Prodigy
My gaming group plays with insteant death only possible from special powers (force weapons, khan/sicarious's swords) when in close combat, yet I was recently told that double strength of a model's toughness causes instant death in close combat as well as in shooting. I do not beleive this to be correct, since A: the instant death rule is explained and mentioned in the shooting phase chapter of the rulebook and the only example given is a space marine captain(T4) being hit my a krak missile (S8) for instant death. Instant Death isn't mentioned even once in the close combat section of the rulebook. My group has decided to go with not including it (again, unless inflicted by a force weapon or other special weapon) but I do occasionally play with people outside my group. I'm hoping somebody can clear this up for me. Thanks in advance Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/160467-instant-death/ Share on other sites
Captain Malachi
Instant death is most definately in effect in CC, there's absolutely no reason why it wouldn't be. If an attacks strength is double the toughness of the target then the other guy gets instant deathed, I see no reason this wouldn't apply in close combat. nighthawks
yes - as Cpt. M said. reread the rule on page 26 (yes, in the shooting section) and note that the text says "...an unsaved wound from an attack..." and does not specify shooting only. there are a lot of rules that are presented as they become relevant and apply to sections other than the one they are printed in. this is one. difficult terrain is another, and there are more examples if you look for them. hope this helps. Prodigy
it was definitely only shooting in 4th edition (the rule said shooting attack, iirc) so that's why we started with it working that way. Captain Malachi
No, I'm pretty sure it was the same in 4th. Haven't got my 4th ed rulebook on me to check, but we always played it like that. Bran Scalphunter
Instant Death has been both shooting and melee/ what ever other types be there attacks as far back to 3rd Edition. I know this because it gave two examples- a Space Marine Captain eating krak missile, and then a Ork Nobz mob taking lotsa shots. WarpSpawn
Although the Instant Death rules reside within the shooting section of each book, both 4th and 5th have similar wording. 4th says "If a creature is wounded by something which has a strength value of double their toughness" and 5th says "If a model suffers an unsaved wound from an attack that has a Strength value of double its Toughness value". Neither specifies what this attack has to come from, so it is just a mistaken assumption on your (the OP's) part that this limitation might exist.
