Pig Of Sparta
While I was painting my last project I made use of the painting guide in this month's White Dwarf, and couldn't help but notice in the montage of photos at the start of the article the scarred face of the mkII veterans seargent. A few frustrating hours on Ebay and serval days pacing in front of the letter box saw me become the proud owner of said mini. While I was waiting for the mini to arrive I happened to notive the pose of one of the vanguard marines looked like it might match the facial expression of the veteran sarge. One trip to my dad's to borrow a razor saw later I had everything I needed to get started. Bearing in mind that my green stuffing skills a still relatively low, and I'd been a little over-zealous with the saw I knew I had my work cut out. Still, if you believe you can do it, sometimes you can: http://i347.photobucket.com/albums/p456/pigofsparta/sargefront.jpg this is the arm that will be going on the reconstructed right shoulder: http://i347.photobucket.com/albums/p456/pigofsparta/sargearm.jpg Then while I was sitting around moping about having nothing to do I came upon the idea of putting the power fist that came with the veteran sarge to good use. Pinching a couple of bits from my brother I came up with this: http://i347.photobucket.com/albums/p456/pigofsparta/captainfront.jpg with this arm going on: http://i347.photobucket.com/albums/p456/pigofsparta/captainarm.jpg once all the g/s is dry I'll post assembled pictures, in the mean time please feel free to comment or criticise ;) James Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/160026-sternguard-squad-and-captain/ Share on other sites

Pig Of Sparta
Thanks S.O.N hopefully I'll have more done tomorrow, or possibly later tonight, depending how lucky I am :D Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/160026-sternguard-squad-and-captain/#findComment-1877282 Share on other sites
Pig Of Sparta
Well I guess apart from Son of Nocturne nobody really likes them ;). When I was checking on the green stuff earlier on I noticed I'd skimmed away some of the wreath on his chest, so I'll be removing the rest of it and probably the skull as well. I might try giving thim a mark iv chest plate a la Red Scorpion marines to make him look a bit more like a veteran, and to cover my ham fisted cutting ;) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/160026-sternguard-squad-and-captain/#findComment-1877608 Share on other sites
War Angel
theres a lack of comments on this board lately, that dosnt mean people dont like it, i think. on youre first model did you plan to make the GS look like soft armor with the ridge's or is that part hidden when the arm is attached? maybe you didnt notice it. also, what are you going to put on the base? that one models rocking back on his heals. good job with the GS on the left arm, that one looks very good in comparision to the right arm Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/160026-sternguard-squad-and-captain/#findComment-1877822 Share on other sites
Sir Clausel
I must agree with War angel here. Theres not that many comments around here. But I like your stuff :nuke: But I must say you should not remove the rest of the wreath! Im sure you can GS it back the way it was. Its such a small thing that you can spend around 20 mins to fix Im sure  Love the conversion on the captain. Simple yet effective. War Angel
oh no, i didnt notice you said you would remove it, Dont! even if redoing the rest seems to hard, at least cut the losses and go for battle damage, dont remove the entire thing! typicly, i find that alot of people tend to focus on there own post's rather then comment on others, i guess some people just want to see the art so they can use it for themselfs? RazakelXIII
Well, I'm liking them so far (you loyalist scum). As War Angel said, keep the wreath battle-damaged, it looks cooler that way. Never figured out how they always stay so bloody pristine in the heat of combat anyway. Truly, grimdark is what we love. ;) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/160026-sternguard-squad-and-captain/#findComment-1877985 Share on other sites
War Angel
Never figured out how they always stay so bloody pristine in the heat of combat anyway. not to get off topic, but i do belive it has to do with the fact that people get so scared they panic and dont ever hit them. Pig Of Sparta
Thanks for the responses guys, replies really do seem a little thin on the ground just now :). As promised I have photos of the two mini's assembled now. They'll be joined by the rest of the Sternguard squad and a rhino (will become a razorback once I buy the bits I need) once they've finished drying from being paint stripped. All I need to do is get some spray undercoat and I'll be off :). Veteran Sarge: http://i347.photobucket.com/albums/p456/pigofsparta/sargebuilt.jpg As you can see from the photo I've left the wreath on the chest damaged :) but I have attempted to repair the damage I did to the facial scarring, hopefully they'll paint up alright . Captain: http://i347.photobucket.com/albums/p456/pigofsparta/captainbuilt.jpg I'm thinking of doing them as Sons of Orar, but I'm not 100% sure just now. This will lead to my army (when I finally get around to painting the rest of it) beING made up of several disparate chapters of marines, but I figure that's ok as I can just come up with some fluff along the lines of it being a joint strike force assembled from several chapters who at the close of the 41st millenium are hard pushed to respond in force to every plea for aid, hence they send what they can spare at the time.... well it might work :) Anyways, hopefully I'll have the rhino and other veterans up in short order, but in the meantime feel free to comment or criticise as usual, James Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/160026-sternguard-squad-and-captain/#findComment-1878689 Share on other sites
