How Many Grey Knight Players are there out there?

Just as a thought, because I keep reading about how the rewrite of the Inquisition Codex will be at the back of the line because there are so few Grey Knights out there.

There is a 10-ish person league going on at my store in Las Vegas here and THREE of the dudes are playing Grey Knights. I'm new to the game and the Grey Knights (I picked them up because the 1st player there had them and I saw how awesome the Knights looked.)

But seriously. The Guard, Space Wolves and Maybe Dark Eldar are up for codexes this year from what I hear, and we have one guy in the store who plays Guard and one dude who plays Wolves but has at least two other armies. You would think that GW would know just from sales figures roughly how popular the various armies are... are we just an oddity out here or are there a lot more Grey Knights out there than people think?

Space wolves (not that they are not awesome) really do not need an update quite yet. The New space marine codex just came out, no more space marine variations for now please. AS for the Dark Eldar (which is for sure) They need it. The Guard, also does not need it.

GK and WH and Ordo Xenos NEED a new codex... BADLY

at one club that I play at sometimes there are 5 GK players, at the other there is only 1. My brother also plays GK.

Well the ones you mentioned getting the dex update are actually a wide range of players.. the Dark Eldar do need an update baly and the Wolves are at times over powered to their other marine counterparts and are still very good in overall play. I am a DH player owning about 3k of models. Our lists are so one trick pony these days to remain compettive.. I play them because they look great, are fun to paint, and take skill to master and play well. I have a Dark angel and Dark eldar army as well. I dont enjoy winning with them as much as i do the DH. I came in second in a local RTT with DH and i was gimped 60 points because i bought gear to counter Chaos and never played any chaos.

You have to accept that with the DH you have few choices when it comes to competitive lists.. Generally its 2-3 Land Raiders and all the PAGK you can afford because they are theonly elite troops you have.. I am a fan of some IST in a Rhino with Plasma guns. If you arent sure if youll like playing DH try building another army and ally in some GK until you get the feel for their strengths. Inquisitors are fun now that Deep Strike is alot safer than before more people do it and some mystics and HB and PC servitors can throw a real wrench in their plans.

Enjoy whatever you choose, in the end its your time and money spent. Get to know them and enjoy the fluff. There are some very cool variations you can play with them. Radical Inquisitors and Daemonhosts anyone... ? thats next on my list to get chewed up with lol.

Of the people in my local gaming club (maybe upwards of 20), I have by far the most DH stuff, with about 4800pts. I know of at least two other players who have at least enough to field small armies of GKs. Also, I know several other players who play Sisters (not that their codex is hurting at the moment).

Compare that to the one Dark Eldar player and the one Space Wolf player. Granted, there are lots of IG players, and several Necron players (another rumored codex coming down the line soon).

Honestly, I think some decently-priced plastic units, a new codex, and some honest-to-god effort on GW's part to promote an army that isn't Space Marines, and the Grey Knights could be quite popular. After all, they are fantastic looking, having amazing fluff, and can be quite effective on the battlefield. They also capture that undeniable coolness of power-armoured marines (not just in 40k, but starship troopers, halo, et al) without being subject to the boring sameness of being just like every other codex marine army out there.

I move around a lot, and so I get to see loads of different gaming clubs. When I go to GW games, the clubs tend to be large, and there are always a few GK players, though they tend not to be the hardcore regular gamers.

When there is no GW nearby, and I have to go to (inevitably sketchy) private clubs, I am always the only GK player there.

I see fewer SoB players, but also only at GW stores.

-Silent Requiem

My experience is similar to Silent Requiem's. I am the only GK player in the entire city as far as I can tell. We have three game stores (one devoted entirely to miniatures gaming), no GWs, and on the order of 50 40K gamers. I've only ever seen other people's GKs on the table during the Adepticon team tourney as part of a team (I was the only GK player at last year's 1850 pt Adepticon singles championship) and at the Chicago Battle Bunker.

Similarly, I only know of one Witch Hunters player where I live, though the WH were more prevalent than DH/GKs at both Adepticon and the Chicago-area GWs I've visited. I've seen more Dark Eldar players in just my locale than the combined number of Inquisitorial gamers everywhere else I've ever been.

:) Comically enough I've moved a bit too. So far I've played in 4 different gaming stores in two states and as of yet I am the only GK player I've met. That being said I've met upwards of 5-6 Sisters players. :)

Maybe I'm just the oddball as I've never been to a REAL GW store, I saw one once but I was driving by it at 1am :) .

=]D[=

I'm the only player in my greater gaming group. I always play the same 4 guys (my best pals), but once a year, we hold the "Mega 40k" where we invite friend's friends, etc... It a group of about 32 casual gamers (us "core" 5 are more radicals having over 60 000pts between ourselves!).

Well there's this guy who's got 20-something GKs and some kasrkins with an inquisitor. But it's all unpainted, not even primed and he bring them around every two years, so...

