Naming your Tanks

I just found recently that I have a problem in saying my opponent what I have in my rhinos.

My solution is to call my tanks by name and put that in Army list...

My name for tanks

Sola Fide

Pax Mortis

Vae Victis (pic below)

Anybody else give their tank a painted name?

Those nice little scrolls come on the Rhino sprue for a reason I think! I cheat and use a pen to write the name on :P

Even though I'm a biased treadhead, I don't see why you wouldn't name your vehicles - how else would you keep track of their glorious exploits on the battlefield? If I can't think of a name they remain nameless until I hit on a good name or they earn one in battle - you can't just give any old name to your precious children!

So share those names then :P

Cool names all!!

Im currently painting my first GK-GHLR.. after reading this thread i decided to add a Insignum Valoris (those small shields with heraldy) on top of the TwL HvyBolters.

Not completly finished yet but this how it looks.. (not greatest quality on pic either..)

White is for the imperiums light amongst the universe, the Inquisitorial =I= and 666 on top displays the bond between the Ordo Malleus and the Chapter.

Red is for the bloody sacrefices made by the Grey Knights, and the skull stands for the death of their enemies!

Also if you have noticed the waves on the top hatch doors, I made those in remembrance of Silent Requiems Tactica (water warrior).. thought it would be a nice thing to do since it was his fault that i ended up painting the damn thing anyway haha!

Vae Victus
cough cough.. Uriel Ventris..cough cough :D

Actually no BL inspiration in Vae Victis case - but Pax Mortis name was take from "Mechanicum" novel. Lots of cool latin name there...

In "Titanicus" there is a warlord titan named "Dominatus Victrix". Could always look in that book, some awe inspiring names there.

cool paint job

I name all my tanks... Sentinels don't have names though.

Of course, at the moment I only have a pair of tanks..

A Chimera named "Missy" (Imperial Guard Colonel's ride)

A Land Raider named "Pallas Athena" (WH Inquisitor Lady ride)

in terms of fluff I have already named Repressors for my Inquisitorial Stormtroopers... they will be the "Van Helsing" and the "Belmont"

Valkyries (prenamed in fluff again) for the Cadian 84th are "Lenneth" "Silmeria" and "Hrist"

...

Then a scratch built Warhound Titan named "Harvestor of Sorrow" from the Legio Metallica :)

I've too many vehicles to bore people with all the names, so here's my "most notables":

Nigellus - Rhino, named after the brother that gave it to me. A stalwart on the front lines!

Nex Mortis and Malus Deus - Land Raiders. No need to say no more...

Special mention to Annihilatum the Land Speeder, remained nameless for some time before I realised that the huge swathes of foes it cut down was a good enough hint for a name :P

The cool thing about 40k is that it's bastardised Latin (well, I guess you could say that in many thousands of years Latin would change quite a bit) so you can tweak it to get names that sound cool.

I named all my stuff (infantry included), all GK related. My infantry are all named after the moons of Saturn. Depending on what you consider a "moon", you end up with ~50 moons. All their names are inscribed on their shoulder pads. Inquisitors are Icthus & Logos.

On the vehicle front:

Dreads are named after Saturn, Titan, and a variation of my Grand Master's name (Dread=Japetus). Fluff is the old GM is mortally wounded, put into a sarcophagus and the new protoge takes up his mantle (Current GM=Iapetus).

Haven't worked out names for all my Inquisitorial rhinos (they are still WIP), but I will come up with something..."Gloriously Expendable Meat Shield for the Holy Grey Knights" would just take to long too write :P

I have 2 completed LRs and working on a 3rd (redeemer), they are all named after Mandulis: Mandulis' Flame, Mandulis' Rage, Mandulis' Light, etc. I have gone back and forth and repainted some of the LR names trying to work out which primary weapon is best represented by the descriptive word after Mandulis' name.

I have one superheavy currently completed, an inquisitorial blaneblade named "Daemonbane". Rather than painting, I took a razor blade to all of the script text decals in the BB kit and arranged them to spell the name. As I add more superheavies (please, please plastic thunderhawk :P) - I am going to continue the "Daemon..." theme.

I think it is a great idea, adding individualized fluff to your army always makes it more fun for me personally. Even more fun when you get to play against others that take the same level of attention and thought to their army.
