Hi... and thanks.

Hey guys this is my first post on B&C. I picked up my first army units in December and I have played 5 games now with my DH army. I have enough models for a 3k point game but the largest I have played is 1500. A few thoughts from a brand new member of the Ordos Inquisition.

1. The community on this board is fantastic for DH. When I was formulating strategy and buying models I used this forum as a resource and it helped a lot. So thanks to everyone here who helped me figure out what to buy, what strats are strong and what will get me killed.

2. DH armies are expensive. This whole "no box sets, and all metal figures" thing really sucks. I am nearing 2k dollars down the tubes now since I started playing and my bank account isn't happy with that. I could have put together 2 armies of any other team for this...

3. DH are not a good army for a starting player for two reasons... its a very tough army to use well. And second, its a really hard army to paint. Granted not everything is tough but my GKT squad took me forever to paint and was very hard.

But I don't think I would do it different if i went back and started over. I am a fluff monkey and long before I even had thoughts of playing the game I was reading 40k novels. I have read about 45 of them now and I gotta say the Grey Knights books and Eisenhorn/Ravenor series really sold me on Inquisition. I considered Witch Hunters but Nuns with Guns really aren't my style.

My tutor for this is a Tau player and thats been really rough. FW with Devilfish backed by broadsides and crisis suits are a massive pain to deal with. I suffer over 50% army casualties before I even get a chance to really engage him. Railguns give me nightmares now. However I am having a blast. 2 Items might make you guys smile.

On my third game against him I deepstruck a squad of PAGK with 2 incinerators behind his lines next to a squad of fire warriors and in assault range of his broadsides... the port went way wide and i ended up about 14 inches from either unit. Which of course was a death sentence. In the next turn the squad took missle pod hits, 24 shots of rapid fire from the FW squad 6 shots from a pathfinder squad, a second round of missles, and 14 shots from some kroot. 1 guy survives this nightmare and nearly every unit he had on the board shot at them. I rolled my armor save 6 times in a row on the last guy standing. On his next turn he moves about 3 inches toward the Fire Warriors who moved up to him for rapid fire and kills half the squad with his incinerator. They failed their morale check and fled off the map, and my Calidus assassin ties up his broadsides, and the only unit I dont tie down or shoot up is the pathfinders who are about 8 inches away. On the next shooting phase the pathfinders fail to kill him again and he wipes their squad out with fiery death. 1 PAGK killed two squads of units by himself and got himself a name. How could I not name him after that, so every game now Brother Ezekius takes the field with his trusty death spewer.

On my last game I faced off against a Necron army in an annihilation game. (Needless to say I was terrified) but I took a well balanced army of storm troopers, transports, PAGK in reserve, GKT's in a LRC, and a dready with missiles and a las (I wanted to take my plasma cannon/ CCW dready but I knew the monolith was gonna take everything I had.) Well my opponent took the Nightbringer who quickly proved I was going to lose the game as he rolled non stop saves against everything I threw at him. So I made a desperation move and took in the LRC and assaulted him with my GKT led by Brother Captain Stern. Stern hit with 2 dice, wounded with 1 but I rerolled it and wow another six popped up, then he made 1 save and the 1 wound that went through got psychic checked. One dead Nightbringer later I was slicing through Necron Warriors like a hot knife through butter. I even risked moving inside the monoliths range (who i immobilized on turn one with my dready) to try and kill his units down to 25% (which I did) and I ended up winning the game thanks to Stern and his fantastic re-roll power.

Well thanks for listening to me rant, and I look forward to talking to you all in the future.

1. Agreed, they are great.

2. Agreed, the models cost a fortune, but they are some of the best models GW have made.

3. I started my DH by allying on to marines, and I'd played for a good few years before that, so I can't comment.

Anyway, welcome brother! Nice work on taking down the nightbringer like that, bet the look on the cron players face was priceless :tu: And good luck to Brother Ezekius, may his holy incinerator purge the xenos filth for many a year more.

Velkommen Comrade!

Remember that nilla gk are worth their weight in gold against the tau.

I really noticed that, forcing all the Tau to slog through my 3+ armor saves really took it out of them. And they still had 2 full squads of stormtroops with plasma weapons to deal with as i captured the objectives. He has a hard time deciding to try and knock out my knights or chew up the troops, its sad when your army is so elite your cannon fodder are the best troops the IG can field.

It'd be even more fun allying select units from the Witch Hunters, and watching other armies try to figure out how to deal with all the mayhem.

"So you've got Grey Knights, Sisters, Storm Troopers, Priests, Inquisitors, Assassins, Arco-flagellants, Seraphim, Orbital strikes, Inducted Guard Platoons, Sentinels, Rough Riders, Leman Russ.. is there anything you CAN'T do?!?"

"Field Grey Knights and Space Marines at the same time."

"I hate you..."

It's fun! ;)

Wow that is funny, i had considered in a 2000 point game to take ally gaurd but i had not thought of getting sisters as well... If you came up with a plausible list of troops to take using the combination of all three teams i might be tempted to do this. Course keeping track of all the individual rules would be crazy, and who to take as an hq... Only an inquisitor lord would make sense for a list this crazy.

I'm one of those guys who wont do it on the battlefield if it doesn't fit the fluff. My tau buddy is always calling me a madman for some of the tactical moves i make not cause they're smart but cause they're fluffy. He does some silly things as well though, he takes an ethereal every game even when he knows im taking a vindicare or a calidus assassin.

