Forge World - World Eaters Army Blog

Hey guys,

So, I'm on the cusp of finishing a 2000 point Death Guard Army, but I'm getting very tired of painting green. I've got plans, and parts for a World Eaters Army as well, and decided that I'd take a break from Nurgle, and paint some Korne for a while.

When the Forge World Death Guard and World Eaters upgrades were released, I grabbed 30 of each, so without further blabber, here is the first World Eater to emerge from my desk!

CC Welcome. I've never done red before, and welcome any tips on getting a smoother blend!

Looks good, I'm afraid Crimson Gore is one of those colours thats very difficult.

Personally I really like the mottled effect on the armour.

If your looking for a smoother base then I'd recomend either using Scab Red for a base then Red Gore. You could also try using Mechrite Red with a Baal Red wash.

Disciple

looks good mate. well done.

I think an armor wash with your darkest red (red gore?) would tie all the reds back together and help alleviate the patchiness (although there is *nothing* wrong with the way they look now). i would use a "highly" watered mix of the afore-mentioned red and cover the main armor plates. This should move to the give a smoother finish whilst still allowing your blending and highlighting to show through.

hope that helps

Looks great, nice and gritty but agree with the above post, a darker red (maybe even a well watered down purple?) would add a bit more depth and blend the sharpness of the highlighting in for a smoother effect (if thats what you want). I was also thinking a red glaze would give you thaat blood-slicked look.

While we're on inks i'd also consider running a brown over the gold just to make all those rivets pop and give it an older feel... it's all personal preference tho.

Either way he's above avg tabletop and looks badass ;) an army of them would be awesome.

Thanks for the kind words! 'm really still just breaking back into the hobby. I had a small Loyalist force during third edition, and recently regained interest. I'm really trying to work on my painting skills, as they were severely lacking when I left the hobby! Over the next few days (after Wednesday) I'm going to try out a couple other methods for these guys, and pick which ever one turns out the best, so stay tuned for a couple more test minis!

This guy was built up over black primer from Scab red, red gore, blood red, badab back wash, anther pass of blood red and finally a little fiery orange.

Next will be Mecherite red over black primer, then following the same progression, but replacing the black wash with Baal red.

Third will be a white primer test.

Ompfris - I did the weapons blue to try and add a little splash of color from their Legion badge. I think I'l add some green "land masses" to the axe, to see if that ties it in better. If that doesn't work, maybe a little blood and gore will do the trick!

Any other tips will definitely be appreciated!

Also, if anyone has any cool basing suggestions, I'm all ears!

Okie,

Found time to whip up the second test mini. This one was done over a base coat of Mecherite Red over Black Primer. I think he turned out smoother.

I also gave black weapons a shot, and I think they look pretty sharp.

Thanks for looking, let me know what you think! I do know that I missed a mold line on his one arm!

Steff

Well, he's better than the first one. I think the black primer and mecherite red really did the trick! Good job!

The black weapon looks good, but so do your blue one. Can't really decide which one is better. They are both great.

Although he looks more sinister with black weapons imho. :P

I think these are both looking great. I agree with the wash suggestions, other than that, I'd say you've got some pretty spiffy, and somewhat scary looking World Eaters there. They will look ace once the whole lot are ready to roll over the battlefield. Crimson tide indeed!

One thing I will mention, which may have already been mentioned, maybe a chestnut or flesh (or whatever the equivalent is now) wash over the gold to give it that tarnished brassy look.

Keep it up! :)

Hey Tratos,

The helmets and torsos are absolutely sick! Buy many many of them!

Recipe for the red is as follows:

Black Primer

Mecherite red

Baal Red Wash

Red Gore

Blood red

Blazing orange

Bad moon yellow

Baal red wash

It takes some time, but I think it's worth it.

Hi, I am about 1/2 way through painting my full FW WOrld Eaters...

For a smooth red, you need 2 main colours : Scab and blood red

It takes a while, but you need to wet layer the red in many, many coats...

From a black base:

about 6 coats of very thin scab red - paint a little less area each time

About 4 coats of thinned blood red - as above

2 lightish washes of purple (not black - it shades but doesn't give the dirty look)

Finish with highlighting all the way up to yellow then glaze the model with loads of glazes of red to bring the 'top' yellow to red.

It gives a very dark, beautifully smooth red but does take a while.

I'll be using Testor's Flat Red as my basecoat over white primer, with all non-red areas masked off (if need be, as I undercoat my metallics with a dark undercoat before working up).

It should be interesting to see how they turn out compared to the different red approaches in this thread so far...

They look fairly good if you're painting them to a higher-than-tabletop standard and definitely respectable if fielded otherwise. The only thing I'd suggest is deepening the shadows a bit with strategic shading - not quite sure what you'd use since you're looking to keep the color consistent - I'd say some sort of dark brown, though. Brown Ink, Flesh Wash, etc...

Quick update:

Squad 1 (will have black weapons) has its red coats done. There are 2 skull champs here, one will be for my next squad!

Should have them done tonight or tomorrow!

Blood for the Blood God!

First squad of 8 painted, plus an extra skull champ who will end up in the next squad.

I give you, Squad Black

Let men know what you guys think! I'm still not sure how I'm going to base them, so if you have any suggestions, let me know!

Steff

Looking hot! Once the bases are sorted they'll look even better. For mine, I go with black drybrushed with layers of shadow grey, codex grey, bleached bone, and then skull white. Sometimes I'll add small patches of static grass or flock for some variety.

BIG Update!!!!

Just got the rest of my Forge World Order tonight! Contained in the rather large box were:

Chaos Warhound Titan

An'ggrath the Unbound

2 sets of Termie upgrades

and some other small items

I have a second squad of Bezerkers assembled and primed/base-coated, and An'ggrath has been scrubbed, dried and assembled! I'll toss up some pics when I get home tomorrow!
