Army Pics

number6

Recommended Posts

Over the years I've been here, many have asked to see my army. Most recently in my tournament report. As I noted there, I've been reluctant to post pics because, well, I'm about average at best and also put no effort into the bases.

Nevertheless, just so you know why the army was only rated 12/20 for appearance at that tourney, here are samples. Don't worry about being critical, I'm well aware of my artistic limitations. B) That said, don't expect me to go back and redo anything, no matter how well-founded the advice. DH was my first foray into miniatures painting (and gaming), and I learned a lot. I'm taking that experience and spending more time and effort with my in-progress Tau army than I spent on the my DH.

Apologies in advance for the picture quality. I don't have access to very good lighting. Good enough to paint by, lousy to shoot pics with. :P

Here are my GK Heroes

That's:

2 Land Raiders

3 Dreadnoughts

35 PAGKs (includes 4 Justicars, 2x incinerator, 2x psycannon)

2 GK Heroes (1x psycannon, 1x stormbolter)

5 GKTs (1x psycannon, 3x stormbolter, 1x TH/SS)

Inquisitor w/psycannon

Plasma Cannon Servitor

2x Heavy Bolter Servitor

2 Sages

Mystic

Vindicare Assassin

Eversor Assassin

Callidus Assassin

3 DCAs

Canoness (inferno pistol, eviscerator)

13 Seraphim (includes 2 VSS, 1 w/BP & eviscerator and 1 w/brazier & eviscerator; 2x inferno pistols; 2x flamers)

Unpainted, I have:

Land Raider Crusader

Land Raider Terminus

Culexus Assassin

3 DCAs

3 Acolytes w/bolt pistols

Mystic

3 PAGKs

And an unknown number of PAGKs (at least 8) partially built/primed that I obtained in a trade a year ago.

I'm not sure when I'll get around to painting these models. So far, they've never been required except for the occasional game of Apocalypse, so the motivation isn't very strong at the moment. I have my Tau and a couple of other hobby projects occupying my time right now.

My favourites are the assassins. They just look so dark and clean. If only my Grey knights saw such attention. Sadly I have only my Hero and retinue, that are almost complete. My Eldar and Dark Eldar have taken most of my painting time.

I like it.

A whole painted army, that's something to be proud of. Plus, you got to start somewhere right? I can say that my grey knights were the victims of my first paint jobs...hopefully there will be a day that I can muster the will to simple green them and apply what I know now. And washes!

I noticed that a couple of the bases had a bit of a steaky covering so tidying that up would help a lot since there's nothing wrong with the bases otherwise. Really though, that's not a bad job done - it may seem modest compared to some of the models we see on the BnC but most of us will never be that good.

Besides, anyone that puts the effort in to paint an army deserves kudos in my book codex. My eyesight is pretty poor so I'll never be a good painter but I always strive to put a painted army on the table.

very nice work! A bit of black lining and your army would really really pop - such strong metallics.. Looks good -

Thanks! But after looking at your own work, I know you're just being nice. ^_^

I pretty much painted the army following the steps outlined in the DH codex ... just couldn't get the same results. ;) I used watered down blue ink as a wash to darken the recesses for "pop". It doesn't show all that well in the pics, but looks "OK" in real life, especially on the GKTs.

And thus is why I doubled up on mine. Ran em through the wash twice just to make it noticeable.

I am being nice, but I respect that people are all different - You put in effort, and That is great - it doesnt mean that effort costs me more than it does you - I dont see it as relevant to the results as much as relevant to the method - and you have put a great deal into your work.. (your results are good too) there are alot of people who wish they had your army and painting standard..

I love how bright your models are and the metallics.. I struggle to get mine as bright - and it takes me some time -

I see it now, the problem with washes are that they tarnish the whole area, not just the recesses - can I suggest maybe that you score yourself a pot of babdad black, and a fine fine brush (GW ones are too thick) and just run it in the recesses? that way, you dont get various thickness lines, it runs INTO the recess and even if you go outside the desired area it will be less noticiable - and you keep your bright colours..

Is that the problem, my brushes are just too big? Admittedly, I never can keep the wash just in the recesses/edges right where I want them.

Ironically, I just bought a set of the GW washes a week ago to try out on another project....

Thanks for the tip! :wallbash:
