Hey Blar...sorry it took me so long to get this to ya.

Your paint is going on pretty smooth, but there's a lack of definition. I think you might be adding your layers a bit too thick...not that the paint itself is too thick, but the layers are, thus defeating what you're trying to do. The idea for non-black-black, is to alternate glazes of brown and blue...or green and purple...it doesn't really matter. For an Ultra, I'd probably stick with brown/blue. You want to build it a little slower, until the shadowed areas are "blackened". You can, if you wish, glaze in a little true black in just the deepest shadows and recesses, but it's really not necessary if you build your layers properly. Tru black also robs the shape of the appearance of having a shape. I tube-like object will reflect many colors, even if it's black. The way you have it now, you're going to have to fight against the black you've created to highlight up. This can be done, but it is challenging, and time consuming. The idea is to be able to smooth your highlights with the use of color...not just paint tones that increase in brightness...if that makes sense. When you start getting a good shadow going, keep your dark paints away from the highlight areas...that way, you can go back in with color, and increase the highlights.

I hope that helps...and like I said in the PM, I'll be doing a "NBB" article soon.

Thanks a lot Lunch. I guess the problem for me in this case is that I am actually using black to build up my base layer. This, as you have said, is making it more difficult to have true highlight effects. Without having to strip it and start again, what would you suggest so that i could get a more "natural" looking highlight?

Thanks again!

Hey Guys (and possibly gals),

Just a quick verbal (well text) update. I did a great trade with a friend on Warseer, and I got it in the mail yesterday. So, after a LOOONG while of sorting through all of the stuff that I received in my trade and I came to the (rather startling) conclusion that I am now in the possession of an entire battle company minus 1 dev squad and 1/2 a tac squad (that is all basic bare bones marines that is). So, needless to say, I have a lot of painting to do (and a lot of fixing and stripping of minis as well). There are also a few real jems in there (like most of the 3rd ed Marnius Calgar mini, and a classic tech marine and such).

So, any help on a quick way to paint blue effectively would be much appreciated.

Thanks a lot!

Hey all,

another quick update. I have gotten a little frustrated painting Cassius for the moment, so I have moved onto a quick project to keep me busy for a while till i get motivated to paint Cassius again.

So, here he is. The captian of the 3rd company of the Ultramarines

I made him using the old Calgar mini and a random power sword that I found lying around.

c&c much appreciated.

Thanks
