WYSIWYG as it applies to multiple weapons configurations

In the codex, most chaos marines are automatically equipped with a bolter, a bolt pistol and a chainsword, and are able to use both weapons configurations (The bolter or the pistol and CCW) within a battle, even though generally, only one of these configurations is modelled on the figures. In this regard, the models are never "WYSIWYG" as they have useable weapons that aren't modelled on the figures.

How does this apply to upgrading weapons? What happens if an aspiring champ or a lord, is upgraded with combi weapon? If a champ with a bolter, bolt pistol and chainsword only needs to have the bolt pistol and chainsword modelled, does that mean that a champ with a pistol, combi weapon and chainsowrd does not need to show the combi weapon (which is an upgrade to it's bolter) on the model?

Usually the general concensus works thusly:

If it is standard equipment (BP/CC and bolter) not all options need to be modelled, however any upgrade weapons (ie: anything you have to pay for) MUST be shown on the model.

That's what I would have assumed, thanks! :)

How about a model with a powerfist and combi weapon? Show the powerfisted hand holding the weapon and the other hand on the trigger?

I think someone with powerfist is cool enough to hold bolter like small pistol ;) when you give power weapon and twin-linked bolter to your model - it looks like real champion.

Although, if your champion was using his powerfist to carry a combi weapon, he'd probably should remember to deactivate the fist, a weapon design to punch a hole through tanks would crumble a bolter like a paper cup ;)

Not to mention I have seen WAY more art showing SMs firing bolters one handed than two handed. It just looks cooler!

but ya, for the OP, For anything "non standard" get it on the mini somewhere. For normal stuff, mix it up, most of my CSMs have every comination of Bolter/CCW/BP/Dual BPs/Dual CCW etc, it just adds variety and makes the force look more "chaotic".

I like making a "shoulder sling" for the bigger stuff, so it looks like the bolter is just hanging at his hip and all he would have to do is reach down and grab it. Like what you see on modern SpecOps guys with their H&Ks.