Of course I've come to realize that Calidus assassins are amazing against a tau player because they can tie down a broadside team... makes me smile just to think about tying up 3 twin linked rail guns with a unit who can cut them down in quick order. I don't even use the side rule that lets me move a unit so not to give away that I'm using the assassin.

Thats also why I dont take pure GK. From a fluff standpoint it does not make a ton of sense unless you're fighting a pure demon army. The =I= isn't going to send a force of pure Grey Knights to take on an enemy strike team, they aren't made for that. The GK are the precision cutting tool not a general purpose hammer. At least fluff wise they are. If they =I= knows there are enemy tanks and what have you they are bringing stormtroopers and perhaps even inducted guard with tanks.

GK are the big reason I took this team but I can't bring myself to field a pure GK list, just doesn't feel right. If I play a chaos player or a pure demon player though I'll be very, very tempted.

Doing it in under 2000 points would be the hard part.. having it in your collection to bust out for Apocalypse games.. that's easy :P

My own personal fluff, for an army theoretically under the command of my Ordo Hereticus Inquisitor Lady (Lord) is that she's observing a Cadian Regiment as part of the Cadian Internal Guard for signs of corruption or foul play.. the regiment has a history of a greater than normal instance of going up against Chaos and Witches, so she's "assisting" the regiment on the behalf of Cadian High Command. She has a Land Raider and some IST's, I then take a squad of Sisters and Seraphim, sometimes Retributors, a unit of Grey Knight Terminators as an elites choice, some Death Cult Assassins, sometimes I'll sub those out for a Vindicare, or not take the Termies, etc. I regularly induct a platoon of guardsmen from the Cadian 84th to assist her if the need requires it, as well as Sentinels, my Rough Riders (though now I'm waiting on the rumored plastic Cadian Roughriders to make the neat conversion of more lizard riding/dewback style Rough Riders with some mounts I gnabbed off EBay to be unique), and eventually I might add a Leman Russ.

She regularly ends up in the same warzone as the regiment she is "observing" in her own role as a Thorian Inquisitor, as well as a proficient psyker and Witch Hunter. Having the resources of the Guard nearby help in terms of martialling troops, as well as being able to call on the Grey Knights and Adepta Sororitas if they are available.

The best part of this... is people can legitimately ask me "What army do you play?" "Witch Hunters." then I totally get the drop on them in terms of fielding this weird conglomeration of stuff that they didn't plan for. They hear Witch Hunters and think Sisters of Battle.. then they see my army and have no idea what any of it is or what to do about it. It's a load of fun just getting to play with a little bit of whatever and have it all work fluffwise :)

Welcome to the fold!

Oddly enough, I found that Grey Knight were cheaper to get into than other armies. I'm building a 1500pt pure GK force at around $400 USD, which includes 3 Land Raiders, 3 PAGK squads, and Brother Captain. The low cost is due to the low model count, for the most part.

As to how they perform? I'm working on that. :D

Welcome to the 666th chapter of Astartes. You already know that Grey Knights are more than just marines in shiney armour. The models are some of the best in the range and it is a fun army to play, if sending a hail of storm bolter fire into the enemy before the perfectly timed assault is the thing for you. The fluff is brilliant too, who doesn't love the unsung heroes fighting the secret war against the Daemon?

I assume you've read the Water Warrior tactica pinned at the top of the forum?

Yeah I read way of the water warrior. My only issue is that I don't want to use pure GK. I don't think its very fluffy in most cases. With the GK spread all over the galaxy getting several squads together in one spot for anything is extremely uncommon. But I keep my force adaptable and reactive to my opponent which lends itself nicely to a team that offers good, inexpensive cannon fodder and expensive adaptable shock troops. Of course then there are super expensive but amazingly effective GKT. Necrons don't get back up after you wipe their squad in one turn from swipes of Nemesis force weapons.

As to Jeffersonians cheap comment... going pure GK is cheap... I never even thought about it, I didn't go that route and its been a nightmare of cash spending what with all the rhino's and chimera transports, the assassins and inquisitor and retinue. Then all the stormtroopers were crazy expensive. But I love all the versatility. Oh and i spent a bit extra on some FW doors and I got the FW dreadnoughts too.

Welcome noble brother to the ranks of the greatest Ordos in the Imperium!

It was funny reading your story of how you started, it is almost the exact same story I have of getting into GK/=][=. My Brother in Law is a long time player and was after me for years to get into it. Finally in the fall of 2006 I took the plunge. I skimmed every codex and looked at all the 40K models before I even started. The staff at my local GW were probably wondering if I was ever going to buy anything. I finally bought the DH/WH codex and read them both several times before I actually started buying models.

2 things convinced me that the Ordos Malleus and Hereticus were the way to go:

  1. The sheer beauty and ornate gothicness of the entire Ordo Malleus / Hereticus line. Nothing in the game compares to it, GKTs are still my favorites.
  2. Fluff. We are the last bastion of defence for the entire imperium against any and all enemies. We are outnumbered and outgunned, it is our faith and our faith alone that grants us victory against insurmountable odds.

Then as I started buying, painting and playing, I had the same realizations you did: "Wow, sure does take a long time to paint all the details on Grey Knight Terminators." "Gee, getting into CC with that dread sure didn't go the way I thought it would." "You have how many models at 1500 points?" Fill in the blanks :) I didn't make it any easier on myself because from the start, I started doing customizations: FW, parts from other lines; at the time you could order any part from any model straight from GW - I probably spent as much on bits for customizations as I spent on actual models.

But what can I say, the unbelievable models, the killer fluff, the painting and playing challenges...after 2 years I am still learning and I wouldn't trade this army for the world.
