Essayons
Does anyone else find it strange that Honor Guard, Command Squads and Servitors can be fielded entirely separately from the characters that they are intended to accompany (Chapter Masters, Captains and Techmarines respectively)? I mean there is this "Retinue" rule out there, but it seems that Codex: Space Marines disregards it for these units. I find this surprising, because in other Armies' FAQs they adhere to this regularly. The Tau Empires FAQ for instance puts battlesuit teams under the "Retinue" rule. Anyone have any input on why this choice was made, or is this an omission by mistake? Essayons. chapter master 454
Well I think considering the points cost of even our HQ (reaching 3 digits for basic cost) plus any retinue that accompanies him that makes him to heavy in points. Not to mention marines are about being able to take on multiply fronts, command squad and the like are in a sence being a stand-in leader at say a breach where the the leader is at another one. Ferrata
Before each of the said units, it has the line "You may include one [unit] for every [character] in your army." You don't have to run them together, but you have to have the Character to get the Squad (this rule was inserted because of a similiar question about the old command squads) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/158199-honor-guardcommand-squadservitors/#findComment-1851481 Share on other sites
jsutter
At Ozzfest 2000, I remember seeing Tommy Lee launching around the lawn on a gas powered scouter. He had 3 body guards frantically running about 50 feet behind him. I imagine that is how Shrike's command squad would feel. Isiah
DA and BA had similar in their 4th ed codex. Interestingly, DA and BA servitors must 'accompany' their techmarine rather than go it alone. As to why, it does allow slightly more freedom for the IC character as he can join or leave or just ignore his command squad (to join another unit if he wants) as tactics dictate. pwrserge
But you loose the benefits of the retinue rule which kindof blows. It's rather nice to be able to hide a black templar marshal in a pile of brethren. DerekLee688
Just to be clear. You can't choose a command squad as an HQ choice. I relize that Servitors shouldn't command an SM army, but the fluff from the codex points that a honor guard squad has the experience to command a battle. Quite frankly, the name of "Command Squad" implies they can command a small army. I'm simply asking because I'm a noob and am thinking of 500pt. army lists.
