Honda
How many Dreads does your army have now? 4? 5? Actually, ;) , he'll be #6. I'll plan to stay there unless Mr. Black Templars should ever materialize. I think the BT dread is possibly the coolest looking one ever. Between the helmet and all the heraldry and swords...I could nearly swoon. However, the chappie dread is expected to instill fear in the opponent. He'll always arrive in a drop pod and with two heavy flamers shoot provide hours upon hours of BBQ fun. Then his Ginsu DCCW's will artfully arrange what is left. Since he'll be my Ironclad, I think the 13 frontal armor will be very nice as well. Cheers,

Honda
Ok, a very fast week in Real Life . Hence I only got to the base metal work, at least for the silver tones. There's going to be a lot of bronze on this guy and some of that should show up next week. So some basic shots: http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d187/hkowabunga/Apocalypse%20Lords/Dreadnoughts/040409001.jpg http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d187/hkowabunga/Apocalypse%20Lords/Dreadnoughts/040409002.jpg http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d187/hkowabunga/Apocalypse%20Lords/Dreadnoughts/040409003.jpg A "lettuce" chopper, as my youngest likes to refer to them... http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d187/hkowabunga/Apocalypse%20Lords/Dreadnoughts/040409005.jpg There's actually three layers of highlighting on the blade edges, but it doesn't look like it came out that well, so some touch ups will be needed. Here's the other arms http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d187/hkowabunga/Apocalypse%20Lords/Dreadnoughts/040409007.jpg So not a whole lot of progress, but then often times a project moves on by little incremental steps such as these. The most important point I've found out for myself is to quote Dorie, "Just keep swimming". Note, there is absolutely no ink or washes on this yet, that will come at a later stage after I get some of the other base layers on. So there's plenty more to come. And now, the Space Marine Puppet Theatre... http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d187/hkowabunga/Apocalypse%20Lords/Dreadnoughts/Comic02-1.jpg http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d187/hkowabunga/Apocalypse%20Lords/Dreadnoughts/Comic02-2.jpg http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d187/hkowabunga/Apocalypse%20Lords/Dreadnoughts/Comic02-3.jpg http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d187/hkowabunga/Apocalypse%20Lords/Dreadnoughts/Comic02-4.jpg Until next time... Honda
<Cue Iggy Pops "Real Wild Child"> Well I'm just outa school Like I'm real real cool Gotta dance like a fool Got the message that I gotta be A wild one Ooh yeah I'm a wild one Gotta break it loose Gonna keep 'em movin' wild Gonna keep a swingin' baby I'm a real wild child Gonna met all muh friends Gonna have ourself a ball Gonna tell my friends Gonna tell them all That I'm a wild one Ooh yeah I'm a wild one Gotta break it loose Gonna keep 'em movin' wild Gonna keep a swingin' baby I'm a real wild child What do you do when you get a weird idea? Well, follow it to its conclusion of course! :) So, I've had this oddball idea for a Culexus assassin and I've been stewing on it for a bit...and it probably would have stayed in the stew if the new IG Codex had not come out. What's that got to do with this forum you ask? Well, if you aren't aware of it now, you probably will soon enough. The IG have this new unit called a Psyker Battle Squad (PBS). I know, you're wondering how long this post will last before it get's melta'd, but hang on, I'm getting to my point. So tactically, the idea is that the IG take this new PBS and do all sorts of miraculous things, usually to their opponents. I got to thinking, if they're going to bring psykers, maybe I should look into bringing a Culexus every now and then and just see if that puts people on the back foot. Seemed like a good idea. However, in order to bring one, you have to have one. Now, I have to admit that although the artwork of Culexus assassins has always been pretty cool looking, I have been less than enthralled with the head of the models. So originally, I was going to put a new head on the old body...but then I got this idea...plus I already had all the bits. So...<see, I told you I'd get to the point eventually>... The original idea started when I was looking at some old Dark Eldar sprues I have and I thought that with a moderate amount of modeling, those bodies could be turned into something interesting. As poses go, they are fairly static, but in a sense, that gives me the freedom to do a little of what I call plastic sculpting. http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d187/hkowabunga/Apocalypse%20Lords/Other%20Characters/050909011.jpg http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d187/hkowabunga/Apocalypse%20Lords/Other%20Characters/050909013.jpg So I got to this point after bisecting the legs, removing a bit from the middle section so I could bring the legs together. I also slimmed down the thighs and the gluts. I also smoothed out a lot of the "pointy" stuff on the upper torso to make it look less like DE and flattened the chest a bit. So far so good. I