I Think I May Have Swayzed The Night Lords

After 9 years in the hobby a friend of mine is getting married, and is selling his armies off to raise money for the big day. Now last year he started a Vampire Counts army, along with some of the new plastic kits. Now I'm not really a Warhammer fan, but seeing some of the kits gave me an idea, using Ghouls as Lesser Daemons and the Varghulf as the Greater Daemon. Hear me out.

I've always been a fan of the Night Lords, mainly because their not raving maniacs, diseased monsters, addicted freaks or zealous maniacs, and that they can be so vastly different to other armies. I always liked that Night Lords never used the Daemons of the Greater Power, which was the main reason I started a small force with the 3.5 codex.

Now, I've started a new NL army, and just went over the rules about the Lesser Daemons, when a thought occured to me. Night Lords don't use Daemons as say the Word Bearers would, that is to summon Daemons from the Warp, but what if they used Daemons in a less conventional way, fear? Night Lords use fear to terrify the enemy, through the cutting of communications to the use of nuclear weapons to increase the fear. But, there are other ways to induce fear, some as traps, murder and gases.

Its the last means that my idea comes in. What if the Night Lords had spread a gas through an area, infecting the enemy with powerful hallucenations (sp?)? My idea is that the enemy starts to freak out, seeing daemons attacking them, when really their comrades have gone mad and attacking them. Rather then complicating the game with house rules, I'd use the Lesser Daemon rules, the summoning representing the unit freaking out.

As for the Ghouls/Daemons, I see them as something akin to the creatures that come after the villains from the film Ghost, dark, shadowy creatures, ready to pull soldiers to their doom. I'd trim down the hair, and try to convert them to look like their seeping out of the shadows.

As for the Varghulf, same idea, but I just happen to think it looks awesome.

Anyway, let me know what you think, its all helpful.

(also, I am not a newb, I've been playing 40k since '97)

How are you going to explain that if yu go against Necrons? Or Tyranids? Or marines with sealed power armor? The only armies this iwll work on are Tyranids Eldar, orks and some Guard armies.

You know you could just have the Night Lords summon some daemons, after all they see chaos as merely another tool to use.

Well, Tyranids and Necrons aren't a problem in my group, no one plays them :)

As for tournaments, I never go to them, if I ever do, its with my Dark Angels, so that'll never come up.

And as for Marines, remember that the Night Lords have over 10000 years to perfect fear and how to use. Don't forget that Night Haunter once said

"Space Marines fear no evil, for we are fear incarnate". Maybe theres a quality or an element in their shadowy realm, maybe the toxins they use is exceptionally virulent. The point is, it adds an element to a game, and thats exactly what it is, a game.

Well then how can hallucinations hold objectives?

I use 4 squads of Night Lords as troops, and only going to add one squad of summoned daemons.

The point is, it adds character to the army. It adds an extra dimension to a game.

If you want to be pedantic, and you are Gree, you could reason it as the enemy is so terryified, they can't stop the Night Lords moving in, or doing the work for them. In a game where objectives have to destroyed particularly deranged could run towards a power generator (objective) and destroy it. Fear and Terror make people do terrible things.

Or would you rather I go against the fluff and have the Night Lords purposely summon Daemons from the Warp? What would you like?!? Bloodletter?! Daemonettes?!

The point is, its my army, my storyline, I'm not forcing it on you.

Dude relax.

I never said anything about forcing it on anybody. It just seems to me personally that it's just weird. If you want to run it then more power to you.

As for the daemons, it is fluffy for Night Lords to enslave daemons, codex 3.5

I actually think this is a fantastic idea. It's not suited to every army, no - but I could easily overlook that. The idea of packs of 'nightmares' causing trouble is a fantastic one. It's got plenty of twisted possibilities - you charge into combat with a squad of Guardsmen and tell their player that all the wounds you cause on the Guards squad are actually self-inflicted in their sheer incomprehensible terror... :D
