Chaos marine Queries

Recommended Posts

This is my first time on here and I have been out of playing from the hobby for a while and have just really started to get back into gaming and painting again, after reading the Rulebook and the Chaos Codex I have a few queries that I need a little help with as i want to get into tournament gaming again and WYSIWYG is making this more than a little hard.

1. Chaos Marines now come with both bolter and bolt pistol CCW, awesome but how do you get all that on one model without it looking ridiculous. :tu:

2. Obliterators - can I add what ever wpns I like, even if they arent in the options. (not planning on using a strange variety of weapons just got some cool modelling ideas. ;)

3. Extra Armour on land raiders/rhinos can this be internal or does it mean I have to go to Froge World.

4. Does it matter how big a deamon prince is or is it all about the base size?

5. Icons - can I just have one that does nothing?

6. Black Legion Marines do they have all silver edging on bodies and gold on shoulders/all gold edging/or just what I feel like at the time of pointing them lol.

Would appreciate some constructive comments as I am a little lost. ;)

You don't. The CSM box comes with a mix of bolter arms and BP/CCW arms.

2. Obliterators - can I add what ever wpns I like, even if they arent in the options. (not planning on using a strange variety of weapons just got some cool modelling ideas. :P

I'd say you can, because half the weapons on the Obliterator models are redundant now, anyway.

3. Extra Armour on land raiders/rhinos can this be internal or does it mean I have to go to Froge World.

In regards to extra armour, I don't think you have to model it.

4. Does it matter how big a deamon prince is or is it all about the base size?

I'd say DP's have to be at least 2x the height of a marine, model wise, and the base can be a 40mm or MC one, but not a 25mm one.

5. Icons - can I just have one that does nothing?

I'd say don't do this unless you wanna be Rules Lawyer chum.

6. Black Legion Marines do they have all silver edging on bodies and gold on shoulders/all gold edging/or just what I feel like at the time of pointing them lol.

In regards with tournaments, it doesn't matter how they're painted, but some tournies have minimum paint on a model policies.

Meh, never mind, B&C's a big place, it's easy to get lost ;)

Hope I helped ;)

Welcome to the forum, hope you find it as helpful as I have.

1 - You don't have to model them on the Marine. General rule, if the equipment comes with the model as standard, they don't have to be modelled on, example, grenades. Its only wargear thats bought for the model that has to be modelled. For example, standard Chaos Marine comes with a bolter, chainsword and bolt pistol, well you can just make him with just the bolt pistol and chainsword, or with just the bolter, he is still considered to have the other normal equipment. But, if you got a heavy bolter for him, you have to model the heavy bolter on him.

2 - Modelling weapons, anything goes, within reason of course. But the options in the army entry are the only ones you can use. iF you can to make him look like he has a missle launcher for an arm, fine, but you can't use it as such. The only weapons an Obliterator can use are energy based, as stated in the army list entry.

3 - You don't have to model extra armour, but its a nice touch to have. Most oppenents will accept it if you have an unconverted model and say it has extra armour. The only time it really might come into effect is at tournaments.

4 - Daemon Princes have to be on the large base, thats what matters. Daemon Princes are often bigger then the Chaos Marines they lead. But its the base size that matters.

5 - You can model an icon, and not attach a mark to it. In games term, he could count as just another marine, he just happens to be carrying a dead guy on a pole.

6 - Black Legion usually use the colour scheme you mentioned, though as long as the armour is black, it shouldn't matter what other details are on the armour. In the previous edition of the Chaos Codex, the Games-Workshop studio painted special units like Chosen where the helmets and trim were painted gold.

Hope that helps.

1. Basic equipment doesn't all have to be modelled on.

2. Go for it, but it uses the weapons in the army list.

3. Don't need to model it.

4. Base should be a 60mm+ one. Size, about GW's DP or bigger.

5. If you just want some guy carrying a cool pole, go for it.

6. Paint 'em how you want 'em.

Black Legion has been depicted with several 'correct' schemes in the past.

Last codex has some good artwork with it.

Personally i go for black and gold. My old BL's from when i started playing have one boot metallic. But all my newer models go for black and gold. With only a few little bits here and there boltgun metal.

1. You could have bolter marines with bayonets attached and pistols holstered?

2. Throw whatever weapons on them, just make sure you have at least one of their codex-weapons on them

3. Anything minimal will suffice for extra armour.

4. the larger base is a must and the model itself is gnerally expected to be larger than a normal marine, I'd say 1.5 times taller at least!