didn't have a clear vision of the head just yet, but I can see it coming together. http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d187/hkowabunga/Apocalypse%20Lords/Other%20Characters/050909035.jpg So this is where it stood after I got the arms together. Still not too sure about the head, but hey, it'll come together. http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d187/hkowabunga/Apocalypse%20Lords/Other%20Characters/050909041.jpg http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d187/hkowabunga/Apocalypse%20Lords/Other%20Characters/050909042.jpg Now I have the arms attached and I've started filling in some of the gaps. I've decided to give her a mirrored facemask. I've also decided that I am going to give her a fair amount of hair as she needs some balance in that area. I'm still working on which way I am going to go on her body suit. I am pretty certain that the flails that represent her hands will be glowing at the ends, much like a power weapon looks. http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d187/hkowabunga/Apocalypse%20Lords/Other%20Characters/050909044.jpg This is her base. I will pose her so that she is slightly floating above the highest column. http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d187/hkowabunga/Apocalypse%20Lords/Other%20Characters/050909045.jpg http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d187/hkowabunga/Apocalypse%20Lords/Other%20Characters/050909046.jpg Her name is Void. Honda
what are those green things on the base? We had a plastic clothes hanger that broke and I looked at it for a bit and thought "why not?" I'm always looking for interesting bits to add to my bases. :) Are you going to have eye holes in the mask or just solid? I'm going to go with solid. I'm leaning towards the theory that she doesn't need eyes to see. Cheers,
Honda
Okey dokey, "Void" has passed the construction phase, been primed, and will undergo painting beginning tomorrow morning, all things being equal. I like how she turned out even though her hair doesn't hang naturally. I'm putting that off to the fact that she's a Culexus, isn't natural anyway, so therefore her hair does funny things. Maybe she just experiences unnaturally heavy levels of static cling. I don't know, use what works best for you. Full shots http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d187/hkowabunga/Apocalypse%20Lords/Other%20Characters/052209022.jpg http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d187/hkowabunga/Apocalypse%20Lords/Other%20Characters/052209042.jpg Some close ups http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d187/hkowabunga/Apocalypse%20Lords/Other%20Characters/052209034.jpg http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d187/hkowabunga/Apocalypse%20Lords/Other%20Characters/052209035.jpg http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d187/hkowabunga/Apocalypse%20Lords/Other%20Characters/052209036.jpg http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d187/hkowabunga/Apocalypse%20Lords/Other%20Characters/052209037.jpg I envision that she will be mostly purple, reddish hair, and her "fingers" will end up with a power weapon glowey blue effect on the ends. We'll see how close I get to that once the color starts showing up. As always, C&C is greatly appreciated, especially on how she is mounted. As it stands now, I can have her floating above the columns or have her tippy toes touching. I'm kind of thinking of her floating a short distance above the columns, but I'd be interested in what you guys/gals think. Cheers,
Kikunosuke
That assassin is beginning to look very delicious. My opinion is that she looks better tippy-toeing the column; like she's in the midst of leaping off to pounce on her victim.
Honda
Domo Kiko! Here's a quick paint-in-progress photo to cap off the week. It is my intention that her scheme come across dark and moody. Although it isn't showing very well (blame the photographer I say), the highlights on her suit are understated so that she doesn't just pop out like some comic book superheroine. I also prefer a more muted red hair vs. super bright. I will be muting the mask as well, though it does need some sort of special effects. http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d187/hkowabunga/Apocalypse%20Lords/Other%20Characters/052309005.jpg I have started the effects on her hands by darkening them with black wash, then working blue wash up a bit. It is my intent to transition the tinted metallics to the power weapon effects at the tips. Anyway, she is well on her way. I look forward to introducing her to Eldrad and other heretics (*cough, Psychic Battle Squads, cough*) in the not too distant future. In Apocalypse games, I may even transport her in her own Valkyrie. From a cinematic perspective, it seems like it would pretty cool to have the Valk land, the back ramp slowly drop down while she floats out and wreaks havoc. Kikunosuke
Seriously Honda; that assassin is looking real good after a paint-up. I especially love the mask & I think you chose the right colour scheme for her. I can picture her giving Eldrad's xenos heiny a really good spanking with those power flails. Just curious though; how are you explaining Void's ability to float?