son of nocturne
Spot on mate, glad that you left the wreath on the chest, looks good with it! You could even paint it up as battle damage! The fluff you came up with sounds good, but if i remember your TS captain then the red will really suit these minis! Keep it up bud! S.O.N. Badaab
Hey PoS, Excellent subtle conversion work... the best conversions usually are in this vein. Hopefully your painting will make these models really your own, and, if you're lucky, most people won't even notice they're conversions! I love the veteran sergeant, and may 'appropriate' the model (or a variant of it) myself. As for the captain, my only advice would be to raise the power fist a little so it looks as though he's shaking it in a more menacing manner. I think it'd really fit the facial expression on the head you've chosen. I look forward to seeing these completed. -Joe Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/160026-sternguard-squad-and-captain/#findComment-1878718 Share on other sites
Pig Of Sparta
@son of nocturne: cheers mate, I'm moving more and more towards Sons of Orar. Was thinking of using a couple of the drop pod ultramarine icons suitably trimmed and turned upside-down for the chapter markings on the rhino/razorback. As soon as I get my hands on a can of skull white these guys will be a go. @Badaab: Thanks, they both really were those flash of inspiration conversions you get when you see some mini's and bits and think "I know, I'll just..." so feel free to appropriate the sarge's pose. I must warn you though, the cuts for the arms aren't the easiest in the world, mainly due to the positions of the shoulder pads. If you're confident with greenstuff then it should be no trouble for you . Unfortunately the rhino is still in pieces at the moment as it's still a little paint stained (damned undercoat), I'm hoping when I get paid next week that I'll be able to get some more dettol and give it another wee soak to clean it up a bit better. Photos will be along as soon as I get that done. In the mean time here's a group shot of the Sternguard squad, it's not the best but it gives me something to tick off their completion on and shows how the sarge looks with the rest of his brothers  Sternguard: http://i347.photobucket.com/albums/p456/pigofsparta/Sternguard.jpg Hopefully I'll have an update on my progress soon, James Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/160026-sternguard-squad-and-captain/#findComment-1879060 Share on other sites

Pig Of Sparta
OK so not a real update I'm afraid, but I've made the executive decision to undercoat 'em all by hand with Chaos Black because it'll save time and I'll be using Mechrite Red for the armour basecoat and Space Wolves Grey for the white bascecoat. Beats paying extortionate amounts for parking or postage :). konskrypt
Why not put a bullet hole where the damaged part of the chest eagle is? Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/160026-sternguard-squad-and-captain/#findComment-1880355 Share on other sites
Pig Of Sparta
Progress has not been that great these last few days, work and real life stuff have conspired to ensure that I've not had much time to paint, but 3 of the veterans are now undercoated, I'm hoping to get the other 2 done this evening. Photo updates will be coming as soon as I have something to show. @konskrypt: Thanks for the idea, I did think about it, but upon undercoating the sarge I noticed that my G/S work on reconstructing his shoulder wasn't as perfect as I thought it was, the slightly rough surface coupled with the sheared off wreath makes it look as though he might've survivived a plasma hit or been flamed. son of nocturne
Gaah! Damn real life! :D Have to say because of your exelent conversions i got out my old metals and the oven cleaner (my girlfriend was not amused as i used a whole can!) and did some conversions as well! Now start ignoring real life and get those minis painted! :) S.O.N. Pig Of Sparta
Ha Ha, if only it was that easy :) I've managed to get another undercoated, so that just leaves one to go and then the basecoating shall begin! I know exactly what you mean about the paint stripping issue, my girlfriend doesn't like me when I get the bottle of Dettol out...I look forward to seeing your conversions though :P Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/160026-sternguard-squad-and-captain/#findComment-1885827 Share on other sites
