Karitas
Really nice work man. I look at stuff like this, then compare it to mine, and i realise what it is i do "wrong" - i put in hours of work smoothing transitions etc, then the result is too damn subtle to be visible. your layering is quite marked, but the overall reult is amazing. Kudos to you and many thanks for demonstrating something to me <_< Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/159672-wip-ultramarines-2nd-company/page/2/#findComment-1962390 Share on other sites
StraightSilver
Cheers Karitas, I must admit that I also used to spend ages and ages doing loads of wet blending and subtle highlights, but for gaming miniatures that can be soul destroying as it just takes too long. I think you can get away with having obvious highlights to a certain degree, and that's what I've gone for with this army mainly because I really want to get it finished (I am notorious for starting but never finishing anything). I would normally use 6 layers when low and highlighting (I have layered everything on these guys as blending would have taken too long, although blending may have been more suitable in places) but for this army I am sticking with 4, but am happy with the results. Ok so not much of an update at this point, just some photos I took to show what I am working on right now. So here we have my Land Speeders: http://i240.photobucket.com/albums/ff258/geekfilth/DSC00441.jpg http://i240.photobucket.com/albums/ff258/geekfilth/DSC00446.jpg http://i240.photobucket.com/albums/ff258/geekfilth/DSC00445.jpg http://i240.photobucket.com/albums/ff258/geekfilth/DSC00447.jpg Still got tonnes to do on this, and unfortunately one of them had a horrible accident last night when I dropped it and broke it, and I now cannot get the thing to glue back together.... DOH! A tiny bit more work on last month's Scouts: http://i240.photobucket.com/albums/ff258/geekfilth/DSC00439.jpg http://i240.photobucket.com/albums/ff258/geekfilth/DSC00440.jpg Really not a lot done here, just freehanded the Ultras Logos and stuck some squad markings on. And now for next month's painting (if I ever catch up...) http://i240.photobucket.com/albums/ff258/geekfilth/DSC00431.jpg http://i240.photobucket.com/albums/ff258/geekfilth/DSC00429.jpg Quite looking forward to painting these guys as they are nice and big! B) Cheers for looking. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/159672-wip-ultramarines-2nd-company/page/2/#findComment-1972375 Share on other sites
StraightSilver
Hey Guys, sorry for the bump, hope that's ok. I must admit that things have been a bit slow on the painting front, which is a shame as this challenge was meant to negate that. However having said that I have done more in the last 5 months than I would normally do in about 2 years, so it is sort of working. I really wanted to post up some finished additions to my Ultras, but unfortunately as we are also gaming once a month I find myself having to start new things to play with (the points value increases each month) which prevents me going back and finishing other things. So at the moment I have some progress on the Termis. These are almost done: http://i240.photobucket.com/albums/ff258/geekfilth/Picture005-2.jpg http://i240.photobucket.com/albums/ff258/geekfilth/Picture007-3.jpg http://i240.photobucket.com/albums/ff258/geekfilth/Picture008-3.jpg And a teeny, weeny bit of progress on the Speeder: http://i240.photobucket.com/albums/ff258/geekfilth/Picture004-3.jpg This guy was actually done very quickly last night, but I realise now that he was a bit rushed in places (in particular his arms) so I will touch him up a bit at a later date. One thing I have learnt though is that I need to be a bit braver and try som new techniques for speeding things up. I am getting to grips with the new washes which are making life a lot easier (especially on metallics) and need to experiment more with the foundation paints, but I also plan to start using an air brush to base coat soon so I will let you all know how that goes. Cheers for looking. :( Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/159672-wip-ultramarines-2nd-company/page/2/#findComment-1994211 Share on other sites

#13
I think the ultramarines title kept me from checking out this blog, but what a great blog it is. Really smooth painting, your minis really are high standard. StraightSilver
Cheers guys, I must admit that I was never a fan of Ultramarines, or even Marines in general but putting this army together has actually changed my opinion of them now. The idea was to push myself to see if I could assemble and finish a 1500pt army in 6 months, and I thought if I chose an army that I wasn't that keen on and do it then I could put the same effort into one I really wanted to do. But so far painting Marines has been quite rewarding. You don't need a huge amount of conversion work to field a viable army and the figures themselves are very flexible and forgiving when it comes to painting and assembly. And blue is a very easy colour to paint, although I am getting a bit bored of it now, although painting scouts seems to break up the monotony a bit and I have some Scout Bikers I want to add soon. And as for the land Speeder, I did manage to fix the broken one, only to have it fall apart again in transit to my last game, and then t top it all off I managed to break a tiny bit off the other one a couple of nights ago, which was frustrating as I barely touched it! Having said that they have fared no better in game than they have done in real life, getting blown from the sky every time I use them, so maybe I should model them in pieces on the base anyway! StraightSilver
Hi guys, Well once again I only have a small amount of progress to show you all, as I have been as rubbish as ever at keeping to deadlines, LOL! Chaplian Silkor
This army is so AWESOME!!! Really, I love it ;) A question though: how do you highlight your marines? I use a mix of Ultramarines Blue and Skull White, but it ain't as nice as yours. ;) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/159672-wip-ultramarines-2nd-company/page/2/#findComment-2017150 Share on other sites
