Pre Heresy Night Lords Raptors

I know the modern jump packs are out of the question. :P I was wondering if I could use raptors instead of having to scratch build pre heresy packs.

I have seen pre heresy packs on world eaters, looks hard to get right. So what I was thinking was that maybe raptor packs are okay for Night Lords, since they were the ones that started using them first/the most (i think).

The Night Lords were the first legion to use raptors. The use of assault marines came from them so. . .

Go for it. Just rember to remove anything thats too chaosy (which comes later), or your could use the Raptor backpacks with Assault Marines.

Just remember to pot pics!

Going from the artwork in collected visions the jump packs do differ somewhat from their post-heresy counterparts (looking alot like some of the famous artwork in the original RT rulebook, with big bulky turbines - you can imagine the marine bracing himself before blasting off 100ft into the air, cracking the ground they were standing on with a tremendous rocket noise that would shatter any nearby glass windows! - not the sissy 'hover 1m from the ground and sound like a vacuum cleaner' from DoW!) :D

Anyway I digress.. have you considered converting some yourself? Using the 'sci'fi turbines' from Wookie Hole (Wookie Hole website )

They require very little conversion (just splice them onto an existing marine backpack with the nozels removed) with a little plastic tubing added for length. Below is one I made, and I have 2 left hands so its not that difficult to do:

Here is another one, unfortunately not my own <_< , but again this is a similar idea but with much more detail added:

Thanks for the pics, they look great

I have thought about it, but I've always kinda liked the raptor pack look. Looks more sleek and fast.

I haven't really seen an explanation of how raptor packs came to be though. Were they made during the heresy? (dark mechanicum?) Or were they normal SM pre heresy packs that got morphed by the warp over many years? When did they start to look like the current raptor packs? thousands of years later? If so I probably don't want to use the raptors ;)

One of the great things about pre-heresy (infact, for me it is possibly the best thing!) is that there is so much less restriction in terms of whats 'correct' and 'incorrect'.

Not only was there a lot more variety in terms of wargear, but more if it was being produced all the time - there was a great deal of prototyping and modification - and the book Mechanicum hints at how science was actually a science, not a misunderstood and fading psuedo-religion as it would become 10,000 years later.

Combining with this, there is far less coverage of pre-heresy equipment and events compared to its 40k counterpart, and therefore by definition much more room for the modellers imagination and interpretation.

So Yaji if you want to use raptor backpacks because they look good, then by all means go ahead! Labelling your army as 'pre-heresy' gives you carte blanche to create a unique and interesting army!

For anyone that’s a bit lazier, Maxmini.eu makes a set of Jump Packs for 28mm models that bear a striking resemblance to pre-heresy style 40K models.

I’ve never seen them in person but they look nice from the pics. -OMG