There's another SoB player, though. A nice guy who usually places high in painting score and first in sportsmanship, but low in victory points. He like to use an half SoB-Half Freak Show army, which explins his low scores.

Phil

I'm the only GK player near where I live (that I know of). I also am the only one to play Necrons, and there are a decent mix of every other army at the nearby shop. No one plays WH though (I may buy the codex to dip into them though).

I one of 2 consistent players I know of in my area. Here is the breakdown on others:

- One other consistent guy - he has about a billion points of Dark angels, but also has several thousand points of well painted GKs.

- One HS kid that inducts 5 GKTs into his guard army

- One Junior High Kid that plays GKs

- One guy who says he has 5K points of GK but I have never seen him at a store with a single model

- One guy the local GW says I should meet because he just picked up GKs

On the sisters side:

- One strong player whith a big sisters army, usually participates in tourneys, Ard boyz, etc. Doesn't always play sisters as he has several armies

- One HS kid who plays sisters

Generally I see lots of Orks, chaos, eldar and marines...a few Tau also....\

(edited because I forgot one)

Maybe I'm just the oddball as I've never been to a REAL GW store, I saw one once

They're not just a myth. They are out there...

I'm a part time Grey Knight player, most of my effort goes into my Dark Eldar, the Void Stalkers. I saw a Daemon Hunters player once, when they first came out... Other than that an arch nemesis marine/ork player sometimes uses a PAGK squad with his marines.

Sorry to be sounding like a lone voice.. But both the Wolves and the Dark Eldar outsell the GK's by an order of magnitude.. For whatever reason. This makes the incentive (from a business standpoint) to release them first (all 3 Codexes came out during the same period of time) a natural one.

The only hope *I* have is that when our Codex finally DOES come out. That it's up to the standards of all the 'current' Codexes and will be able to stand the test of time as it's likely we won't get another for a loooong time.

Space Marines and Guard and Chaos Marines SHOULD get their Codexes more frequently. I want GW to stay healthy and profitable and those 3 armies (not including DA, SW, BA, or any of the other SM chapters) outsell all the other armies in 40K combined.

Right, Wrong, or otherwise.. I want the business of GW to thrive.

Now... I question some of their OTHER decisions <coughbitzcough>..

But I understand this one.

-Dragons

In my area there are now three GW stores (I live near Seattle.. so lots of various cities) that I've dropped in.. I play at one every so often, recently was just for the Apocalypse stuff. I don't watch the tourney scene at all. I typically speaking am one of if not the only Inquisition player with an Inquisition army on the table. A couple people mention they have some models but I usually don't ever see them. I think I see Sisters a little more often, there might have been one or two unpainted Sisters armies I've seen. My couple of units of Sisters, and one unit of GK termies are usually all I saw for the Lucky 13's campaign, and I fielded them with pride being the awesome Inquisition! Oh wait.. there was one guy with a Sisters force for one of the games, but he kinda sucked :tu: So that makes 3 or 4 Sisters Armies, and no real pure GK armies I've seen to date in the last couple of years on a very haphazard viewing schedule. Personally, I actually like it that way. The regular Imperial Guard armies and Space Marine armies SHOULD outnumber Inquisition forces. It's fun to have the army no one knows what to expect with.

I'd say one of the issues which plague the Grey Knights is just their overall price. With their troop choices being quite expensive, it makes for difficult fielding of full armies.

I think the models are sick however and they make me want to start my own force. Didn't they just receive a new codex recently? (I've been off and on for a couple of years so it may have been quite some time ago).

I don't know of any GKT players where I am currently, but I am sure there are a few around.

For my part, I have DH bits and pieces for my marine army that I ally in, and if the new guard codex is solid, I might be more inclined to put together a DH army with some GK + Guard elements.

Though my 40K exposure has been limited so far to my local gaming club and a couple of tournies, I have yet to come across any DH armies let alone pure Grey Knight ones like my own. There was one Sisters army though at each of the tournies I went to. I kinda like being that rare army and like Spartans, I hope it doesn't get to the point where every fourth or fifth GW army case that cracks open has GK's poppin' out of them.

I quite fancied a challange (both gaming & painting) so ditched my Iron Hands and started up a nice Grey Knight/Death Korps force...

One of the staffers at the local GW played GK a while back and gave me some tips etc, but they seem a rare breed.

Plus there's only a few blisters of Power Armour GK's in the store...

I play GK as an allied force to my DA

I don't know any GK or SoB players near me, although theirs two DE and one SW

nearly all the remainder are C:SM players, minus a BA and a DA

the wave of C:SM is unstoppable ;)

-Simoleo

I play a full Ordo Malleus force, with Inquisitors, Stormtroopers and a good amount of Grey Knights. I am the only one to play them in my gaming club. However, most armies (besides Space Marines), only have a couple of people fielding them. I have run into about three or four other Grey Knights players at some of the tournaments that I have attended.

I'm building a Grey Knight army for an up coming tournament in March. I know of only 1 pure Knight player in the local area; however, many of the players in my area have at least one squad of GK Termies to allie as needed.
