 2 to win. So the question for every game is how are you going to do that with your list. 2 troops are fine if you plan to keep them protected the whole game and not risk them by attacking. You can make them hard as nails by putting in full troop strength with a WG and a HQ to back em up.

With the list you have there, I can see the GH holding the two closest objectives while your BC go out and cause a diversion to draw the enemy away or deny an objective. The hole you have to fill is how are you going to deny the 2nd objetive. I can tell you that your WS won't do it, just to easy to kill off with base fire. Dred is going to be iffy so I suggest you either get some sort of fast unit that will be able to stay alive, go with another troop choice, or get some serious fire power that you can throw down range such as a vindicator backed up by a couple of ABs.

At the minute I run 3 troop choices but my list could work with 2 for my style of play, I always try to plonk as many objectives in my opponents half of the table and use my other harder non troop choices to contest those objectives. Meanwhile my sneaky Razorback unit hangs around in my half claiming my objective. On average your going to get 3 to 4 objectives per game the aim of which is to hold more than your opponent, even if you only hold one objective its still a win.
I've had 4 at 1500pts, came 2nd in a Tourny with it. 3 packs of GH's, Melta Fist and Axe with a HB Razorback working in concert, with a LRC packed with BC's and a Vindicator crusing towards the nastiest looking enemy. Bang bang, you're dead.

I say that you should run 1 per 500pts, rounding up. Thats a base. If you want to go heavy on the troops just keep adding them. I usually take each block of 750 and go like this:

~125pts for HQ.

~350pts for Troops.

~275pts for support.

Of course there are some things that blur the lines. As for instance, transports are kinda split 50/50 between troops and support, Vendreads are HQ and support, and so on. When in doubt, add another squad or expand any non-maxed ones. The only time you shouldnt take a full squad is if they wont fit in the transport.... then its debateable.

But thats just my general philosophy.

I use 4 (5 when i take them in Pods) and have some nice toys added.

3x8 Greyhunters, 1 of them in Rhino.

9 Bloodclaws and RunePriest in Rhino.

Assault Cannon wielding Wolfguard Battle leader

2 Vindicators, Whirlwind and 4 SW scouts with 1 Multimelta.

(note: this leaves points free now as i used to use this with 4th Ed Spacemarine Codex)