5. I guy carrying an icon is always characterful

6. I'd say any colour you like, just make sure that they're black ;)

For dealing with the 3 weapons on chaos marines, I set up my squads with a mix of stuff. Some guys holding just a bolter, some bp+cs, some bolter and chainsword, some bolter and bolt pistol. Pretty much evens out.

Oblits, model as you see fit. I lost the bits that came with my oblits, so all mine have extra bolt pistols, bolters, plasmaguns and chainswords sticking out.

Don't worry about extra armor, just remember to tell your opponent before the game.

Deamon princes really need to be modeled as Monsterous creatures rules for cover require 50% of the model to be covered. It would be really hard to make that work without a full sized model.

If you have an icon that doesn't do anything, tell your opponent before the game.

Paint your guys in a way that looks good to you.

Wow! Cheers for all the replys.

1. I have emailed GW to see if they can answer my query, especially in regard to tournaments.

2. After all the encouraging comments I have decied to model what the hell I like as long as they look cool, will put up some shots in WIP once I have got a little furhter with them.

3. Dropped all the Extra armour from my army, as most of it was on Rhinos and as someone pointed out to me, I have never had a need to use it on a rhino really.

4. I was going to be a bit cheeky as I have with my Eldar, as in the old Avator on a large base so he is the same size as any other figure hehe. But I have decied that a deamon prince of appropriate awesomeness is needed, Balrog wings, repositioned and with an uber axe, will put shots up in WIP soon.

5. I am considering daemons in my army with means that I need Icons so I have just gone for a few generic ones that dont do anything apart from being a focal point for summoned daemons. I like the idea of a funky deadguy on a pole. lol

6. Ok I have chatted to a few ppl about the colour scheme of BL, I have decied to go with gold edging on the pads and silver on the rest of the edging. Gold all round for elites.

Cheers guys you have really helped, now I just gotta get this army list right.

if its standard equipment its generally acknowledged you don't have to model it

2. Obliterators - can I add what ever weapons I like, even if they aren't in the options. (not planning on using a strange variety of weapons just got some cool modeling ideas. ;)

why not, it already is modeled with weapons it can't take, like assault cannons

3. Extra Armour on land raiders/rhinos can this be internal or does it mean I have to go to Forge World.

why can't you just glue tank tracks/jerry cans or plasticard sheets to it?

4. Does it matter how big a daemon prince is or is it all about the base size?

base size, although the base can usually be bigger with permission, and the size of the model still effects line of sight

5. Icons - can I just have one that does nothing?

of course

6. Black Legion Marines do they have all silver edging on bodies and gold on shoulders/all gold edging/or just what I feel like at the time of pointing them lol.

you can paint any model how YOU like

5. I am considering daemons in my army with means that I need Icons so I have just gone for a few generic ones that dont do anything apart from being a focal point for summoned daemons. I like the idea of a funky deadguy on a pole. lol

Wait, if I'm reading this correctly you want icons to summon daemons to without paying for them? You can't do that I'm afraid, if you want icons, you have to pay for them.

True enough. However, you could pay for a personal icon (usually an option for the unit champ) - that does let you summon demons (and DS termies etc) without having any other effect. Or theres the icon of chaos undivided, which has an effect, but a very "neutral" one. For Black Legion, the Icon of Chaos Undivided is quite common and fitting.

Woops, yeah read that again in the codex. It is OK though have decided against deamons at a 1500pt army as they just dont seem worjh the points.

Does anyone have a copy of last years or this years Grand Tournament Rules as I can find anyonline, might just be me tho.

Just to chime in here:

All my Word Bearers are 100% WYSIWYG (some even have MORE equipment than they paid for :o but that was before I discovered MAGNETS!!!). Its entirely possible, just use some imagination. I.e., true grit style bolter, chainsword in hand, pistols and grenades on belt; pistol and chainsword in hand, bolter on a chain on the shoulder, grenades on belt; bolter aiming with both hands, pistol and grenades on hip, combat knife horizontally under the backpack.

The only model in my army that isn`t 100% WYSIWYG is one of the icon bearers: icon in one hand, pistol in the other, knife and grenades on the belt. No bolter ON the model, but its modelled on the base with 2 bullet holes in it and an empty clip :P
