Imperial Fists

Ez people ;) I've been lurking on these forurms for a while now without posting much, just drawing inspiration & ideas from the works & projects of you all. I feel it's about time i opened a topic of my own, primarily to get some feedback & secondarily to get my arse motivated into painting more!

These pics are of the beginings of an Imperial fists army i've been commissioned to do, so let me know what you reckon :D

The combat sqd in the first pic is very nearly done, as is the commander in the second... the last shows a sqd from aobr and has just had the basic colours blocked in. expect an update soon'ish i've done a little more with the aobr marines since that pic was took.

Very nice work. What is your yellow recipy? Might be the pics or monitor I'm looking at atm, but your yellow appears lemony or even greenish! Still looking good though; nice and crisp.

I love the captain; I've got the very same guy done up in IF colours too :Troops:

great work so far; I'm looking forward to more progress. Will there be vehicles as well?

Cheers :) i think your right about the slight green tint in that last pic (i put it down to DA green in the ferrules of my brushes) this has been sorted now, that sqd is almost done...

as for the method of painting... i go from a black undercoat on all my minis... iyandun darksun all over... then the black... then 4-5 thinish coats of golden yellow... 50/50 chestnut ink / water wash... then up to suburst... building up to bad moon!! once all the detailing is done its a final highlight of 50-50 bad moon / skull white and i'm done after a tidy up. Hard to do, but i'm pleased with the results so far.

These models are commission pieces for a customer of mine and the only vehicles he has in mind so far are 3 rhinos, however i really do like the look of these guys so i plan on adding a small army to my personal collection probably starting with a chaplain dread!

Ok heads, quick update here...

I've made some progress with the aobr sqd. It's not quite there yet, needs tidying and a few more subtle washes here n there, but i'm fairley impressed with the overall look. What do you lot reckon?

The second pic I just couldn't help posting... quite possibly my all time favorite model! when he's done i'll take a good few shots and post elsewhere :)

Yea I went for a light lemony looking yellow after seeing this pic:

The yellow on the Terminators is what i aimed at getting.

Both the Tactical sqd & Combat sqd are now done... I'll take a couple of snaps & post them tomorrow morning

Really nice, clean, crisp yellow. At first I thought they almost looked a bit too flat, but they've grown on me the more I look at them.

I once tried to paint an Averland army in wh fantasy(black and yellow uniforms). Painting the yellow took ages and was really hard work, and I did not get the result that you've got going here. Do you care to share how you've painted them?

And I think that if you painted your powerweapons blue, it would look really good, instead of just metal. But maybe that's just me. ;)

Thanks for the comments people, great inspiration Cheers!

The key to painting these boys is patience, and lots of it... thin coats of paint are a must as is time, let each layer dry fully, not just touch dry either, a good 4 hours. in total these must have had at least 10-12 coats. Another tip... have a clean large'ish brush on hand at all times... this will serve as your eraser... you make a mistake - use this brush loaded with water and wash away the area you just painted quickly, let dry, then start again (fixing mistakes with yellow is a nightmare as i'm sure you all know)

the method i used was this;

1; Black Primer

2; All over with Iyandun Darksun

3; Bring up, in several layers, to Golden Yellow

4; Block in all the Black, armour joins, backpack vents, bolter etc etc

5; Wetbrush up to Sunburst Yellow

6; Wash the whole model with a watered down Chestnut Ink wash 2-3 times

7; Wetbrush the model back up to Sunburst Yellow

8; Then up to Bad Moon Yellow

9; Do all the detailing

10; Just the highlights & i'm done

For the transfers - now these are tricky... gloss coat the pad... trim round the transfer using nail scissors as close to the black outline as possible, then apply. use a piece of tissue and smooth the transfer out. little pieces might break off but they can be sorted with a steady hand & fine brush once everything has dried out.

Hope this helps & here's the finished squads -

Combat Squad - Veteran Sergeant armed with Power Sword & Bolter, Three marines armed with Bolters & the last a Meltagun

Tactical Squad (A.O.B.R) - Sergeant armed with Chainsword & Bolt Pistol, Seven marines armed with Bolters, One a Missile Launcher & the last a Flamer

Not bad for a first attempt at Yellow I hope you all agree. The question I have to ask myself now... what to work on next... some goodies I got lying around include... Chaplain Dread... Warhound Titan... Venerable DA Dread... Ogryns... 10 strong DA veteran sqd... M.O.T.Ravenwing... ok i'll stop now or else i'll be here til next year. Lavaman ;)

p.s. that Commander Model... he's done too... well almost... I gotta paint on some personal heraldry... Daeothar's rogue trader models need another look over for that... will be pinching an idea or 2 i feel :D

  • 3 weeks later...

Good, crisp, clean painting mate. These guys are looking pretty good.

I was looking at the initial photos of your captain and the finished piccies, could it be the lighting in the first picture that makes them look a wee bit lemony? The latter picture seems to be a much stronger shade.

I like the reference photo that you posted but I think that they seem to be quite light because the highlights have been worked up to almost a white, although the base colour in it seems to be sunburst yellow?

It's nice to see someone taking care and getting nice crisp lines though.

Are the Tactical shoulder pads the sculpted ones or did you freehand the tac arroes?
