While crushing traitor marines (or attempting to as it turned out!) in a annihilation game at the weekend, I experienced the worst set of armour saves I have ever managed for my beleagued wolf guard. Loath though I am to bring up shameful defeats of our beloved wolves, it got me thinking... What are the worse sets of armour saves and runic charm re-rolls you've ever managed ?

 

I never leave home without a few runic charms on my WG in TDA and am (clutches something wooden) generally quite lucky with dice rolls.

 

My situation was taking 6 hits from what was left of some chaos raptors on my unit of wolfguard in TDA with runic charms (and some Storm Shields, though they weren't relevant here) and losing 3 Wolf Guard. Can you imagine the combination of rolls necessary to do that? While my opponent rolled 5s and 6s I think I rolled something like 7 1s from 11 Dice. Hmmph. Can anyone beat that?

 

For the record, I eventually lost the combat and the game by being wiped out to a man with this combat being critical... my first serious loss in this edition of 40k. Many tankards were raised for lost brothers after that fight I assure you!

Not with my SW. But i had have two such disasters in the past, one with my GK and one with my Salamanders.

 

GK vs. SoB: Grand Master and Terminator retinue deepstriked in in range of an IST squad and a SoB squad. I shot at the Sisters. The IST shot first with rapidfire and hit 12 times, wounded 9 times and i missed all armour saves. 500 points killed by a squad that cost a fifth off mine.

 

Sallies vs. Orks: one of my Tac Squads had been outgunned by the greenskins. From 18 shots he hit 15 times and wounded me 13 times. Believe it or not i missed 11 armour save. A whole squad eradicated in a single salvo.

I think I've already told this story on the board, so if you've heard it before please bear with me. About 12-15 years ago, playing second edition against my brother who was an outstanding eldar player at the time. I had Njal Stormcaller as one of my special characters. The mission was "Witch Hunt" and he managed to score 5 shots on Njal (4 wounds at the time) I had to roll 5 basic saves at 3+, needing to make two to keep Njal alive and win a resounding victory as I had already killed his farseer. I rolled all five dice at once and they all came up 1's.

 

 

My brother yelled "Yahtzee!" and laughed his fool head off. He still brings up that battle to this day.

Wolf Lord slaughtered IG command squad in CC and was left out in the open. 1 Conscript with lasgun had LOS to him. WL has Terminator Armor and Runic Charm and 1W left, to set the scene a bit better.

 

Conscript goes zaap! at long range, getting a 5 to hit! Then he gets a zogging 6 to Wound! I laugh and roll my Sv. 1! "Reroll from the RC" says I. Roll another dice and gets another 1! My Lord just bit it from a Conscript going zaap! from 24" away! Needless to say, the Dice Gods had left me, so I conceded defeat and tried another game.

I havent had a Wolf Gaurd squad wipe out like that.... yet. *knocks on wood*. Its always possible, and I know itll hit me sometime, but in the mean time Ill enjoy soaking up 4000pts of shooting with a 400pt squad*.

 

*True story, 2k of Tau+2k of Dark Eldar took an entire shooting phase + 3x10 witches+ Archon+ 9xIncubi in CC. They were eventually finished off by the Dark Eldar Incubi who did two more wounds than I could save. Without stormshields.

Well, I once lost an entire WGTDA squad + Lord to as salvo of Burst Cannon fire - that was before I used Runic Charms.

 

Since then, worst was another WGTDA squad to a Baneblade Cannon Round. Though they did knock a couple of SP's off it, in all fairness.

 

On another occassion they waded through 50+ Guardsmen and only the Lord was left on 1 Wound.

A wolf lord and 5 WGs in TDA. Against 4 guardsmen with their little flashlights. Both units were the only survivors on the respective sides after a long drawn out game so i was rather confident in my sucess. So I am about 4 inches away and i only need to manage to roll for 4" with 2 dice (1 for the movement, than one for the assault move). so you guessed, I got snakeyes. woops. than he gets to shoot at me but im laughing cause to kill me there would have to be some crazy rolling. So he shoots, getting 8 S3 shots. they all hit, a feat in itself, seeing as they have BS 3. now, wounding on 5+, he get 7 6s and 1 5. Time to roll for saves. Rolling at 2+, i roll 8 straight 1s. well guess what, they all had runic charms, so no big deal right? guess again, i re-roll and get the exact same results! Wanna know the odds on that whole thing? lets see, how about 1 in 256 just for them to all HIT! In total the odds of that scenario happening were 1 in 4.73838134*10^18. THAT IS REDICULOUS! i never cease to be reminded of that game by my IG freind, so i just have to keep beating him to keep it out of my mind

This one game against Dark Eldar is so bad that I have relegated a certain part of my mind to avoiding remembering it LOL

 

There is this one item whose name escapes me that allows the Dark Eldar Lord to get a 2+ invulnerable save until the lord fails one... well, in theory this could go on forever but I never thought it would... in this one game I'm playing a shooty SW list and I manage to wipe out the lord's retinue first or second turn... and then the single lord goes on to destroy my whole army... my friend was counting (and laughing) at the number of 2+ invulnerables he was making and it was somewhere in the neighborhood of 36 made invulnerable saves... I was shooting this lord with krak missiles, lascannons, heavy bolters, bolters, EVERYTHING and the lord would take the 2+ save and make all of them... I got totally wiped as it went from one side of my force to the other, rolling 75%+ hit/wound/kill in close combat... at the end we were both laughing, me at the ridiculous defeat, and my opponent at how much he promised to use that item every time... it was horrible