Honda
This short exercise shall be duly labeled, "Filling in the gaps". Why you ask? Because it appears that from time to time Honda has a bit of trouble counting. After the Death Rain Phase I effort, I somehow ended up with three extra flamers, but short three bolters for my tactical squads. Since I mostly play with friends, I've just been using the flamers as "combi-flamers that 'ave used up their fuel", i.e. bolters. However, in the interest of WYSIWYG and the fact that I have a few ideas for some models that are just there to add character and possibly gain me a couple of "coolness" points, I shall endeavor to address my gaps...er, toy-wise. So the first is a returned Death Watch veteran, fielding what hopefully resembles a Stalker pattern sniper bolter. He'll just represent a bolter, but hopefully in a "cooler" way. The pose should end up close to Telion, though I think he will be looking over his left shoulder...hunting. I've cut up the arms a bit and will have to fiddle with them, then GS the gaps (there's that "word" again). http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d187/hkowabunga/Apocalypse%20Lords/Tacticals/062209064.jpg And here's the WIP of the Stalker bolter http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d187/hkowabunga/Apocalypse%20Lords/Tacticals/062209066.jpg http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d187/hkowabunga/Apocalypse%20Lords/Tacticals/062209065.jpg The green bipod piece is a Tamiya 1/35th scale tripod for a .50 caliber machine gun cut down. The box I have contains 3 or 4 more of these in case I want to make any more. It seems to fit the bill so far, but is missing a stock at the back. I tried a stock from an IG lasgun, but it looked too puny, so I think what I'll end up doing is GSing one after I get the arms situated. Thoughts and ideas on that would be appreciated. Now for this next bit...well, what can I say? Far be it for me to ever endorse anything "heretical", but I saw this bike while out with the family for some gelato and said, "Night Lords!". My oldest son said, "Yeah" and my wife said, "Huh?" To which I replied, "Never mind, just give me the camera". Anyway, after looking at this and looking at the GW version, let me ask you Night Lords players? Which would you rather have your Lord riding? http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d187/hkowabunga/Apocalypse%20Lords/Tacticals/062209062.jpg http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d187/hkowabunga/Apocalypse%20Lords/Tacticals/062209059.jpg http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d187/hkowabunga/Apocalypse%20Lords/Tacticals/062209060.jpg http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d187/hkowabunga/Apocalypse%20Lords/Tacticals/062209061.jpg "Something wicked this way comes..." indeed. Honda
Ok, a quick mid-week (well it was supposed to be mid-week :) ) update. Below are "Amigos" two and three. Amigo Dos is in a fairly stock firing position, but I will be adding this crusader shield (guess from where? :) ). I'm still deciding on the level of ornamentation to put on the shield and whether that should be GS or just painted on. At a minimum, it will have the omega symbol and be split white/black per my color scheme. http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d187/hkowabunga/Apocalypse%20Lords/Tacticals/062609006.jpg Amigo Tres is shaping up well, though I still have a ways to go on him. The idea behind his pose is that he is advancing, still shooting, but pulling out his sword (which will be an artifact Samurai sword...or as close as I can get it) in preparation of getting up close and personal. http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d187/hkowabunga/Apocalypse%20Lords/Tacticals/062609007.jpg The blade will be crafted from an easily identifiable material and I'll come up with something for the tsuba (guard) as well. I like this plastic because it seems to be stiff, but workable. Also, the price is right. http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d187/hkowabunga/Apocalypse%20Lords/Tacticals/062609008.jpg And here is Amigo Tres posed with his arm on using the ever popular Pink Tac http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d187/hkowabunga/Apocalypse%20Lords/Tacticals/062609010.jpg With the arm in this position, the blade will be forward and slightly up. I'm not quite convinced that this is the way to go, but I've tried blade down and blade higher, but visually, they don't seem to work as well as this position. Any thoughts you have on this would be greatly appreciated. Amigo Uno hasn't progressed as much as it is looking like I will need to cut the left hand some and re-position so that he can hold the Stalker bolter in a reasonable pose. All I can say is that for a quick three-hit exercise, adding some character has certainly added to the timeline. C&C greatly appreciated! Honda
Ok, a quick update on the Three Amigos http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d187/hkowabunga/Apocalypse%20Lords/Tacticals/070409022.jpg http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d187/hkowabunga/Apocalypse%20Lords/Tacticals/070409023.jpg Returned Death Watch veteran http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d187/hkowabunga/Apocalypse%20Lords/Tacticals/070409027.jpg http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d187/hkowabunga/Apocalypse%20Lords/Tacticals/070409028.jpg I started off trying to gs an Omega symbol where the medallion is now and I just couldn't get the putty to stick. So, I pulled it off, applied it as you see and there we are. The shield will still be vertically bisected white/black, but all the gs will be my usual bronze effect. http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d187/hkowabunga/Apocalypse%20Lords/Tacticals/070409031.jpg After this supposedly brief exercise, I was amazed at how much suction I create when working with greenstuff. Just pitiful. My opportunities for improving my gs-fu seem virtually limitless. Anyway, enough self-flagellation, I'll do better next time. So these guys are ready for priming, but before I do that, I am coming to the conclusion that I need another tactical squad, so I'm going to jump on that real quick and then paint them, plus these three in time for BoLSCon in August. I should be able to pull that off. Cheers,
Honda
Ok, if you've been on Amicus (the board), then you may have seen a discussion on Scout Hit squads. If not, a SHS consists of a Landspeeder Storm and 5 scouts kitted out for some HtH work (i.e. shotguns + CCW). The key to the unit is to take out vulnerable units that have a high value. In the configuration I am working on, I see this unit as something that triggers an Alpha Strike on a vulnerable point in the opponent's lineup. It can also be used to contest or claim an objective. It is not intended to be a game winner all by itself, but it should help make other parts of my list more effective, or use its mobility to get that one out of the way objective. I guess we'll see. On the other hand, I also saw this as a unit with huge coolness and as is often the case on this board, one thing will lead to another. So here is the beginning of this little exercise. Five scouts. I decided to put ninja type headgear on them to enhance the "assassin" feel. I also went out on a limb regarding the combi-flamer that the Sgt wields. It serves its purpose, but I'm not sold on it. It seems a bit bulky to me. Anyway, here are some pics. I apologize upfront on their quality, but our camera is just acting quite strange and I'm not sure what is going on. You should get the idea of what I am trying to accomplish. Also, they will be done up in a dark grey/black scheme that probably wouldn't get me a Golden Demon, but then, my chances of getting one of those anyway are statistically not measurable, so no worries there. :P Since the pics are a little fuzzy, I won't burden you with multiple angles on every figure, just enough to get the idea across. Troopers http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d187/hkowabunga/Apocalypse%20Lords/Scouts/083109001.jpg http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d187/hkowabunga/Apocalypse%20Lords/Scouts/083109006.jpg http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d187/hkowabunga/Apocalypse%20Lords/Scouts/083109007.jpg http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d187/hkowabunga/Apocalypse%20Lords/Scouts/083109008.jpg http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d187/hkowabunga/Apocalypse%20Lords/Scouts/083109010.jpg Sgt. http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d187/hkowabunga/Apocalypse%20Lords/Scouts/083109003.jpg http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d187/hkowabunga/Apocalypse%20Lords/Scouts/083109004.jpg They have been primed and I've started adding some dark washes to soften the black (using Scorched Brown + Black washes) and we'll see where that leads us. Also, I've acquired my LS Storm, so that will get on the bench before too long. Cheers,

Honda
So, here is Pt. II of the Black Eagle Team WIP, their Landspeeder Storm. I got to use the team in a game this week and even though I had to proxy the storm with a regular LS and I didn't get an optimal attack, that -2 on leadership really helps to get someone to run. I shall be investigating using them in 1-2 punches in the future. Anyway, here are the shots of the empty vehicle http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d187/hkowabunga/Apocalypse%20Lords/Landspeeders/091609011.jpg http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d187/hkowabunga/Apocalypse%20Lords/Landspeeders/091609012.jpg And here it is, loaded up for bear http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d187/hkowabunga/Apocalypse%20Lords/Landspeeders/091609015.jpg http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d187/hkowabunga/Apocalypse%20Lords/Landspeeders/091609016.jpg http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d187/hkowabunga/Apocalypse%20Lords/Landspeeders/091609020.jpg The kit is rather enjoyable to put together, especially when compared to the original LS kit. If you are wondering about it, I'd say go for it. There are only a couple of fiddly bits in the constructure process and for Heaven's sake, do attach the dashboard to the chassis bottom before you glue the nose on. It seems obvious now, looking at the directions, but I put the nose on first and had quite a time getting the dash in there. I eventually ended up cutting it into two pieces, and gluing them in that way. Also, if it is your intention to paint the passengers/pilot separately and then place them in the vehicle (I am), then you will note that the pilot's feet are too large to put him in position, so I had to chop off his feet at the ankles. It's tough going, but I needed a reason to have a pilot called Stumpy. I also decided to use magnets on Trooper E (hanging from the zip line) so that I can detach him when it's time to put the speeder away. I kept trying to figure out ways to strengthen him without ruining the lines, but in the end I settled on making him detachable. All the other troopers are protected enough by the structure of the speeder that they shouldn't have a problem with moderate handling. Everyone is getting primed atthe moment and I am looking forward to getting some paint on them. There's quite a bit of detail on the Storm. And now, the next installment of The Space Marine Puppet Theatre... http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d187/hkowabunga/Apocalypse%20Lords/Landspeeders/ComicRun09-39.jpg Cheers,
